Halloween cancelled? Why?

So a big deal is being made about Halloween being "saved" by the capture of the guy who allegedly shot up some cops in Pennsylvania. What is up with this? Why cancel trick or treating? Why cancel their big parade? The guy shoots cops, not kids, not parades.

Same thing happened in LA when Chris Dorner was popping cops. The authorities yammered constantly about the "danger to the community", but the only civilians who were harmed were people delivering newspapers who made the mistake of driving a blue truck. Chris Dorner owned a blue truck, and, y'know, cops gotta do what cops gotta do.

People need to get a grip. These guys hate cops. Lots of people do so it seems likely that this kind of thing will keep on happening. But they target cops and aren't just randomly shooting whoever they come across. If I was in Pennsylvania I would recommend any number of trick or treating costumes...just not cops...or blue truck driving newspaper carriers.

Because, unless those cops were complete and utter a******* or worthless pieces of human garbage, then they weren't just cops- they were also a part of the community. they likely had friends and neighbors. It would be callous to say they were "just cops" and move on. Doing so is like saying robin Williams was "just an actor".

I may not be onboard with the cops the majority of the time, but I believe this was the right action.

So I'm just going to assume you'd be cool with this guy babysitting your nephew, assuming the nephew wasn't a cop. I mean, clearly he's no danger, so what's the problem, right?

Not really... I mean if the cops found him there'd be at least a 50/50 chance of them shooting my nephew instead by "mistake".

If it was 'we are in mourning so this isn't appropriate' they could have said so and it would be totally understandable. That isn't what they were saying. The whole thing was put forth as a public safety issue. And the whole 'cancellation' business has now been rescinded since the suspect got caught, under the reasoning that 'public safety has been restored'.

@Bhsup...no way man. An alleged cop killer is a clear and present danger to everyone anywhere near him. Talk about giving the cops a green light for collateral damage! I'd keep my nephew well clear...of course my nephews are both in their forties so they don't need a lot of babysitting, but I get the drift.

Heh, okay I have to confess that you and NC went in a totally different direction with that than I saw coming!

Just a matter of perspective. In my town criminals usually shoot each other, so most people worry more about getting shot by cops. They shoot almost as many people in total as the criminals do, and they are a lot less discriminating about who they shoot.

And this is why i'm glad I live in Braintree. At least here the cop's worst crime is that they are bumbling, and possibly turning a blind eye to all the drug smuggling going on, or maybe that too falls under the category of inept.

A guy who randomly offs people clearly isnt quite right in the head. Just because he has a clear target at a given moment doesnt mean some unfortunate he deems a threat to getting caught wouldnt get offed.

Some kid might have policeman as his costume. Then what?

Except it isn't random, or anything even close to random. These guys had very specific grudges against a very specific group.

I think that 'Merica is right on this one. Think about this for a minute: if Christmas is around the corner and some criminals dress up as trees so as to do their criminal stuff (tree shields), then Christmas must be cancelled unless you want to invite copycats.
If a person's leg hurts, it must be amputated. This way it will never hurt again

Hmm, Chris Dorner shot folks who weren't cops too. I wouldn't trust the type to sufficiently discriminate their hate... not that shooting cops is justified of course.

(Not that leniency of cops shooting folks is justified either. sigh)

He had a general grudge against cops and a specific grudge against one cop. If you weren't a cop or relative of the one cop you weren't a target. At the end when he was stuck with the most recognizable face in southern California and down to stealing cars to try to get away he got stuck with some people who were obviously going to turn him in...and didn't kill them. In fact they were left bound loosely enough to make sure they could get free once he was away. He seems to have discriminated his hate pretty well.
