Stop with all this bonI crap!

The amount of times I see people talking about tile boni or UA boni or what ever other boni you can think of is really starting to annoy the hell out of me.

I know it's petty and I don't normally get upset with things like this.

Spelling errors and grammar errors people make god knows I took 3 attempts to get a decent grade on my GCSE English, but when people spell it boni it is peoples deliberate attempt to try and spell something right and sound smart and its completely wrong. Seriously boni just sounds like a posh kid talking about his erection.

First time I ever heard it. But, I have one of the kids in the family over and he is watching a cartoon and I am doing miscellany and I kept hearing the word, "solid". Do me a solid. Lend me a solid. You owe me a solid. Etc.

I never even stopped to look at the screen but am guessing this is a new made up word in a vain attempt to teach the mass of fatherless youths something of responsibility.

So, exactly what are your criterions for deciding which foreign forms to accept ?

While it is true it comes from Latin not all English words that come from Latin follow that rule and since I'm referring to the English word and not the Latin one it comes from the technically correct plural is bonuses at least if you look at any standard English dictionary.
Just as the plural for anus is anuses not ani, virus is viruses not viri and campus is campuses not campi.

And no I wasn't really complaining about grammar as I know people make mistakes/typos/misconceptions/etc.

However this is more a silly rant over one word that people make the conscious choice to spell it boni.



If anyone can actually provide me a direct link to proof, I'll be more than happy to admit I'm wrong . Also yeah you're right I'll fix my It's.

I don't other than no dictionary I've seen list boni as an acceptable form. As I said earlier I'm no grammar expert I suck at English this is more a rant at just that one word.




Also if people haven't seen people spell it boni just search for boni on this forum, you will find lots of people using that form.

I would assume that he gets annoyed at it because it makes the person who used it seem like they are trying too hard to look intelligent. I will admit that if someone makes a determined effort to seem intelligent, it does get pretty annoying.

Sometimes the english pluralisation either does not exist, or is downright ugly. In the case of Bonuses i can live with that, but take the plural of Metropolis. In english - to my knowledge- there is no such thing, although the term is perfectly normal in plural in Greek. I use the word "Metropoleis" since it is a straight-forward anglification of the greek term.

Metropolitiai would work too, although it is a bit more particular. But imagine Metropolises, it sounds lame

Pet peeve warning.

There is no plural for virus in Latin, and if there were, it would be vira, not viri.
Viri is the plural of vir. Viri means men.
Never use viri when talking about virus, ever.
Though it does make for some interesting reading from time to time, when a paper about virus suddenly talks about men...

I find lawyers to be the most offensive with thus stuff: they usually have a pretty good familiarity with Latin, but not Greek , and the ones I know always try to be the smartest people in the room.

EDIT: I reject the convention on spelling out numbers less than ten (10?). It's outmoded and passé. Good writing will use numersls where numbers are discussed. An exception to this would be "the two of us went shopping". But when we talk about a top 10 list, numerals are required.

I've heard "boni" before (although seriously, I'm not sure), but surprisingly I've never heard "mali" before. Maybe because I so rarely hear "malus" to begin with.

Personally I'm a fan of octopi and cacti, but "boni" doesn't sound right. "Stimuli" and "nuclei" are a couple more good "-i" words. "foci" doesn't sound quite right even if mathematicians insist it's the correct plural of "focus", not "focuses". I'm on the fence about hippopotami. It's such a long word already, why not make the plural hippopotamuses?

That convention can get really annoying when you have to write a number such as negative two million, three hundred forty-six thousand, eight hundred fourteen and seven tenths. But for whole numbers less than ten, I think it depends on the formality and context. In the Tavern, Arabic or Roman numerals are probably OK. But even here, something like, "the 2 of us went shopping" or "the 3 of us had dinner" is 2 lazy and cell-phone-lingo-y.
