I agree. More non native english speakers seem to know english as their second language than ever before. I used to want to learn german but now all the german's learn english in school. I work with a lot of people from india and they talk to each other in english because dialects are so regional. They all know hindi but usually would just rather use english if you don't know their local language.

Being able to do your own laundry would top my list right up their with food preparation. Everything else isn't critical.

I wonder how someone could not be able to do this. Washing machines are easy AF, and for cooking you can easily look up everything.
I have not cooked this year, but if I needed to make a 3 course menu on Saturday, thrn the internet will be my friend.

I think I will also add googling/checking skills. One of the guys I know, actually an IT guy, always asks me questions which he could easily figure out himself. I dont know why he doesn't, and it confuses me.

Being able to read emails, understand them, and give a meaningful answer in an acceptable time frame would also go on the list.

Riding a bycicle, swimming, driving a car, reading bus plans and street maps, guess that is also still basic.

When I was younger I had a whole drawer full of manuals. The wonder that is the internet has allowed me to throw them all away. So while I still grouse about all the misinformation that is the internet, there is the ultimate truth. MANUALS, and how-to videos.

I got rid of my box of manuals after this last move for exactly the same reason!

You have to sort out the "we re-post manuals that we get for free so we can profit" sources from the "we made this thing in the first place and hope you will look at the manual to solve your problem rather than pester us" sources.
