Jackson to produce Hobbit movies

Peter Jackson, Oscar-winning director of the Lord of the Rings movies, has signed a deal to produce two films based on JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit.

The filmmaker had been in dispute with New Line Cinema over income generated by the first film in the Rings trilogy.

"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us," said Jackson. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."

A director for the films - prequels to the Rings movies - has yet to be named.

The two Hobbit films will be filmed simultaneously, with their release planned for 2010 and 2011.

'New chapter'

Sir Ian McKellen has already expressed an interest in reprising his role as the wizard Gandalf.

In a statement, Jackson said the agreement enabled his Wingnut Films company to "begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line".

The three films in the Rings trilogy generated $3bn (£1.48bn) at the worldwide box office and won 17 Oscars.

New Line co-chairman Bob Shaye had previously said Jackson would never make The Hobbit "during my watch".

I am already waiting for this movie :goodjob:

Wont be as good as the original

What a flip-flopper

Why in the world would there be two movies? Oh, and I am curious which "version" of the riddles and story of how Bilbo got the ring he'll use. The original, or the one in later editions of the book.

Why two movies? And why is Jackson producing, but not directing them?

Ah well - good news in any case.

Too bad Jackson isn't directing... maybe he will, in the end?

I'm not sure of the need for TWO movies here... /shrug

Regardless, needs more Steve Guttenburg... AM I RITE VRCW?

I can see it now. Bilbo roller skating through Mirkwood singing "Macho, macho man, I've got to be a Macho Man!"

I'm always a little bit sad to see books I love made into movies, never seems the same afterwards.

no charging Rohirrim cavalry-of-doom? No ents-of-doom? No you-shall-not-pass-Balrog-of-doom?

I am going to watch it, no doubt, it might be extremely well done. But if LotR had only one thing going for it -and it had many imho- it was epic. "The Hobbit" just isn't that so it will be a let-down for many.

It will have Smaug though so... hmmm....

I wonder what kind of movie it will be.. after all, the Hobbit was written as a children's book, wasn't it? But if the film will be made in the same style as the LOTR movies, it will obviously be directed at an adult audience.. do we have a conflict here?

No, but it will have a great big ol Dragon-of-Doom that should be pretty darn cool.

The Battle of Five Armies is supposed to be pretty epic, at least on the scale as the Battle for Gondor.

Exactly.

Yeah I hope they grow it up.

I could see the Hobbit movies as to Lord of the Rings as the Ewok movies as to Star War.
