How to get a job (or not)

FYI I took the plunge and sent them an email.
Thanks, all.

*crosses fingers*
That is good news. You can only benefit from the effort; even if they turn you down. Let us know what happens.

Well (latest update of the Tak'slife reality show, they replied back that they wanted my CV so I sent it and they said they'd forward it to the ‘hiring manager’ and that's as far as I got.

That is excellent. You stayed out of the trash on the first pass. :)

Good luck. At least if they said they'd forward it, it is likely that the position has not been filled yet.

That's what I thought. Anyway, since they're writing from New Zealand which is at GMT+12 it was already Friday afternoon when it was Thursday night here so I shouldn't expect any further updates before Monday at least.

Just got a job at a restaurant. The manager approached ME while in line to get food (she'd remembered I'd applied in the past but at that time didn't have any recent food service experience) so I figured that was a good sign.

Not very glamorous work but I need the money rn.

What kind of restaurant? Is it one where you will enjoy the food?

I know that the practice of ghosting applicants has spread southwards to this continent, but I've never sought employment in the software industry before, so… what are the expectable deadlines for this kind of thing?

I really don't know. but It is not uncommon to wait a week or so. Since your application was passed on to the hiring manager who has to screen the applicants and go through the selection process, he could have a big pile of applicants. In addition, he could still be accepting applications and won't make decisions until he closes the process. I would give him/her three weeks from the HR email to you and then email that person and ask if he/she could check to see if a decision has been made and if you were still in the running. Let them know that you are still very interested and if they needed other information or references, you would be happy to supply them.

Oooh. I live in the vertiginous Argentina where I get flak for not using WhatsApp because it's ‘too slow’ so I'm used to a different time frame.

So a) I'd better discount another place I sent my CV to as a loss already and b) I'll let another fortnight pass until the three weeks have passed.
Back to the gaming and the novel-writing it is.

Thanks!

Takh, if you PM me your name/email address/experience (and a website, if you have one), I can start referring translation work to you. A network I'm a part of posts Spanish-English and English-Spanish translation work a couple times a month, usually, and every time I think to myself that it would be an opportunity for you but that I have no way of connecting you with those people.

…!

Thanks.

I'm getting hideous trouble connecting to CFC and CFC only (2 mins. loading time for one page) so I'll get back to you on that later/tomorrow.

Well, I just received a rejection message from the Path of Exile people. So that's that.

When I was jobhunting, I applied for a position in NYC with a local union there in early August. I did not hear back from them until mid-October.

I mentally write off jobs after going two weeks from not hearing from them. That seems to be the window for them to act. The larger the firms, the longer it can take so I do make some allowances for that. Teeny tiny firms can also take longer on occasion as the staff are pretty thinly spread in a bunch of different job functions but usually they are fast to move. Even still, two weeks give or take two more is generally the window to hear back in my experience.

I had one where I was told they were going to take a month to decide. It took almost a month but I got that one so I didn't mind the wait. But I did tell that if I got a decent offer elsewhere prior, I was going to take it.

In my field (science) you often have jobs online where application deadlines are 4 weeks+ away, sometimes 8+, and then the actual process of selecting candidates only begins at that point. So... 2 weeks is nothing for me ^^.
But the people deciding are not HR professionals in these cases, so that's also different.

Once got a rejection email after more than a year, but they admitted in it that they messed some things up .

Application systems in general are pretty crappy, especially all of the ones that make you upload a resume and then re-type the whole thing. The one consolation is that if you are saving all your job summaries and write-ups, it can go pretty fast. So instead of pounding the pavement and traveling everywhere to drop off resumes and losing days and days of time in the effort, you can crank out a bunch of applications in a few hours.

The best strategy though, is to make contact with/get to know a person in the department/company where you want to work and allow them to work on your behalf. Find a name and invite them to lunch. tell them youwant to find out more about their company, it is on your short list of places and you want to find out what it is like to work there. You can also ask them about other companies too.
