John McCain

RIP. It's too bad. Just the other day they said he had stopped treatment. But then this occurred fast. :(

Dying fast is a good thing for end-stage cancer. Hopefully the pain, seizures, etc. were well-controlled and he died as comfortably as possible. He seemed to enjoy most of his last few months visiting with family, friends and former colleagues, and that's pretty much all you can hope for.

I can't say I have an overall positive view of him. There were some unambiguously good things, like McCain-Feingold (until it was killed by the Roberts Court, that is), and his unexpected no vote which sank the attempted ACA repeal last year. There were some mixed things, like his fairly strong position on global warming pre-2008, until he was cowed into silence on the issue by his presidential run and a Tea Party challenge in 2010. But then there was all the cheerleading for war, and I just can't forgive that. His occasional departures from the GOP party line were well-publicized, but there were several other Republican senators more maverick than he was without getting the same publicity, and he tended to fall into line more rather than less as time went on. Definitely a mixed legacy with more negative than positive, IMO.

McCain’s political legacy should be largely that of someone who frequently and loudly toyed with doing the right thing and yet decided to do the other thing almost every single time, and who was a willing and active participant in the destruction of one country and helping the racist, authoritarian right rise in his own. What John McCain’s legacy will be, however, is the one crafted by the reporters and peers who loved him, who bought hook, line, and sinker that McCain was a different kind of politician, and not the fraud he actually was.

This has been making the rounds on leftist social media. Not going to pretend that I have a lot invested in the posthumous evaluation of some crusty old American senator, but to the extent I have anything to say, Blest says it better.

one of the last remaining american rinos. he will be missed by democrats and other endangered rinos on capital hill

It's interesting that people are becoming more and more willing to write slam pieces on prominent figures who die. On one hand I enjoy that it's becoming less kosher to just glorify whatever they did simply because they've died, but on the other hand it seems almost fetishistic how eager some are to get the last word in, to really drive home the point that the person who died is dead and they're plainly enthused that's the case.

my personal favorite after a death is when celebutards immediately jump on twitter to sling poo poo, not at the person who died, but at their political enemies as if the public cares about the histrionic screeching of people who are stupider than at least 2/3 of the general public *cough* kathy 'jihad' griffin (who has already done so much for the cause)

Take his name out of your mouth you piece of ****. You maligned his military service while you did everything to avoid serving. You attacked him repeatedly while you knew he was dying. And you cozied up to Putin while he did everything he could to oppose him.

**** You

so brave, so woke, so fierce

Trump went out of his way to kick the McCains while they were down so he is fair game for criticism IMO.

I'm sorry, who thinks that defending elderly white war-hawks is "woke"?

democrats on twitter

Condemn partisan point-scoring if it's worth something to you, but at least pick out the right set of clichés.

please inform me as to what are the 'right set of clichés.' i wouldn't want to be misinterperted as partisan by commenting on 'clichés' that a narrow part of the political spectrum strongly disapproves of and prefers to ignore.

As I said on another forum, I was startled to find out that McCain's mother is still alive at the age of 106. I would be surprised if at that advanced age she would be able to attend the funeral.

So you don't really understand what people mean when they say "woke", is that basically what we're driving towards?

allow me to unpack my previous statement and eliminate any confusion as to what i intended - when i used the terminology 'woke' i was alluding to the fact that putin without a doubt hacked our election and thrust the nazi want-to-be despot draumpf (his real german name) into power to subvert our democracy. kabul kathy refers to this in her post. by using the term 'woke' in the context of 'so brave, so woke, so fierce' i was explicitly referring to baghdad kathy's courage, or tenacity if you will, by speaking truth to power by poop posting on twitter and effectively rallying "the resistance" behind her just as she did previously by organizing a well advised and very effective photo shoot with the severed bloody head of this traitor nazi president. in this context one could infer that kathy 'ISIS' griffin is 'woke' enough to see through the state propaganda and realize that donald trump was never elected and that the united states is now a nazi dictatorship created by vladimir putin.

not only did she honor the late john mccain only hours after his passing with her eloquent twitter post, which without a doubt was her intent, but she also exposed this entire charade of a presidency for what it really is.

'so brave, so woke, so fierce'

This is the first time I’ve heard Kabul Kathy used. Wasn’t sure who it was referring to at first.

Rest in Peace. A true conservative, not the joke we have now. As a former Navy guy myself, I am perhaps biased. He's not perfect. I got irritated with him when he tried to rail against sports betting in my state around 17 years ago. And he was wrong about the Iraq war, but he eventually admitted it which I respect greatly. As much as I hate Trump style conservatism (though he's not truly a conservative), at least Trump isn't as hawkish about going to war as the McCain type conservatives. Perhaps McCain's only fault was he was too hawkish. A great man, and his leadership will be missed.

don't be ridiculous. Posting some troll news story on Facebook doesn't count as hacking our election.

i'm sorry but if someone was on facebook or twitter posting negative things about hillary clinton before the election then they were obvious russian bots and trolls and that's only what we know for sure so far. see what else mueller finds.
