Many red or red-ish countries seem to be former British colonies. It's not a perfect fit (south Africa being blue for example) but the correlation is still good

yes, some countries preferred to deviate over time from the motherland.

Got the idea from Central and South America. It is all blue as Spain/Portugal excepting Bolivia, Mexico Cuba and Venezuela.

Dont know how to carry on from there, though.
