pre-release info New First Look: Xerxes

pre-release info
The personas feel a little too Scooby Doo for my tastes. Xerxes here pulls off a mask and a robe and *GASP* it was Xerxes all along!

Can't wait for the modern leaders to do a tiktok transition where they put their hand on the camera
An accurate description if Ben Franklin is around today.

Leader looks great!

Persia to Mongolia is a bummer but an expected one.
Why? The Ilkhanate existed. This is an actual transition of ruling class significant regions of the Persian cultural sphere went through in reality. Imho it's exactly the kind of fringe transition options where the system shines. We don't need civ transitions for stacks. We don't need Rome into Siam. Having exactly these kinds of options that represent historic shifts and cultural influences merging is where the system can provide depth and cool switch-ups.

It's the same leader Ara History Untold picked.....will Firaxis ever acknowledge the Sassanids ......I dunno how historically accurate his look is here.

Firaxis must be enamored with Achaemenid Persia, simply because they got conquered by Alexander the Great.

And why two Personas for Xerxes? Prolly an indication we won't get anymore Persian leaders in Civ7.

I really like Xerxes. The economic bonuses seem quite powerful. They remind me of Julius Caesar's in civ6. I could see Xerxes players getting a lot of gold. And the military bonuses is great for wars of conquest. So I could see this leader being really fun to play because you can go warmongering and get lots of gold to build more units.

I think it's bad that you showcase both persona's on the same level in the video while only one is in the Base game, I find it to be misleading for the buyer

Yes you say so at the beginning but:
It's in tiny font size
It appears for a very short time
You say so before saying there are 2 personnas

That's plus the fact that persona's videos go back and forth between them which makes ot hard to keep track of whose personne does what doesn't help

I'm a bit pissed that you show content that is not in base game for the marketing between that and a whole stream for the Shawnee

It's pretty good, except I don't think any dye that vibrantly green was available in the time period. Blue, red, or saffron would be more historical (or purple, of course).

Preorder civs have always been treated as part of the base game, though, just like Monty in Civ6.

Sure it existed for about 80 years, but that’s a blip in most people’s eyes.

Any Asian civ, essentially, could transition into Mongolia by the same logic.

It’s fine, and I understand that this is what you get with ten civs per age at launch.

Green is always a dangerous color for dyes and paints both: most greens are very t ransient, and under any kind of weathering - sunlight, water, etc - will fade or distort in unexpected ways. Green dragoon coats on display at the Musee d' Armee in Paris are either the basic medium green if never exposed, or a dull gray-green or a light acid-apple green, and they all started as the same color. Really bright green as in the graphic shown pretty much had to wait for the aniline chemical dyes of the 19th century, and famously, they used an arsenical base chemical that made them deadly poisonous!

To the best of my knowledge, this is the best contemporary depiction of him:

- and it's not readily available for closer inspection, since it's now in the National Museum in Iran.

Most of the depictions of the Achaemenid Shahs look very much alike, but we don't really know if that's just 'family resemblance' or Artistic Convention similar to the Egyptian: "All Shahs/Pharaohs look like this regardless of age, sex, or anything else. Stand up straight and put on the false beard."

They read the fans comments and thought that Persia could benefit from a non-warmonger leader as well.

It's really not surprising considering Mongolia will also likely go into Qing China, Mughal India, or Russia.

I'm really liking the latest leaders quality, I certainly hope the early ones we saw were just a product of WIP and they are working on having them all look as cool.
My think is that is the case, problem is first impression is everything and they used those leaders for the impression.

The model looks really good, but I don't like the discrepancy in quality in the leader models, it reminds me of the later leaders in Civ VI, with awesome looking ones like Nzinga and Wu Zetian, but also boring models like Ramses or Theodora.

The difference is that it was pretty late in development and it was acceptable because of that.

I hope they rework some of the leader models they showed initially, like Augustus, they are starting to look out of place when seen alongside Xerxes, Trung Trac or Tecumseh.

(I don't actually know what the issue is with Augustus. When I look at each element separately, like clothing, it doesn't seem that bad... but as a whole, something is off. Is it just lighting or something?)

Almost certainly the leaders we saw before were WIP, but as @TheMarshmallowBear said it was really ill-advised of them to show such clumsy models instead of focusing on polishing a couple up for a good first impression. I'm happy with the last few leaders we've seen, but a lot of angst could have been avoided if the first round of leaders didn't look like they were ripped from Mass Effect 1. (Which is mean. ME1 models looked better than that.)

Indeed, light and shader extremely change the final quality of 3D model.
