New Civilization Patch -- Modern Greece

Some thoughts:

Greece starts out quite behind in the tech race. Not even having Scientific Method or Corporation during this time is quite punishing. To compound this problem, Greece doesn't have easy access to any good land; the immediate Mediterranean is typically held by much stronger powers who have a significant tech lead on you, while you ahev no real way of catching up. Now, I'm not the best player in the world, but for example, in 1967 I basically controlled all of the Ottoman Empire, and I was just then completing Assembly Line, while most other civs were completing the Apollo Program.

The UP is great. It can turn even marginal North African/Arabian cities into useful and productive ones. Nice job on this one.

I usually train a spy to contact West Europe at the very beginning. The Greeks take the lead in Democracy:D Settling 3 cities in Greece proper(including Crete) can be a good help, due to their UP.

And thanks for your feedback!

Selling Democracy can buy nationalism, scientific method and steel. The real problem is the extremely law research rate.

Some more feedback:
*Eleutherios Venizelos should be the leader, king George did few things if any. If it is about to include one more leader I propose Trikoupis. (Trikoupis until 1900, Venizelos then).
*Maniots aren't useful. They are only good in capturing Belgrad and Trapezus. How about giving them high chance of withdraw? Turkey is too strong and high withrawal chance will be useful. Alternatively give them increased mobility, so they can assault Turks and go back to safety again. Or high defence value (i.e. +50% against rifles, +50% against cavalry). Or even better, make them extremely cheap, to compete against Turkey. I like their appearence however.
*Names, you borrowed the Byzantine ones :D. Well, I conquered Belgrad and it was renamed Signitium! Conquered Rome and called Roma. They should be Beligradi and Romi or Rome respectively. I hope Iskenderiye is Alexandreia.
*The flag is the finnish one, maybe revert the colours (white cross in blue background was the official), and the icon from the selection menu should be the same as flag, avoid to include real coat of arms in the game. Maybe it is better to make the flag horizontical blue and white strips to fully avoid including real flags and coat of arms as much as possible.
*The UP is really awsome! Good job!

Anyway, really great job! I try to win the 1700AD scenario but it is at least a hard one. The key is occupying Italy or collapsing Turkey, but too hard. Have you won it?

I have win it in Emperor, Epic. In fact you don't need any techs to win a UHV even in emperor, all you need to do is capture Constantinopolis and Ankara, and get Alexanderia and Jerusalem by your UU and riflemen, war with Egypt who has only musketmen. then build cathedral of 3-4 religions, stock exchanges and the Opera House in Constantinopolis

You were lucky with Egypt. In 1700AD scenario Turkey controls from Tripoli to Bagdad and from Odessa to Al Usqur, they have 4 defending rifles per city and a 12 unit stack including cavalry and cannons to crash your pitty army in just one turn :( Anyway, it must be a great game.

Actually it needs some luck. But always Russia is war with turkey, you need to wait for a moment when Russian attack Istanbul. If they can't capture it in 1 turn and leave 1-2 Turk riflemen, then it's your chance.

Egypt and Moors almost respawn in every game, 8-9 out of 10. They spawn without riflemen, so it's easy to capture all the North Africa.

Thanks for detailed feedback!

In fact I was thinking of Venizelos either. In any case he is a Greek native himself, even if the controversy around him. But I failed to find out an appropriate leadhead. And there is an existing George I leadhead. So I chose the easy way;) The same reason for Byzantine citynamemap, because I don't have a modern Greek one. More suggestions will be welcomed.

The flag comes from Wikipedia. They said it's the flag for Greek Independence War in 1821. Using real coat of arms is not a good idea, indeed. Maybe it should be replaced in next version.

In the case of strategy, I think it is interesting for players to research different strategies. Pre-determined strategy should be avoided. So the "Megali Idea" UHV can be achieved by many ways. Conquering south-east or east Asian cities, or peaceful colonization could also be a good strategy. You don't have to fight ottomans to death at the beginning. If you are really overwhelmed, a "British way"-- go abroad, grow stronger, and then turn back could also be a reliable way to take back Anatolia. The UP could be a great help in colonization. That's why UU aren't that powerful. Anyway they are strong in Greek and Anatolian mountains, and can easily defeat musketeers.

Well, I checked, it is right except these two roman names. Roma should be Romi or Rome and Belgrad should be Beligradi (Singidunum is should still be Signidunon).

The white background flag was widely used in the war of indepedence, but never officially adopted.

I thought about colonisation, but the borders are closed against me :(. It seems I'm really unlucky in my game.

is it available for the latest SVN?or did the mod stop?
