Is Britain about to leave the EU?

How low can these guys get?

Sir John Major already described the referendum campaign as a Blue-on-Blue fight. Elements on both sides are at fault, though as far as I know, no one on the Remain side has yet invoked Hitler or the Nazis multiple times.

That's probably because Hitler wanted England to become part of a German-dominated pan-European state. ;)

It was also seventy frigging years ago. Are we still so small-minded that our instant 'go-to' reference for nasty Europeans is Adolf Hitler?

Well, HM the Queen lived through it, so it's still within living memory.

The dear lady is ninety, after all, but that doesn't mean that British mentality should be frozen in aspic ever since 1945.

Well in essence that is what Conservative means but indeed. The lady I think is "staying out of this one" and wisely, monarchs ave lost their heads since the 17th century for less ;)

The more right wing are the real worry. The in and out campaign relies on common sense, and the more right wing have never been accused of having that. From UKIP to BNP to x.

"I think he's right about the coons, but then I am a bit mental"

lol

Well, we have not developed carbonite yet.

Well, we haven't found the Empress Teta system yet either.

To be fair he did leave a pretty impressive legacy that's going to be difficult to top in that department.

Absolutely, which is why (at the very best) comparing anything but the worst atrocities to the Nazis and/or Hitler is just going to sidetrack whatever point you're trying to make. Anything else and you just look nasty, racist or tragically small-minded.

Boris Johnson, anyone?

Erm... can't quite see how it could make you look racist. Racist against Austrians? I have no idea what you even mean there.

I suppose that if whatever concept that was getting compared to the Nazis was devised by a German/Austrian, then it might be racist, but otherwise I'm not sure what I was going for with that specific word-choice either, to be honest. Such a criticism would be hyperbolic, probably xenophobic and suggests that the speaker is probably stuck firmly in the past, but it's unlikely to be specifically racist, I agree.

Jo Cox MP critically injured amid shooting reports

An MP is in a critical condition after she was shot and stabbed during an attack in her constituency.

Eyewitnesses said Jo Cox, 41, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was left bleeding on the ground by her attacker. A man also suffered slight injuries.

A 52-year-old man was arrested near Market Street, Birstall, West Yorkshire Police said. The MP holds a weekly advice surgery nearby.

Ms Cox's assistant confirmed she had been attacked.

The MP was taken by ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary, where armed police are stationed outside.

[...]

"When I looked round there's a man stood there in his 50s with a white baseball cap on and a jacket with a gun, an old fashioned looking gun in his hand," he said.

"He shot this lady once and then he shot her again, he fell to the floor, leant over shot her once more in the face area.

"Somebody tried to grab him, wrestling with him and then he wielded a knife, like a hunting knife, just started lunging at her with a knife half a dozen times. People were screaming and running from the area".

It doesn't say in that article, but from NRK (also, see the link below) reports that the attacker shouted "Britain first!". Has the debate reached the level where political terrorism is necessary?

Aren't you guys on the islands starting to take this thing a bit too serious? :undecide:

Hm. Regardless of what people voting Remain or Leave are, i have to really really doubt that there are many among either side who would go on to shoot at others. And this person apparently shot a few times and then started stabbing? Wth? :crazyeye:

It is sad to turn this into a political issue, though, cause clearly this person was utter bs insane.

And if he was that patriotic, wouldn't he sort of more logically be shouting "England first" instead of "Britain first"? /holmes

I've only just heard about this stabbing myself, but quite why you'd stab a native (white) Briton and yell "Britain first!" as if that's at all meaningful, I have no idea.

(x-post, and yes) Anyway, it sounds very fishy imo. The guy moreover chose one of the apparently morst respected local mps, and a young good-looking woman too.

PM Camoron already tweeted (sic) to say how shocked he was. Story is obviously #1 at BBC and other sites there.

Don't know about this MP, yet the timing is awesome. Very sad for her, though. And sad that now this crime against her is presented as a political issue.

Well, just as in Florida, if the attacker chooses to make it seem political, regardless of whether it actually was or not, that's the nature of the beast unfortunately.
