Fox09 - This Means War!

Ok, played my set. Not much to report.

First the joke:

Spoiler :

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel plans. So, the husband left Minneapolis and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My loving wife

Subject: I’ve arrived
Date: April 6, 2006

I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you’re allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then. Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

P.S. sure is freaking hot down here!

Now the set. I cancel the worker's orders with hope that the tree will eventually grow back.

Turn 186 - CS is in, I do a 2 turn revolt into bureaucracy + caste system. I set research to AH. I also settle the GE.

Turn 189 - AH is in. I start pasturing the sheep.

Turn 193 - IW is in. We have iron just outside of the BFC. A merchant is born, who is immediately settled.

Turn 197 - Globe is complete. The sheep is also finished pasturing. I start building the NE but will change it as soon as compass is finished.

Turn 199 - Compass is in. I change production to a harbor (3 turns). I have tentatively set research to machinery --> optics so that we can figure out who's out there.

I didn't see any wonders being built during my set - 1 GP was born abroad. No new religions founded either. I think our wonder denial is working.

Now that we have caste, we can force more scientists. After the harbor, we can try to force a GS with our next GP before we complete the NE.

OK a joke, actually my 4 year old daughter's favourite

Spoiler :
Q: Why did the lobster blush?

A: Because the sea weed.

Well research is set on Machinery, I think maybe we should change to Philosophy to get a religion so we can go Organised Religion but will leave that for next discussion.

Harbour comes in and gives us 3 much needed health.

National Epic comes in as well. Not much we can build actually. Do we want to start building axes that we can upgrade later? Again, point for discussion. We can't build research yet as we don't have Alphabet. Can't remember whether we want Moai Statues, so Chicken Snitzel it is.

Great event.

Luckily happens same turn as iron hooked up, so worker scoots over to get quarry back up.

Who said we were without an Academy?

I stop here so we can discuss next research goal.

Optics (caravel), Paper (Education), Calendar (spices), Music (free GA), Philosophy (religion) and Alphabet (build research) all seem worthwhile goals. I think Philosophy followed by Monotheism for Organised Religion then Optics.

I would say Calendar first (spice add +1 health with granary, I think), then Paper and Education next, since University will hasten the research of the rest (but may lose Confusion though).

We should really be building wonders instead of building research, so alpha probably is not important at all.

lurker's comment

If you don't found a religion, you're not getting one. So delaying Philo could really hurt. Also Philo is on the path to Liberalism. Of course there is always Devine Right, it is dead end tech though. And you guys could always skip religion all together... religion doesn't seem to be nearly as important in this variant.

Spice gives :health: with grocer. Besides that I agree with all

We don't really need religion in this game.... Dilpo is inexistent and :) will not be a problem with the Globe on. The only good that religion can bring us is slots for priests.....

Of course that Philo unlocks the A. Wat as well, a wonderful wonder to have.....

I got it. Normally in a OCC game, I beeline for education. Since we have invested turns into Machinery and Compass, then it makes sense to get Optics first.

religion would allow us theocracy, which may be helpful for the initial stages of war. However, it'll become useless as the game goes on so we can definitely skip all of the religion techs in this game too.

I would skip the spices and go straight towards education. The faster we can get Oxford up, the better. Spices will only give us 1 extra health at the moment (we won't get grocers for a while I imagine). 1 health won't speed up growth that much more but Oxford will speed up research a lot.

However, has the Mausoleum been built yet? If not, then we should do calendar and try that. That wonder can be a pain if the AI builds it...

Preturn...Research set to Optics

Turn 212...Grow to size 13 and i hire 2 more scientist
215...Optics--->Paper
216...Scientist born
Civ4ScreenShotF2.jpg

He will bulb Alpabet. I can waste 4 turns researching Alphabet, then bulb Philosophy or research Philosophy and save the scientist for Education. I choose the latter. I put some scientist back in the fields and switch research to Philosophy.

Turn 220...Chicken Pizza comes in...time for caravels. I make 4 in a row and 1 explorer in case we find a hut and can pop Astronomy....its a dream of mine. Ive only done it once my whole civ career. We get a fire at the forge.

Civ4ScreenShotF1.jpg

223...We founded Philosophy.
225...Caravels meet Suryauarman, Genghis, and Jao. 1 of the caravels takes the Taoist missionary we got from Philo and drops him off at that western Island to serve as a sentry.

228...Paper is in, Education is selected. We pop a Great Merchant who I send out on a trade mission....or did I settle him?...lol
The Great Scientist is left for the next person. He will get us over half of Education and thats my vote. We need Oxford as quick as possible. We dont have Alphabet, so that should be our next path so we can see where we stand on techs. I stopped here, but instead of pressing ESC to save, I pressed enter......so the save for the next person has no units moved. Shot of our city.

