Northern Colorado wants to secede, form new state

Northern Colorado a state?

You've got to love South Carolina's tiny little strip, don't you? Like, what did they actually hope to do with that, and why did it take them until 1787 to give it up?

Isn't it interesting how being near large bodies of water seems to foment freedom and liberty, at least until the water gets warmer...

You can't realistically split Texas 5 ways and make each new state Tea Party crazy.

Sounds like someone has forgotten about the wonderful world of Gerrymandering! :D

Gerrymandering works by creating districts that heavily favor the other party and even more districts that create closer districts for your party - so at least one "state" would not be Tea Party crazy and the others may be at greater risk of the Tea Partiers not winning elections in wave years where the wave is crashing in the wrong direction.

While I'd be in favour of some revisions of state borders, this particular example sounds terrible. Then again, Forma's idea of them getting their own country has merit.

The idea of Northern Colorado is beyond silly. Too bad these politicians and the lot won't get run out of town, they would be indemnifying their new "state" to instant poverty and deficits

Just think what we could have avoided if we simply allowed the South to secede. Now, I think we should encourage the red states to do so. Perhaps we can even give them financial incentives.

I mean yea, the time immediately after independence was the great figuring out of everything, including state borders.
Also, some states were actually at war with each other before the Constitution was signed.

A lot of them will probably need financial incentives. They're enjoying sucking the federal government's teat too much at the moment.

Skipped most of this thread, just wanted to say that I laughed at your first line DT. Though, from what I can tell, downstate Illinoisans don't so much want to secede so much as they would like to kick Chicago out. Indiana can have it. Don't spoil Wisconsin. Their governor is kinda a dipweed but I fear what Chicago-style governance would do to the beer/cheese/fireworks. I mean, look at it this way: You drive north and cross a state border and the first road signs are "Welcome to Wisconsin" and "Beer/Cheese/Fireworks." You drive back south and cross a state border and the first road signs are "Welcome to Illinois" and "Pay Toll Ahead." I think that about captures the zeitgeists of the states.

I lived in the southern part of the state for most of my life, there was a movement that wanted the southern tip to leave, but it never really got much support from your average resident. Kicking Chicago out definitely is a popular idea though, culturally the rest of Illinois is fairly similar to the rest of the midwest (southern part starts flirting more and more with southern culture) whereas Chicago is sort of its own beast that is corrupt on top of that.

I get the impression that you can go to just about any patch of dirt in the US, and there'll be somebody who wants it to secede from something. How far wrong am I?

That's always been my impression of Great Briton. Or does England throw that off?

People just dislike the English. It must be our radiant good looks and well-behaved tourists. :)

Yea those radiant yellow stained teeth, rioting mobs, and obsession with sports you all are terrible at have nothing to do with why people dislike the English, superiority complexes, etc. :mischief:

You're just mad you you lost the Civil War. Weren't gonna leave the Union on account of some Plantation owning dandies from Richmond.
