Morality exists without your God.

People don't like a lot of Harris's argument, but I think that his re-emphasis of we can measure outcomes is timely. I'm mean, it's a "I knew that" statement, but it helps remind us how wrong relativism is.

snatre is kind of cute but to pronounce Nietzsche as peachy makes my ethnic pride look with evil eyes.

Out of curiousity, how would it be pronounced without the e?

In the UK it's generally pronounced "nee-chuh". Probably wrong, but not as bad as "nee-chee".

Oh, I was referring to how it'd be pronounced if there were no e at the end. With the e, I think the best way is "NEETSCH-eh"... although that doesn't quite get it either.

Nobody I hear ever states why they don't like Harris's argument. It seems his argument is what everyone (bar sociopaths) instinctively uses as a guide to a core morality be it religious or secular based.

It has only 2 premises that cannot be formally proven but can be strongly supported.
1. That human well being is the measure to be maximized by the moral code.
2. Decisions should based on reality.

It would certainly allow for some moral relativism just not the kind of mindless relativism that is unwilling to negatively judge the most barbaric practices if enough people in a culture hold these practices to be acceptable.

I'm not in the mood for this sort of thing right now, but I had one little thing to contribute.

Atheists need to be a little more tactful if we're really going to be heard. I'm not above throwing a few verbal molotovs myself, but that's only when you're trying to enrage someone.

I would suggest:

Godless Morality

or

Morality Without God?

I find that saying "the Christian God" or "your God" is pretty much the end of the discussion due to human psychology. Just say "God" for Atheismo's sake.

Except when one is trying to emphasize that their are other gods....

Exactly. I try always to remind my believing interlocutors that their beliefs are in no way substantially different from any of the other mythical fairy-tale-based deities people have claimed to 'know'. Their belief in, say, the Christian God, is nothing more than a contingent effect of where and when they happened to be born.

I go in and out of phases where I make a point of avoiding Capitalizing the word for a deity, and also pluralizing it.

Well, if it's a name (a proper noun) then I capitalize it: Allah, God, Jesus, Odin. If it's not a proper noun, but a normal noun, then it's lower case. Norse gods, Abrahamic gods

Nee-chuh is probably the best approximation you can get with English phonemes. But the Sartre = smarter rhyme offended me more anyway.