Civ4ScreenShotF5.jpg

Globe view...Jao is further east of Genghis
Civ4ScreenShotF7.jpg

And this little jewel. This is prolly our first target...Great Lighthouse.

The save

And the joke
Why dont dinosaurs talk?
Cuz their dead you idiot.

Good...we have a nearby good target. Now we have to get astro and chem to put up a naval stack to wipe out AI cities one by one . Clearly the tech path should be Edu -> Lib ( Astro ) -> Engineering -> Chem. If possible put Natio and Taj next....

I still think merging the GS would be better long term but Education isn't the worst bulb in the world.

In my OCC games, I do try to have a scientist saved just for education. Those turns saved are actually magnified by more turns saved from getting Oxford earlier.

I also agree that Pacifism will be fantastic right now since we dont have an army.

You save only 4 turns. Nothing more. Without the bulb, you will still have Oxford, just 4 turns later. So the question is whether bulbing Education and lose all the beakers from a settled scientist until the next scientist pop is worth it. IMHO, no. I never bulb unless it is critical to get it earlier timing wise: like founding a religion, going for tech trade, racing to a world wonder or racing to for some freebie tech (Liberalism, Economics, Physics, etc). None of the above seems to apply to Education (the Lib race maybe)... but, as I say, its MHO. There maybe something I was ignorant of.

Got it. So everyone agree on a revolt to Pacifism?

You lose those beakers for the rest of the game (with representation and multipliers, a settled scientist can be a big boost).

Yes to Pacifism until we boost our army.

Spoiler scientist joke :
During the initial space flights, NASA discovered that normal pens didn’t work under zero gravity conditions. To beat the problem, NASA spent 6 years and $2 million in designing a pen for use in space. The pen would work under zero gravity conditions due to the pressurized ink inside, it would work under sub zero conditions, underwater, on glass and virtually any surface known to man. The Russians used a pencil.

Scientists is merged ...

fox09-AD0835-scientists.jpg

Hmm ... what is the worker doing at the other end when there is pigs around that needed some doing?

Two turns of revolt, we actually would get the GP 1 turn faster :D But taht also means Education is 2 turns later ... :(

fox09-AD0850-revolt.jpg

And we have our first battle:

fox09-AD860-first-battle.jpg

"Relay a message to the admiral: We have engaged the Borg."

And we proved the world is round:

fox09-AD0930-round.jpg

fox09-AD0950-globe.jpg

fox09-AD0950-globe2.jpg

And of-course there are contacts being made:

fox09-AD0880-boudica.jpg

fox09-AD0940-pericles.jpg

Ending my turnset with another GS merge:

fox09-AD0940-scientist.jpg

I am building the UnivOfSankore, but I suggest we start University and Oxford as soon as can.

Education is 4 turns away.

Who is our first target and when are we going to take astronomy? We will have to do a lot of razing this game so I'd like to hold off till cannons/rifles, hopefully still against longbows. As for target, I think Pacal (being financial) is the greatest tech threat.

It's a good thing we got that circuumnavigation bonus - that'll make our war efforts easier. Meanwhile I'll try to get as much map info as possible. Our Caravels rule the seas anyway as no AI has got past Triremes/Galleys yet. Speaking of Triremes, we get an event:

25853702zc7.jpg

Was one of the shortest ones ever because 2 turns later...

46538794ty4.jpg

After Education came in I started the University immediately and put research into Alphabet (2 turns). We have to see where the AIs are if we want to decide on the Lib freebie tech. After Alphabet comes in we see this:

62854561dh2.jpg

Boy, are those guys backwards. The reason is simple: Nobody has Alphabet yet, and therefore no trades ! Our Lib race can hardly be called one as the AI is behind 2 or 3 techs still.

62854561dh2.jpg

We get a GE. I settle him as there is no wonder of immediate worth out there.

18556651xe7.jpg

We found Hammurabi and declared. Here is one of his cities, home of the Shewdagon Paya.

32954934fw5.jpg

On my explorations I found a bigger island inhabited by barbs, and so I dropped our Explorer. Sure enough, he found a hut...

32680499se1.jpg

No tech though, only 40 gold.

I researched Lib unto 1 turn left and then changed to Gunpowder. The Taj is in no danger as the AI is miles away from Nationalism. Gunpowder opens up the Chemistry => SciMeth route, if we want to use the Lib tech for a tech on that route.

21236017ne4.jpg

We get another GS. Settled again.

26650597rx2.jpg

Here is the tech situation at the end of my 20:

48348042wd7.jpg

Still no Alphabet for the AI  . We may get something really good out of the Liberalism free tech here. Gunpowder comes in 3, Oxford finishes next turn. Then there are 5 turns left on the UoS, a sure bet given that only Joao and Boudica have Paper yet.
