Is "Midwest" the correct term for this area?

Kentucky and West Virgina are not part of the Midwest, but the rest of it pretty much is.

It depends entirely...which part do you hate the most or feel uncomfortable to be associated with (east, west, middle, north, south)?

Oh, now I know, let's just call them all southern canadians.

Yes, I'd like to call it Mideast, but that would bring up all kinds of connotations. :mischief:

Let's go by Linguistic definitions.

The Greatlakes-New York accent would group southern ontario, great lakes region, Pennselevania, New York, and friends togather.

Let's make the one group?

Those states should not be grouped together one bit. First off, Ohio and Michigan share nothing in common with the other states except Illinois, so it would make sense to join them with New York and Pennsylvania. Tennessee and West Virginia have nearly always been considered part of the South. Finally, what's the deal with leaving out Oklahoma and Texas, those two are integral to the Midwest stereotype!

Geographically this is the Great Lake St. Lawrence Lowland, Carolinian region. But I understand Americans call it the Midwest. Geography has not yet been discovered in the USA.

What? Of course we do. Our industries are similar, our demographics are similar, our histories are similar..Western Ohio is completely indistinguishable from Indiana, for example, in just about every way.

Outside of the "rust belt regions", Penn and NY are not nearly as similar.

Tennessee and West Virginia have nearly always been considered part of the South.
Thats true. They are.

Are we talking about the same country??????

Huh? Ohio and Michigan are probably two of the most similar states in the Midwest.

The only place I think doesn't belong is the shaded states out west. And likely West VA, which apparently no one wants to claim.

Okies and Texanos are Southwesterners.

I like this map better, especially the divisions. Take Minneapolis from Minnesota and it is just like Iowa, Nebraska, the Dakotas etc.

Texans are Texans. Okies are Yankees.

Go Schooners!!! Go Schooners!!!

On topic: Bamspeedys map says W. Virginia is part of the South.

I understand the similarities between Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana. Maybe even Wisconsin, but I personally don't see similarities with the Great Plains states on anywhere near that same level. I actually think Pennsylvania is more similar than that area.

Why is it called the midwest, anyway? Must be some historical reason for it, right?

Well, there's the far West, and the Midwest. No near West, because that would just be stupid.
