Since his act of violence was clearly politically motivated, I'd say even 1st degree murder is letting him off light. I say bring some terrorism charges against this fool. Then he can serve his sentence in Gitmo getting "interrogated."

The Commonwealth of Virginia is leaving that to the feds, I'd guess. From their perspective just slapping on a murder charge that they can easily make stick and then letting the feds do their part is probably for the best.

Yeah. Portraying yourself as the lone voice of reason in a mad world that cannot be fixed is a great way to say "I'm very smart" while refusing any responsibility.

I thought virtue signaling was designed to show your virtue to fellow members of the group, lone voices dont have any company... Reminds me of Jesus' condemnation of public prayer, they seek not god or enlightenment, instead they show others their virtue with public displays of piety.

So, we have a guy who is certainly indigent enough to have an appointed lawyer, but can afford an apartment and a murder weapon and the gas to drive it across several states to a white supremacist rally. Only a couple years ago his high school teachers knew he was a nazi sympathizer and white supremacist because he has never tried to hide it.

And his mother says, with a chuckle, "well, I stayed out of his politics."

It's time to STOP staying out of these trolls politics. The little band of white supremacists that we are saddled with get challenged HERE. But they are someone's brothers, someone's kids, someone's co-workers. They go to someone's stores, they attend someone's church, they are someone's neighbors. They cower over their keyboards where the only challenges they face are people who will risk a ban for calling them the trolls they are. Then when they feel bold they gather in their numbers with their shields and their clubs and their torches...and they kill some innocent and go home to cheer for their new martyr.

They need to be told by WHITE faces that they are repugnant, that they do NOT represent some imaginary 'us,' that their methods are not going to be tolerated. We need people to confront them BEFORE they kill, not get their fifteen seconds of fame by saying "Oh, yeah, I always new that guy was a white supremacist. Ticking time bomb. No surprise he finally killed somebody." The conspiracy of silence among whites, while not the same kind of repugnant as the open white supremacists, is just as responsible for the outcomes.

Yeah, no disagreements here. One surefire way to get me to hate a particular cause is for that cause to become a disruption to public order. These white supremacists used to just mostly be a bunch of shouty lunatics, but never really became a serious problem. Now they are a serious problem. I say the government start putting some of those Bush-era anti-terrorism laws to good use to start dismantling these groups.

In black churches all across America there IS a demand for restraint being expressed.

Hehe, conspiracy of silence? I just saw the king of the alt-right on TV condemning the murderer and the racists. As for me, I started a thread a while back condemning ~2 centuries of evil perpetrated against black people by the Democrats and got a bunch of insults from people trying to defend evil...or ignoring it. I found your demand white people speak up as if there was an abundance of white people who'd like their foot on the pedal inconsistent with the argument Muslims shouldn't need to speak out against the thug(ee)s. You hold both positions, correct?

I'm way more fine with that than with the counterproductive "counter-demonstrating".
You know, half those people probably wouldn't know pluralism if it hit them with a stick; and the chant is kinda dumb.
But, well... it's not necessarily the way it should go but in certain circumstances (that are arguably met) it's a relatively acceptable it can go.

They could have lended a somewhat more festive serenity to the moment by employing a chant paraphrasing the 14th ammendment (or the 9th if they wanted to particularly endear themselves to me)...
... but hey, i'll take it.

Can an American please explain to me how one can just up and be a paralegal based on a high school diploma and being a nice person or something but people need a license for virtually everything else including being a hairdresser?
Like, to me in my ocean-distance cultural ignorance that seems rather backwards...
