Italian court convicts 7

All over the world evil is moving. From deranged killers in movie theatres, to human traffickers, to gun running Federal agencies, to bunga bunga in high places. Speaking of Italy:

An Italian court convicted seven scientists and experts of manslaughter on Monday for failing to adequately warn citizens before an earthquake struck central Italy in 2009, killing more than 300 people.

The court in L'Aquila also sentenced the defendants to six years in prison. Each one is a member of the national Great Risks Commission.

Even here in the home of the church we see evil, in the form of the new high priests, scientists, in a deadly conspiracy against the public good. To those here who doubt the person and fact of Satan, I ask how else would one explain the unending barrage of misery and confusion pummeling humanity ceaselessly?

Trust no one. For you never know who might be...

Among those convicted were some of Italy's most prominent and internationally respected seismologists and geological experts, including Enzo Boschi, former head of the national Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

....in league with the Devil.

Prosecutors had sought conviction and four-year sentences during the non-jury trial, which was led by a judge.

"For you never know who might be in league with the Devil."

Hmmm.

Tell me, Mr Cooper, are you in league with the Devil?

There is no such thing as evil only lesser truth.

Sound like valid option to me...

So if scientists make an incorrect prediction, they're murderers? Sheesh. But that's alright with our resident Puritan.

No, wait. Doesn't Mr Cooper make predictions? Have some of them proved incorrect?

I think these guys failed to make a prediction actually. Obviously evil.

The defendants were accused in the indictment of giving `'inexact, incomplete and contradictory information"

How does this differ from your own case, Mr C? I seem to remember quite a lot of inexact, incomplete and contradictory information coming from your direction, as well.

But maybe my memory plays me tricks.

None die from my warnings. People died due the lack of theirs.

Not very convincing from someone who would probably rather execute all scientists in the first place.

Satanism and various forms of the occult are actually on the rise in Italy, so perhaps its understandable why some people perhaps superstitiously allocate blame for earthquakes on some satanic conspiracy.

But these scientists "failure to warn" hardly sounds diabolical, more like either negligence presuming there is actually some basis for the conviction, or scapegoating on the part of the Italian state to appease the publics need for due satisfaction (something not necessarily out of the way).

Ah yes, occultism. One of the few things more astoundingly bizarre and silly than traditional religion.

If you stopped think about the world in terms of good and evil, and started thinking about human interaction and what causes humans to commit crime and how this can be prevented then maybe you could add some ideas about posistive solutions to humanity's problems, rather than pointing the finger at a mythical scapegoat.

Let me understand this: Italy is in an area of the world that has been prone to earthquakes for many, many millennia. Unless the scientists said absolutely not one single syllable about it, this is ridiculous. It's like jailing the weatherman for not predicting a blizzard in winter in Central Alberta. We don't get as many as we used to and they're not as severe, but we still do get them.

And I'm curious: Where in Italy would people actually evacuate to in order to avoid earthquakes?

The intelligent discussion on this is in the Tavern and the farce is in the Chamber.

I wonder if the moderators would mind sorting them into the relevant forum, then...

This is astonishing. I thought that the non-jury trial was lead by a walrus.
