None Shall Pass 3 [Game Thread]

I now realise how awful conversion is at least.

I was highly annoyed that I was converted but mostly because the situation Arakhor was in was (IMO) unwinnable.

I've already detailed my problems in the QT - but I'll wait until Zack posts roles, etc.

Why target me for conversion? I would have obviously been lynched when the game didn't end in your death

Conversion was a two-part mark and convert action over two nights and I'd already marked you the night after I recruited Visorslash. So, it was either hope that we could somehow hang on for two nights or simply try to convert you as well last night.

That was definitely for the best. It looks like I was the other option you were considering, but I was actually unconvertible, so you would've totally wasted a night by trying to mark me. I never told Visor that I was unconvertible because I was hoping that he'd try to convert me at some point-- I wasn't sure that he had been converted, but I wanted to be able to catch him in the act of converting me.

I couldn't figure out a way to make the showdown fair that wouldn't result in a total slaughter. Numbers were too disparate.

Have to agree there- no real way to make 10 vs. 3 fair.

And so Star Wars triumphed, and, following the customs of our galaxy, the remaining natives were fitted with http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Slaving_collar Slaving Collars, and made to dance for our ammusement. Those who were insufficiently entertaining were fed to Rancors http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Rancor, but since we are a merciful and enlightened civilization, most were allowed to live.

In all seriousness, regarding balance:
the two towns were balanced. Bad luck, and the early loss of a vig doomed LOTR town

The two mafias were too weak. Starting with only two players makes them very vulnerable to early lynches.

Town did very well this game overall, not just due to luck, but due to very good play by town-sided players, notably including Visor and Al Sips (and myself :smug: ).

What did the ring actually do?

Maybe wait to critique balance so definitively until you know the game's setup. :) They were mafia/cult hybrids with plenty of recruitment opportunity, starting with more than two members each in a game this size could easily lead to snowballing, particularly with a split town. Any balance problems were not due to numbers. A cult leader / godfather being randomly lynched d2 is going to seriously hurt that cult. It's the nature of a faction that relies on conversion. Early hits can hurt bad, but too much starting firepower quickly becomes overpowered.

One thing in particular that hurt the mafia teams was the towns were much more cooperative than in the first game. LOTR didn't seem to care that they were hemorrhaging members and losing the numbers game badly. On that note, they are a good reminder of the fact that the result is one possible outcome of many and not necessarily the most likely outcome, and why a faction bring crushed doesn't make it unbalanced - SW town and LOTR town were exactly the same, yet one annihilated the other. The quick demise of the scum doesn't automatically mean the game's setup screwed them. I'll do a more thorough analysis later, and i recognize the game had its issues, but I want to discourage confirmation bias and condemnation from a place of relative ignorance.

The ring was just a tiebreaker. I got the idea from Winston's game, where the mysterious and seemingly important "influence" acted as a simple tiebreaker.

As I said to Visor at one point, I think you could have played up the town rivalry much more by having all the mirrored powers only work on your own faction. After all, what with two watchers, two blockers, two trackers and two doctors all apparently coordinating, the Magfia were simply going to get hosed.

Also, as soon as the mirrored set-up was obvious, I literally had no safe power-claim (after BSmith's death, I had six different powers I could use at night), because my passive block (which I assume was shared with Jarrema) was the only power that no one else appeared to have and, let's face it, I still can't think of a pro-town reason to knock out people's passive immunities.

Agreed on both points, those were the main problems I should have addressed. I didn't anticipate the towns deciding to essentially pretend it was a normal mafia game and work together so closely, as the towns having lots of abilities seemed to work fine in the first game. I didn't give you a concrete claim in your cover roles because some in NSP2 felt constrained by having a specific ability in their cover role, but that was clearly a misstep on my part.

I'm likely done hosting games where the vast majority of players have a night action (as was the case here). It's problematic to balance and tedious to send out night results with the 30-second limit between PMs.
