I'm going to Chavez-Land!

Of course you should go. Just like in most countries, in day to day life you'll probably never even run into the politics there, it's an imperfect democracy but it ain't freaking Burma or North Korea.

Really? Is that Venezuelan part originally Spanish, Amerindian, OR WHAT?

Spanish and French. My Venezuelan part is from Spain and my French part were rich people who owned plantations in Haiti who lost everything in that revolution thingy and had to escape haiti or else they would be jailed or killed. My Great Grandfather then migrated to Venezuela and met my spanish part of my family.

Man, and I thought you were a Pole of pure blood. How disappointing. :(

Well a little update, i've told my landlord that i'm leaving so... I'm officially going to Venezuela and i will be leaving at the end of June.

You're not going as one of those half-Euro, half-South American revolutionaries are you? :)

Don't advertise that you like guns or paintball!!!

Walk softly....and carry a big gun.

The city Merida, is a quiet for a big city, nothing happens around there.

Violence in Venezuela is fairly overated, it only happens in Caracas and Marcaibo and in the border towns with Colombia, the rest of Venezuela is fairly peaceful.

Well i've been to Venezuela many times before, and i can tell you from my experience that Venezuela is not any old 3rd world developing country, the rich, urban areas are the same as any old community in Europe or America, except you have some poor people living in horsehockey houses from here and there.
That makes Venezuela just another "old 3rd world developing country". Any country in South America has some rich urban areas that are just like what you have in Europe or the US. The extent of thos areas from country to country, from the richest Chile to the poorest Bolivia. But they all have it.

Venezuela as a whole has a murder rate comparable to war zones.

I want some input on my current situation.. let me explain to you a bit,

As some of you may know, i am half venezuelan, half of my family is from Venezuela, and a part of my family owns a Tourism thingy in Venezuela. Anyway, it makes big bucks (enough bucks to make 4 people travel around the world for 2 years, and they were originally planning on going for another 2 years) but my aunt and uncle are tired of working, and were offering my parents (who are in Canada, financially aren't doing the greatest, and tired of the cold) to work there. My mom and dad were delighted and as far as i know, are booking a 1 month vacation to Venezuela just to check it out to see if it will work. They also had the brilliant idea of bringing me along, even though i didn't want to. But they somehow dragged me into this, They are now talking about if everything goes well, how i'll stay with them in Venezuela. It's not like i don't want to go, i'd love to go, but it'd also love to stay. All i know is that i'm going to Venezuela for a month in March for sure, then i don't know...

Well i'm not sure about what's going to happen, but do you think i should go for it or stay home? I'm not completely sure if going to a country where i can sell a used car for more then a new car is the right choice... Not to mention Chavez and all...

Any question's, comments or suggestions?

Take malaria pills and learn the Venezuelan dialect of Spanish. Oh, and enjoy the beaches and beautiful women. And, of course, have fun and take lots of pictures!

Finally, don't believe the crap the media or talking heads spit out about Chavez and Co., he's not some monstrous dictator who's going to lock you up at the drop of a hat, he's just a leftist president of a country. Speech is free in Venezuela, and the rule of law exists.

Have a nice time! I don't really know anything about Venezuela, other than Chavez and oil and Simon Bolivar, so take lots of notes and pictures. And I didn't know you weren't just Polish! Interesting.

I consider most of Latin America as 2nd world, but w/e, all latin countries have problems with the barrios.

You'd be surprised at how low the murder rate is outside of the few main areas (Caracas, Maracaibo and a couple smaller poorer towns) for example, Merida the city i'm going to live in, Murder is barely a problem.

Be very careful at night, my friend...

I'm not leaving Merida other then for little tourism gimics, so i'm going to be safe, not to mention that my skin is fairly tanned, so i can pass for the average venezuelan. I'm more worried about my dad, who is white and is gonna look like a tourist.

I'm aware of the propaganda that the american media gives about Venezuela. I'd take Chavez as president over Bush any day imo. Chavez is actually helping the country big time, the only reason America is against Venezuela is because Chavez doesn't allow America to strip Venezuela of it's resources like they did in Congo, New Guinea Borneo.

Whut? Is that meant to read Congo, New Guinea and Borneo. In which case I call whut again?

Indeed. Latin America is no Africa, with a handful of exceptions like Haiti, Nicaragua and Guatemala. But we still have huge problems.

Again, that is the case in the rest of Latin America as well. Murder is very much an urban problem (with the exception of the modern Wild West that is the Amazon). But then again most people live in the big cities here, so most are affected by the violence.

It'll be interesting to have an independent opinion on Chávez-land. I've been there a couple of times, but people here will not take my word on stuff related to Chávez. So pay attention to what is happening, go to the markets, talk to the people, read the papers. And make sure to keep us posted.

Have a great trip.

I espiecially hate this, i still vividly remember school in Canada where they basically was like "Ok, so the developing world is Latin America, Africa and Asia, now let's see how they live their everday lives by watching this documantary about Kenya... *after the documantary* Now please fill out this worksheet. Question 1: By watching the documantary, what conclusion can you make about the living conditions in the developing world?"

It pissed me off, people in Latin America don't live in mud huts, do have access to fresh water, the average pay cheque for the day involves alooooot more then 1$ per day, and the health and education system is not that much worse then in America and Canada for gods sakes...

Almost like they are brainwashing kids in America so when America collapses and isn't so great, they'll stay in the country in rather then moving out to Venezuela or Panama because their education system taught them that it is developing and thus is horsehockey like Africa.

I mean what American companies have done/are doing to those countries, basically stripping off the countries resources like trees, minerals etc. all for their own profit of which doesn't land in the said country.

Chavez made it illegal for foreign company's to open stuff like mines and lumber production inside the countries, to prevent what has happened to those countries to happening to Venezuela.
