Is this based on "hard" statistics or on one of those more subjective indices?

What exactly do you mean?
There are a few things about this that kind of complicates things, but it's nothing like say HDI but rather something much more tangible like GDP
Cost of basic necessities compared to some index
no

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out hints that don't just give it away entierly, but you're kind of sort of getting hotter with warpus' last guess

Is the shade of red in Europe based on the stat of individual states, or the EU as a whole?

Yeah, that was what I was asking.

I'm stumped. There seems to be some connection to how advanced economies are and there's also a degree of regional homogeneinity, but then you got anomalies like Colombia or Ghana. It can't be based on terribly obscure data because even Somalia and N.Korea got a shade. There isn't a whole lot of economic info about either.

Neither (might be a big hint here)

Certainly true, this map depicts probably one of the least obscure thing about economics there is

Ok, something not obscure wherein NK scores higher than SK and that Indonesia, Vietnam, Iran and Colombia have in common.

This thread seems fun.

The European states are apparently measured neither according to their national statistic nor to the EU statistic.

Something to do with capital cities, maybe?

How much money there is in circulation. Doesn't match the map I don't think but what the hell, let's throw that out there
No, but you're guesses are steadily getting better, warpus
It involves prices, right?
yes kinda

no

I guess I can clarify a bit: each country do sort of have this statistic on their own, but certain countries have the same (explicitly made so, not purely by coincidence), however, the EU collection of countries are not all the same

The map is skewed a bit since for examlpe Iran and Vietnam are rather extreme outliers, so it's hard to see the difference between for example USA and Canada

Financial worth or numerical value of biggest (or other) bank note?

Lohren, you should give more clues after a while, else the thread shall die once more
guesses now keep getting closer, so I don't think a hint is necessary

It's not your guess but it is about money and "financial worth"

Interest rates? I can't help but think Iran being white has something to do with usury being forbidden in Islam.
