LK164 - CCM, AWM, Korea

It will be at least 14 more turns before we really have a need for Saltpeter (2 turns to finish Renaissance, then 4 turns each for Humanism -> Physics -> Ballistics). I am not even sure we will be able to learn all of those is just 4 turns each.
Navigation is the only available tech that I know we can learn in 4 turns (we might be able to learn it at 60% not 70%)
Currently, right after we learn Renaissance it will take us 6-7 turns to learn Humanism.
We should consider building Granaries. A larger population means more beakers for research.

I think Adventures come with Railroads.

Great progress! I'm no longer paranoid about a game-ending flood of new contacts.

That being said, I won't explore south of Seoul, preferring instead to push into Polish territory.

I'll build Granaries in our smallest cities and build some Pikes to bolster our defenses.

I've officially got it.

I'm no longer paranoid about a game-ending flood of new contacts.
I won't be conformable with a contact rush until we have a rail-net built.

Ah, LK, you're just paranoid. We're gathering momentum, so I think we're in good shape until rails come in. Once we have rails, we're unstoppable.

Any thoughts on city placement? There's a settler from Carthage.

It will need a lot of chopping, but to the west of Buffalo Trace has a lot of unused tiles. There is lot of other areas with decent blocks of grassland.

My only request is nothing between Seoul and MR.

I like either:
5 tiles SW of Buffalo Trace, next to Game + Sugar in FAT cross; or
4 tiles due S from Buffalo Trace has Big Game + Incense and many hills In FAT cross.
I chopped Forest = 15 shields. Spaced out a little can speed up some early builds. Takes as many turns to chop a forest as it does to irrigate.

Renaissance is in. Navigation takes 4, Clocks and Sacred Art take 5, and Humanism takes 7. I'm leaning towards Navigation first, hoping that Clocks or Sacred Art will only take 4 once we've grown our empire a bit.

Thoughts?

Go with Navigation. You might be able to drop the slider to 60% and get positive cash flow.

Sacred Art might be doable in 4 turns with some MM. Renaissance costs 2240 beakers and Sacred Art costs 2358, 118 beaker more. For ease of calculation, we need to find 120 beakers in 4 turns or 30 beakers per turn. This can be achieved by hiring Scientists. 8 Scientist * 4 Beakers = 32 beakers sounds simple.

However there is a catch, if the new Scientist was working a tile and producing 1 or 2 gold per turn you lost those beakers so you might only get a 1 or 2 beaker increase for that scientist. I found I had to hire many more than 8 Scientist to get 30 extra beakers. You might be able to hire the majority of scientists you need in the last 5 cities I captured. They do not have many multiplier buildings so a new Scientist there should be worth 2 or 3 beakers. If you can find maybe 12 Scientists from those cities you might be close to doing Sacred Art in 4 turns. Also, in some cities you might be able to replace the clown with an MP.

Further, I was monitoring my progress with CivAssist (not the most recent version) and found that it overstated what it thought I was getting. CivAssist thought I was going to get 580+ beakers when I only got 560.
It did report the correct amount that I earned each turn just not what it expected me to be earning.

I agree with Joe. IMO 4-turn research is the most important. We need to catch up, and can't afford 6 to 7 turns for a tech.

Pre-turn:

I wake up a Cataphract to bring in the supply shipment: -18 to -16gpt :D

Lots of MM for growth. I switch some builds (e.g. Granary in Haifa)

IBT:

1745 AD:

Knight rides down XB
Yogi Bear kills XB
Knight rushes Bombard and spikes the guns.
Knight kills Camel, who has a slow-ish death animation.

Knight kills Aztec MDI
Korean Sword narrowly kills MesoSpear

I can't lower the science slider and still get Renaissance next turn. Bummer.

IBT:

Polish XB kills our Pike
...another one kills a Knight

Renaissance > Navigation
Novgorod riots.
China completes Galileo's University
Japan completes East India Company.
Poles begin Magellan's.

1750 AD:

Knight kills Persian Musket near Seoul.

Enslaver kills XB
Enslaver kills another XB
Knight kills Polish Spear at Yekaterinburg.

Science slider to 60%, Navigation still due in 4 @ +34gpt.

