A video of the confrontation, taken by progressive activist Timothy Heberlein of Organize Florida, shows several people shouting down Bondi as she leaves the theater escorted by law enforcement after seeing Won't You Be My Neighbor.

I guess not...

I understand why some people targeted high-profile Trump administration officials, but I am concerned about what will we see in response. Newton's third law of motion -- "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction" -- applies not just to physics, but perfectly to our hyperpartisan nation. Given our politics today, that law should actually be updated to: "For every action, there's an overreaction."

Thats progress

"If you think we're rallying now you ain't seen nothing yet," Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif, told supporters at a rally in Los Angeles over the weekend, "If you see anybody from that (Trump) Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they're not welcome anymore, anywhere."

Sure would create vacancies in the cabinet

I'm on the fence about this... What better form of protest than to publicly shame the guilty? They (hopefully) resign and nobody wants the new job. But there will be a retaliation, more aggressive security, violent confrontations and Trumpet's doing the same to their opponents while the rest of us put up with it - competing with Trump's narcissism wont make friends. Trump's response to Waters says it all - be careful about what you wish for. I'm sure Maxine will now be hounded by the Trumpet's bugles.

Yeah, while on the surface, it sounds like a wonderful idea, I would encourage it.
After considerable thought though, bad bad idea. This country is already getting way to nasty in terms of partisanship. It's gotten so bad, there are friends that I refuse to discuss politics with. I would hate to see back and forth shaming become an everyday norm. It would only escalate and eventually escalate to routine violence.

If you want things to change, vote for people who support the change as well, don't yell at politicians trying to watch a movie. You're not a part of their voter base, you'll never vote for them, you don't donate to their campaigns, they don't give a crap about you.

But I mean, if the current administration is so hated that they can't even go out and have a nice pleasant evening.. Yeah, okay, I'll allow this

Polite discourse ended the day this administration decided to start doing literal nazi **** (sticking people in concentration camps, confiscating their personal property, telling them it will be ok because "they're going to take a bath") and that a majority of Republican voters decided they were chill with that.

The pretense here is that if no one does it to the Trumpets then they won't do it. They already do, and have been for a long time. This is like saying "Well, the Democrats in congress shouldn't be obstructing since they don't want to give Mitch McConnell any ideas."

What would Mitch McConnell do with an idea?

Worth considering: Sanders (and whoever else will be targeted by this) are not being asked to leave because they are Republicans, or white, or old, or women, or men, or what-have-you. They are asked to leave because they publicly espouse heinous beliefs with zero consequence. Indeed, they espouse them from a position of authority. What consequence is there for Sanders et al to utter proclamations of dehumanization against foreigners? None, as far as I can tell. This is ignoring the other questionable beliefs they openly support and spread from channels with guaranteed spread.

I think it is fair to ask someone to leave if they are publicly representing an abhorrent belief. You would do this with someone who is lower class or homeless and people would be mostly in agreement that such an approach is fair and reasonable. The elites of Washington are fair game as well. It is fine to refuse service to someone who would likely make your clientele, or you yourself, lesser in the eyes of the law and society if they could. You reap what you sow.

:agree: Sam Adams, who spent years maneuvering the American colonies into rebelling from England, had a simple rule for swaying opinion: "Put you you enemy in the wrong. Keep him there."

Donald Trump excels at putting himself in the wrong. It is self defeating for us to rush in and seize the low ground from him. :wallbash:

I think there is going to be a civil war, and I kind of want there to be. I don't want to share a country with the deportarians anymore.

I was listening to this podcast about the fall of the Roman republic. It's a complex issue, but essentially the rule of law started breaking down once they started physically attacking their opponents, which then later escalated to purges and dictatorship. I realize it's not the same thing as personal attacks by name calling, but this whole naming and shaming thing could escalate to violence if things go bad

This presupposes that there is some consequence for being in the wrong. At which point does the opposition, from its lofty vantage point on the moral high ground, claim victory if the President, or King George, or whoever, continues to be in the wrong with impunity?

Besides, I'm not sure Sam Adams works as a great counterexample against civil disobedience.

Yeah, when they go low, we go high, except then they won the election.

The idea that "we" have put ourselves in the wrong by making Trump Administration figures feel unwelcome at restaurants, when they are locking children up in cages, is just preposterous.

Interesting. Remind me again, which side was the one with all the guns? But let's say you win your civil war, what then? A: Exterminate all "deportarians" B: Suspend democracy in favor of an autocratic government to keep deportarians out of power C: Keep democracy, but start another civil war if the deportarians ever come to power

The biggest lie ever told was that Democrats don't own guns.

Democrats just aren't so insecure in their white skin that they have to craft a survivalist fantasy about how much Freedom they would ring with their arsenal should the Commies come a-knockin'.

Right so when the right passes bills and pushes for court cases to allow them to actively discriminate on the basis of gender/race/religion, that's acceptable political action. But god forbid someone make a personal stand and disallow racists from dining at their establishment. Surely that crosses a line.

I mean, it's not like the Republicans run pedophile candidates, rapists and KKK wizards. That would obviously be a bridge too far.

Oh wait....

Also lol, if we live in such a fragile society that shaming will inevitably lead to violence then really we're all screwed.

Right? Hell, Bill Maher of all people owns a gun. I used to own one and probably will again. Liberal do own guns, they just don't tend to be fully ammosexual. They are just a little gun-curious.

It's not as if privately-owned guns would be particularly important in a civil war anyway...

Just deporting them all would work fine. Bonus is we get to laugh about the irony while it's happening.
And where will you deport them? If you don't want to share a country with deportarians, don't you think you should aim for a peaceful solutions? I'm sure they don't want to share a country with you either

Remind me again, who's the commander-in-chief again? What about the military itself? Is that a strong base of support for the democrats?
