Northern Colorado wants to secede, form new state

Northern Colorado a state?

So let's play along here. Where would they get the tax money to pay for schools, police and road service? Where would they get water? How would the state get money?
By exploiting the disproportionate representation that small, sparsely populated states have in Washington to divert truckloads of federal cash in their direction, I guess.

I mean, if you declared yourself a state you'd be entitled to at least your own seat in the Senate. Does that not sound like a good deal to you?

EDIT- And I guess your dog could have a Senate seat too.

Since this state would be significantly smaller than Wyoming, wouldn't this also change congressional/districting apportionment radically?

I don't know about radically, but it would make a few other congressional districts larger by a few thousand people for the next census I guess.

This district would be what, 200,000 people? I guess the average house seat is around 750,000, so that might futz the numbers a little bit on the margins, but not that much.

I thought it was over 500,000 by now.

More than this. 310million / 435 = 712,000. Somewhat worse for most in that many states have less than 712,000 people, but still have 1 Rep. And so that distorts the numbers for the others. And, of course, the math does not come out even.

Yeah, you know, this may not be a bad idea if it is done along with a massive increase in the size of the House of Representatives. 700K is just WAY too many people for one rep. The Senate I like having it small and prestigious, but the house should be the people's house and having so few reps for so many people really destroys that. Let's get it down to around 100K or so and have a 3101 (can't have that tie!) size house. Mind you, that means the current Capital would have to be converted over to just the Senate, which I am sure they would love cuz more room, and then we'll ahve to resurrect Speer to have him design a huge new dome for the House.

So anyway, yeah sure, let them break off ONLY if it is done in conjunction with a long overdue resizing of the House.

(all serious except for Speer being the guy for the dome design. just that..well he did design a kick butt one some decades back)

That has been suggested by a number of people. Possibly it's an idea who's time is coming. :dunno:

Secession is never talked about in downstate IL, btw. Maybe the elites mention it but it's not something that ever comes up with ordinary people. Sure, they joke about Chicagoland being some sort of corrupt hellhole but secession? Nope.

It would have to be a win-win for all involved, but only if they aren't allowed to join the US afterwards. Let them create their own country where they would no longer have any power to threaten and harass others, that is other than the minorities that happen to live where they do. But that is already occurring now...

promoting renewable energy

I get the anger with raising rates but what's even wrong with renewable energy?

Downtown winning the early polls for the new Senate seat. Better get up and move to Northern Colorado

They don't need schools. God and the bible is enough. Water and money? Err... God will give them miracles!

If state government is to have any real meaning, it needs to change to conform to the realities on the ground.

I'm sure regular guys never propose this but pols do propose it sometimes to score cheapie points.

I know it's one of those things that get floated from time to time in political circles but it never comes up with normal people...it's just not an issue for non-pols. Especially when the state budget isn't imploding, people downstate benefit enormously from public projects and services paid for larglely by revenues generated in Chicagoland. You have to be effing stupid and the hardest of hardcore Republican to think downstate would be better off without Chicago. fwiw, I have seen more talk and bluster from Chicagoans who want to secede from downstate to cut the 'deadweight'.

How does it compare to cries for the partition of California?

Can anyone whip up a revised map of the US, should these counties form a state?

I know it's going to look ridiculous, but I must see just how ridiculous.

We need to have a revised map with all the proposed new states!

This is the first I've ever heard of NE Colorado making its own state - perhaps he meant to have all of rural Colorado secede from the Denver-Boulder corridor? That might make a little more sense.

Let's split California into the proposed five states. Also, form a state consisting of Oregon and Washington east of the Cascades, maybe including the proposed State of Jefferson too. Texas should also be split into five states - have one that is gerrymandered to include all Democratic-leaning areas of the state (Austin, and narrow corridors from it to include Dem-leaning parts of Dallas and Houston, and then another narrow corridor south to include Hispanic-majority areas in San Antonio, then expand to include to all places south and west, extending along the Rio Grande all the way to El Paso). Then the other four states can be Republican - have two in West Texas and two in East Texas.

Moving east, let's form the state of Chicagoland, consisting of Cook County and all counties it directly borders (including Lake, IN), leaving Illinois and Indiana solidly R too. Then we need to have Upstate New York form its own state separate from NYC + suburbs + Long Island. Also all of Florida more than 30 mi north of the I-4 corridor should secede and make its own state. Am I missing anybody?
