pre-release info New Civ Game Guide: Meiji Japan

pre-release info
Love the Ability and a lot of the design overall; this really whets my appetite for Samurai, Shinobi, and the eventual Edo period Japan that will lead into this
Yeah Edo is very clearly mentioned in the description, they are probably amongst the first DLC I'd imagine.

Very happy with Meiji, it looks very fun to play.

After Civ 6's Brazil's Minas Geraes, I'm a bit iffy about having ship classes as unique units since it feels weird for me having an entire navy as a single named class. Not gonna lie, I was predicting among my friends that Japan would have a Naval UU, but I thought it would be the Kongo class battlecruiser instead.

Mikasa class with it's gimmick is a nice nod to its own history, but my own issue if it's gonna replace the entire line is that the Mikasa was its only vessel for its class, and the IJN had multiple other ships for the battleship role.

That being said though, the Mikasa Museum ship is one of the places I want to visit when I travel to Japan.

i love the air/naval focus. a couple paths that i have been theorycrafting to be strong...

1. leader: military/science (charlegmane, fred). we are going for a quality air/naval superiority here. we start out with the maurya. maurya will allow us to start building our science and get some land units out for basic security / defense and expanding into our general starting area.

2A our most difficult/meaningful choice. if we are going for an air/naval superiority, we have a couple options here. the first would be Hawaii. if possible, expanding as much as possible on islands and tropical/marine biome will allow us to establish the foundation for an oceanic overseas empire. Hawaii is likely going to be a very strong option to expand rapidly in this way.
2B: Chola. Chola leads naturally from maurya and its naval superiority can go a long way towards building up the naval power that will secure expansion overseas and onto any islands or coastal areas. also will expand the economy thus allowing us to create a bigger/more expensive army in modern era.

3. these set up perfectly to lead into Meiji. Hawaii in particular should lead directly too meiji, but chola hopefully will have an easy unlock to get japan as well. Meiji is when you will begin your aggressive expansion. the air/naval traditions unlocked here will help you build carriers and use your zeros and unique battleships to quash any resistance across the seas. also, navigable rivers should allow some creative play to even attack more inland targets.

The Meiji game guide shows off the Zero, seemingly with color variation, which is cool to see. Though the first trailer did show a Zero with a bomb, presumably a ground attack unit, and since we can't see the underside too well on either Zero in the picture, it's possible one could be a cultural appearance for a ground attack aircraft.

It looks like Prussia will probably get a unique commander/Great Person based on screenshots and that Great Person video.
I thought the part of the Great People video you're talking about was showing off Jacobins since there were French buildings in the backround. A commander would be cool, I'd just rather it not be the powdered wig next to the bland Hohenzollern flag. I don't think it looks particularly unique, at least not for any good reasons.

Japan without samurai. Feels weird!

Joke aside, this seems like a solid design. Another cool effect of the age splits is we can focus on transition periods like these.

But yeah, I'll be waiting for Edo like many others!
