pre-release info New Civ Game Guide: Hawai'i

pre-release info
Has it been understood elsewhere what "marine" terrain is? What's the distinction with marine vs coast? (Starting bias has both).
I would assume Marine also would include Ocean, as it looks like some deep water is adjacent to that land as well?

This looks super interesting to play.
And I like the wonder very much for all naval games (which is... 80% of all exploration era games now?)

A tad bit disappointed that there is no canoe unique unit. But unique infantry makes them more versatile, and it would be somewhat strange if a canoe would outclass a carrack.
And a bit disappointed with the look of the city. The Hawaiian buildings look great! But they use the SEA buildings (admittedly, probably the best of the available ones? And that observatory/lighthouse and hospital look quite off in general.

I’m not seeing how myself. It just looks like culture bonuses to me. I’m kinda disappointed. I was hoping for something more unique like Civ VI Māori. But I’d honestly love to hear how its gameplay is unique. I’m hoping I’m just overlooking something/not thinking creatively.
They have healing priests, which are really unique already. If those priests could heal ships while crossing oceans, that's double to uniqueness even before going to other features.

It seems Marine is the new name for Ocean Tiles, i.e. all Sea tiles which don't border land Tiles. (These who do are Coastal)
I thought that, but Alexander's Hetaroi above pointed out that in the screenshot, we can see both the dark blue and light blue water tiles bordering land.

Yeah that’s nice but for a civ all the way out there in the middle of the ocean, that doesn’t historically chain well with all the other civs in the base game and is taking a slot from one that could, it’s just I was hoping for something really asymmetric and unique.

Slightly off topic but I do find it funny that even though we KNOW and have known about Songhai we’re revealing them last for Exploration civs. I’m very happy and excited about Hawai’i but that would have been a good final “WOW” reveal for the exploration civs

I’m honestly expecting to get a modern civ as the next reveal too since there was a delay on Persia

Perhaps it's a typo and should read "marine resources"?
I suppose anything is possible but it's stated like 5 times in the write-up...And that doesn't explain the different types of water bordering the land, which is definitely new and makes me wonder.

Moana 2 is out tomorrow; so they had to pre-empt it. This is for sure the reason with no irony meant.

So, what are the chances we get Maui as leader, instead of Kamehameha or Lili'uokalani? :shifty:

Mana's Tier1 Effect seems like the nuts like... free culture?! from ANY environmental event that adds Food?

This includes Floods, Sandstorms, Volcanoes, etc... Imagine if there's a Hawai'an leader that would allow you to switch from Egypt into Hawai'i and rake-up insane levels of Culture from your starting spot.

I'm liking the idea of going Mississippian-> Hawai'i, provided I can find and settle the coast without difficulty.

So glad Hawai’i is in the game! I’ve wanted them for a while. Culture gameplay is my thing too so that’s an added bonus.

I don't think historical chaining is important, but I understand what for others it could have some value. As for chaining, they could do it with both SEA and American civs. Khmer are ok as their Antiquity predecessor and Mississipians could be a surprising twist. Both America and Meiji Japan could work as their Modern successor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't all Exploration civs revealed to date had both a resource-bias and a terrain-bias? If that's true, then it would lead credence that this should be marine resource + coastal.

Are those Khmer buildings in the screenshot? There looks to be like a mix of thatched and tiled roof styles.

The Shawnee have it as a tradition too adding culture and production - random but could be useful when you have a bunch of disastwrs
