Perhaps I am the only one who goes to obscure newspapers hoping to find amusing letters to the editor. If so, this thread will sink to the bottom like whale . On the other hand perhaps you folks would find amusement in a few good ones I found today.

In Bismarck North Dakota, an out-of-town gentleman wishes to point out the country is going to heck in a hand basket.
Let’s get this straight. America is destructing before our eyes, and no one cares. Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants are flowing across our borders with diseases, drugs, dependence and some with intent to harm you and your family.

Meanwhile in Dothan Alabama a fellow is asking if Muslims can be US citizens. I left my pocketknife in Dothan, but have no desire to go back to get it.
Can Muslims pledge allegiance to our flag or serve in our military and take an oath to defend our country against all enemies, both foreign and domestic, so help them God? Are they legal citizens of the USA?

In Mesquite, Nevada, the community is split asking if the city should allow the sale of medical marijuana. A lady helpfully points out that only a small number of people need this medication, therefore they should not be allowed to have it.
There are only 30 – 50 people in Mesquite with cards for
medical marijuana. This represents less than a quarter of 1%. That means that the City
Council is contemplating ordinances which effect 100% of our population, but which
would only possibly help less than 1%.

They were the best way of finding crazy before the internet. After the comics, my first destination in my local paper.

Many years ago, a man wrote into my hometown paper to explain The Government was seeding the clouds to make rain. He knew this because at night he could hear four-engined airplanes over the mountain.

How could you hear a four-engined airplane? You would just know it is a plane, you couldn't know how many engines it had.

Once when I was in North Carolina I saw a letter to the editor in which the writer warned people about the dangers of leaving your pets outside. She believed they were often captured to be used in Satanic sacrifices.

That does happen, more often than people think, especially if they're black.

Not an unusual question.
A Muslim's first allegiance is to his fellow Muslim. His Islamic community is the strongest bond he has. Notions of loyalty toward nation states ranks far below even if it registers.
Muslims are also morally permitted to lie and trick non-Muslims. It is called kitman and taqiyya.

inb4 someone calls me racist/islamophobe for stating facts

They said the same things about papists, especially ones who might be dreaming of elected office.

Same thing with Jews...

Uhh..i'm so tired of these types of comparisons. It is sheer whataboutery.

Same thing with Jews...

Fortunately, the Jewish record in Europe isn't that bad.
They have been the model minority.

The notion of 'religious loyalty' (just a term I invented on the go just to explain) is very different in Islam compared to Catholicism. In Islam, there is the Ummah, whereas Catholicism has the Bishop of Rome. Muslims owe loyalty to fellow Muslims while Catholics owe loyalty to the bishop of Rome.

Though I agree that in both cases, the effects are often overstated for malicious purposes. Yet, at the same time, both Islam and Roman Catholicism have undermined the unity of polities to malicious effect as well and it should not be understated.

Same thing with Jews...

AFAIK, Jews are only permitted to charge interest to gentiles, not much more.

Uhh..i'm so tired of these types of comparisons. It is sheer whataboutery.

Well, both the Roman Catholic Church and Islam have at times undermined the legitimate authority of states. Now, I do not wish to promote Islamophobia or Anti-Catholic hysteria - which often has been worse than Islamism and Political Catholism - though pointing out the cons of too much Catholic influence doesn't make one oblivious to the cons of too much Islamic influence.

Fortunately, the Jewish record in Europe isn't that bad.
They have been the model minority.

The problem is that a lot of people believed blood libel, host desecration and that sort of things.

Do you know if that's really true ?
When there are news reports of finding mutilated cats and one of mine is black, do you honestly think that I'd risk her life for one second by allowing her outside? I didn't let any of my cats out while that was going on.

It doesn't mean they are satanists. News reports about satanic cults were just a lot of hype. There may have been a psychotic individual, the result of an animal or false reports.

A Catholic's first allegiance is to his fellow Catholic. His Roman Catholic community is the strongest bond he has. Notions of loyalty toward nation states ranks far below even if it registers.

A Jews's first allegiance is to his fellow Jew. His Jewish community is the strongest bond he has. Notions of loyalty toward nation states ranks far below even if it registers.

Now, I'm generously assuming that you'd agree that these two alternative constructions are at least slightly hysterical. And that you would agree even while aware both represent the strict position of each religion. So why does the first one seem more reasonable to you? Have you found that most Muslims are more likely to privilege religion above nationality, whereas mos Catholics and Jews do not?

I think Quackers' main concern is that Muslim men are getting all the girls and soon there will be an unfortunate demographic shift.

We had some dude from America (Walt Wawra) cause quite a stir a couple summers ago with this letter:

Recently, while out for a walk in Nose Hill Park, in broad daylight on a paved trail, two young men approached my wife and me. The men stepped in front of us, then said in a very aggressive tone: “Been to the Stampede yet?”

We ignored them. The two moved closer, repeating: “Hey, you been to the Stampede yet?”

I quickly moved between these two and my wife, replying, “Gentle-men, I have no need to talk with you, goodbye.” They looked bewildered, and we then walked past them.

I speculate they did not have good intentions when they approached in such an aggressive, disrespectful and menacing manner. I thank the Lord Jesus Christ they did not pull a weapon of some sort, but rather concluded it was in their best interest to leave us alone.

Would we not expect a uniformed officer to pull his or her weapon to intercede in a life-or-death encounter to protect self, or another? Why then should the expectation be lower for a citizen of Canada or a visitor? Wait, I know – it’s because in Canada, only the criminals and the police carry handguns.
