Yes, you read that right, people are trying to get this video banned as "hateful"

So apparently if you support DADT you are the world's biggest bigot and do not even have the right to give your opinion, if a a holocaust denialist posted about how the holocaust ever happened he probably wouldn't receive this much hate on YouTube.

Also, I'm not completely sure as to where I stand on Don't Ask don't tell, but screaming bigot does nothing to help your cause.

After this thread, I plan on taking a vacation from all things political and retreat to the Civ forums, so, for a while, you'll be free of me.

Moderator Action: Fixed video link.

I didn't see anything in that article where people are trying to get the video banned. It is mostly being mocked.

Honestly I see no debate here on Perry's part.

Only a statement.

I would say there is a significant difference, yes?

Well, the whole movement to ban it would be a violation of free speech, and when people want to get rid of free speech, it is usually because they can't stand the fact that someone might possibly have a different opinion and are scared of other's opinions.

Where is the whole movement to ban it? Some unnamed group wants it reported as hate speech on one website. Everyone else seems to be having a lot of fun with it.

I assume by 'they' your referring to what... homosexuals, liberals, leftists?

Personally, I don't care.

Personally, I'd like to AD to stay, perhaps get more airtime.

Personally, I think its good that we can broadcast the bigotry or spitefulness of our political candidates so that in a few years when that inevitable regret emerges they can't deny knowing what they were getting into.

He's not the world's biggest bigot for supporting DADT... but it doesn't help his case.

He deserves mockery and hate. This is a campaign ad that blatantly features outright lies (US religious heritage, not being able to pray in schools, no Christmas for kids in school, and war on religion) to promote primitive bigoted beliefs. Agreeing with him reveals something about you - idiocy, bigotry, or ignorance. But probably all three.

You know, disliking what someone says and actively protesting it is not an attack on free speech.

When confronted with adversity, falling back on, "well I have the right to say it" is a complete strawman.

here it is

"Gay rights groups are asking people to report the video to YouTube for hate speech and a Change.org petition wants one million people to push the "dislike" button on the video by Friday night."

What a great way to shut down free and open debate on a highly controversial issue.

I did a Ctrl+F for "banned" on that link and it turned up nothing relevant.

So I'm guessing you're just trying to rumormonger that the evil gay lobby is trying to shut down poor Perry's right to free speech. Aw, boo hoo! Will the governor of Texas have a hard time getting his message out to the people if his video gets one million dislikes?

BRB pepper-spraying protesters.

I approve of the video being kept up. The more visable presidential idiocy, the happier Ajidica is.

I don't find it hateful because he's against DADT.

I find it hateful because of he way he says it in the ad. "... and gays can serve openly in the military" like that's some sort of a horrible thing.

Replace that with any other (legal) group of people and it's still hateful.. hateful no matter what and that's why it's getting all the negative attention.

Asking people to dislike a video is not curbing free speech. Are you saying nobody can express their dislike of something a politician says? I don't know what u-tube's policy is on hate speech but as conservatives like to say it is their site/property etc. they can do what they want. I want to be on NBC Nightly News to express my opinion, why do they suppress my free speech every single day? It must be because I'm an atheist. Such hateful people.

Anyway I wouldn't worry, this kind of controversy is just what Perry wants. Watch for a spike in his Iowa poll numbers. There is nothing conservatives like more than the fiction that they are a persecuted minority. The slightest criticism of their views gives them the vapors and sends them flocking to the polls to support the latest martyr to the cause of bigotry hate greed and selfishness. All while collecting their god given right to ethanol subsidies or in the case of libertarians shrimp subsidies.

I think the real issue here is that certain people want to infringe on Youtube's free speech, that it chooses to exercise by removing videos based on an automated process.

Exactly, the way he says it in the video is the problem. Along with blatant and extremely ignorant lies. There is no war on religion, children are allowed to pray in schools, they can celebrate christmas pretty much however they want, and none of it has anything to do with gays serving openly in the military. This seems to be the only thing you understand in this thread.. Perry and his PR crew really should have realized how badly presented it is before they even made it, the fact that they made it suggests they are either total idiots or intended to be "sneaky" with their views (and the two are not mutually exclusive).

Just because you are usually corrected, doesn't mean you have to run away.

Frankly I don't understand why there's such a fuss over it. We all knew Perry hated gays. We all know he opposed gays serving openly in the military. I mean, it's not like it's some big shock that he's come out and said it. 5 months ago, he would have been espousing a mainstream opinion; 5 years ago, it would have been a majority opinion. There are still plenty of bigoted people in America who believe that, and frankly I don't see why it's such a big shock that a religious American conservative would put up a video that bashes gays.

That being said, clicking the dislike button on YouTube is hardly an affront to free speech. I would tell you to grow up, but, judging from Perry's ad, I guess some people never will.
