Email prank goes wrong!?

I like to go by the addage, 'Treat others how you want to be treated', in this situation.

Way too far. I mean, a jokes a joke, but indecent exposure to minors is serious business.

Not nice at all. Someone pulled that on me (notwithstanding that I'd have checked the header info on the email right off the bat), I'd be ready to punch them next time I saw them - and I'm not the physically violent type.

That is a very nasty thing to do to someone. If you ever try something like this again, make sure you choose something less criminal to insinuate.
He might have laughed it off if it had been about the mountain of parking tickets he's accumulated, or an extremely serious e-mail about crossing the road dangerously, but the subject was just not funny.

In this day and age, an accusation like that can destroy a career and family. He could be fired from his job and shunned by his co workers. Terrible judgement on your part.

Agreed. Your joke could have gone over well, but you blew it with the content. You chose poorly.

Just a teensie bit too far. Next time send him a message asking what time he wants his new piano delivered or something. It'll get him frazzled, not angry.

If I didn't know better, I'd say you made this thread purely so that we can pick out all the immature posters on this forum.

But you don't deserve that much credit.

Good idea, bad subject matter, hilariously bad execution.

I'm laughing here, but at you, not with you. Sorry. There are so many things you could have done a little differently. You could have just snuck in some jokes that made it obviously fake. You could have put in a description of the lewd behavior taht made the point clear. You could have not tried so hard to make it sound so serious. You could have picked a better subject matter, like the $3,264.86 in unpaid charges for pay per view movies at the hotel, inlcuding "Big, Busty, Beautiful IV: Extreme Surgeries", "Paradise Assland 12", "Pornstar Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Clit", and "Little Bo Peep and Her Sheep".

Anyway, you have little chance of redeeming yourself and will probably have to wait until this blows over. But what you should do is send another email to him apologizing, including a message to his manager and the person who went with him acknowledging that your act was in bad taste and lacked good judgement, and to the IT department apologizing for wasting their time. At least that way he'll know you understand the implications and are truly apologetic.

Screwing with someone's corporate email address is never funny. The IT email/internet nazis read everything, even if they dont, assume they do for safety's sake. I know people who have been fired for email crap. I wont even send out personal emails from my corporate address.

Mess with someone's gmail/yahoo/hotmail account if you want some chucks, thats fair game. Nobody will can your azz for stuff in gmail.

That's good, just horrible choice of joke...

I'm seriously wrangling with the morals of usuing ths tool to fight back against some people who have bullied and harrassed me for the last year. But I wouldn't be trying to be funny, I'de be trying to attack other peoples characters and blame them for things they didn't do, just like they did to me... I could call it Operation Chaos:D
Though I think I should just leave them alone, but it would feel good, lol.

Your prank could have been funny if it had been:
a. really over the top
b. not about pedophiles.
c. not on his professional email address.

In your case your uncle was totally right to be pissed off. Even the slightest hint that you are a pedophile can be enough to get you in serious trouble.

I totally agree. You MUST apologize, by email, to him, his colleague and his manager, saying that was all a joke gone wrong.

It's not so much that the prank itself is funny, its that its hilarious that it didn't occur to you that it just might be inappropriate.

Well, it's serving that purpose one way or another :mischief:

That is disgusting! :vomit:

Not enough people realise how easy it is to write custom email headers. I have had my personal reputation tarnished by . .. .. .. .. .. .. .. . written by asses like you.

For future reference, the prank email needs to start plausable but become increasingly abserd. Let 'em brick it, then realise someone is playing silly buggers.

Telling someone they are being investigated for kiddie fiddling is bad. Telling them their a/c is frozen while they are audited by the tax man wouldnt be funny, but if the mail went on to explain this was happening because of their attempt to set off the VAT of £974 worth of contraceptive devices against their dues (in the first quater of the financial year yada yada alone) could be. "HM Revenue and Customs specifically requires further information as to the nature of the contracting you undertake" and "a reciept and description of the £392 spend with the Pentonvill Rd Latex and Rubber Company* is required" or somesuch.

* Despite Pentonville Rd (aka Kings Cross) being the UK's most notorious area for street prostitution and street drug sales, this is a real company, selling inner bean bag's and custom foam cushions etc. On realising the name of the company for the cheque, I went to the cashpoint. There are some things that just have no place on your bank statement.

I think it's sort of funny, especially with the
http://www.sharpmail.co.uk - Send 'fake' email for free! Send 'fake'
part.

I don't think you need the little disclaimer at the end. For me, this screamed FAKE:

Denver Police Department in regards to you conduct on the 27th
of April 2008.

Your prank could have been funny if it had been:
a. really over the top
b. not about pedophiles.
c. not on his professional email address.
Agree

Really agree