IBT:

XB forces Enslaver to retreat

I CAN STILL ALT-TAB BETWEEN MY NOTES FILE AND THE GAME! <3

1755 AD:

Siege of Yekaterinburg:
Knight dies
Knight rides down his brother's killer
Enslaver kills XB and captuers the city. 2gp. I'll make sure not to spend it all in one place.

Siege XB kills Pike
Cataphract charges Winged Hussar! Cataphract wins!
Ultimate Enslaver retreats from XB. Maybe he's not so ultimate...
Enslaver kills XB
Siege XB kills the other XB

IBT:

Poles want an audience. Failing to get one, they kill one of our Knights
Resistance in Yekaterinburg ends.

1760 AD (T5):

Yogi converts Russian XB near Smolensk
Siege XB kills XB
I send a stack of Knights into the fog to find the Polish city of...Vladivostok

IBT:

Persia wants to talk. Nuh-uh.
At Vladivostok, two XBs force Knights to retreat
South Africa completes Cape of Good Hope.

1765 AD:

Battle of Smolensk:
Siege XB kills Pike
Siege-Bow dies (slow death animation)
Siege-Bow finishes off the Pike

IBT:

Some bombardments, no action
Navigation > Clocks

1770 AD:

The Fall of Vladivostok:
Siege XB crushes XB

IBT:

Persian XB suicides on our MDI

1775 AD:

Assault on Olsztyn (across a river, too):
Knight retreats
Knight kills Musketman
Knight kills Musketman an breaks the gates.

Culture-bomb Olsztyn. We'll need some roading crews to make good progress beyond here. Looks like the mountain range meanders off to the south from here.

Our XB kills XB
Knight retreats
Knight kills XB, promotes
Knight dies to invisible unit (lawyer?)
Knight kills invisible unit
Knight kills XB

IBT:

XB suicides on our Knight near Olsztyn, promoting him

1780 AD:

Leader rushes a Granary in Paegam

IBT:

Winged Hussar dies to our Pike near the front
We get a Clan.
Yekaterinburg deposes us. Fortunately, we "only" lose a Pike in the city.

1785 AD:

Science to 40%, Clocks still due next turn.

The offensive isn't quite stalled, just paused while we gather forces and build roads. I'd expect we can start the next push in 3-4 turns. Research is going well.

I built some buildings to avoid choking on unit support costs. We're practically steamrolling the AI on the Polish front as it is! We'll just need to keep an eye on that balance as we continue.

It is nice to see another civ officially dead. No flip risk in Russian cities and no more whining about attack the mother land.

It sounds like some movement toward crushing Poland. Any sense how much larger there empire is?

The Polish city of Vladivostok? Sounds like those two had a war. That does explain why so little in the way of Russian units hitting us.

ROSTER:
Multiple civs are probably south of Seoul. Please don’t explore that direction.

Unless it is a critical emergency please don’t use up any cash. Deficit funded research is desperately needed to try and close the tech gap.

Great Progress :goodjob: Looks like you found another Maghreb town and another source of Saltpeter.

Carthage is Maghreb capitol. I should have there UW.

That is probably an island they added later.

It could also be a peninsula stemming from the fog-city W of Olsztyn. If we do need to build a navy to cross to the island, I think we'll have to rush a bunch of boats in the Carthage area. Nothing there is producing much in the way of shields yet.

IMO rushing boats wouldn't be worth it. We need the cash to catch up in tech (deficit research).
We need to get to constant 4-turn techs.

Greebley, the Maghreb have 5 cities and there is a good chance they have at least 1 settler. It is doubtful you could eliminate them during your turnset.

If we are not to explore around Seoul for fear of meeting new civs, why should we be exploring other land masses? Do we want to meet Britain so they can send 50 ships to bombard us like they did last game?

Oh, that reminds me. I disbanded the Ancient Naval Explorers during my turnset to save on support costs. I recommend we continue doing so until we're comfortable about exploring.

I also agree that rushing boats wouldn't be worth it. We can keep pushing Poland, and once they're gone, maybe start exploring south of Seoul to find our next target (but I don't expect that to happen before LK's or maybe JJ's turnset).
