PH02: Eight Angry Men

Well, if you go lazy and pair them up (as in group them), you waste the worker turn alright, as the group would not move if at least one of them does not have any movement points left.

Anyway, enough about that.

I don't see why we want to take Monty now ... IMHO, its better to finish Khan (no more return to homeland penalty), assimilate his cities and build up a little before taking on Monty ... that is assuming Monty hasn't declared on us by then.

Which should serve as reminder for us that if w echoose to finish off Mongolia first, we must still maintain adequate defense up north.

For the next couple of turnsets, we won't be able to take on anyone, I think. We need to get our economy going before anything else. Cottages around Karakorum, beaurocracy and palace in Sparta. I can't see us doing a successful attack on either Monty nor Genghis with anything lighter than maces.

Now THAT sounds like a plan. Sign me up.

Inherited Turn (1160 AD)
Well, it looks like we are building infrastructure everywhere. Monty has a nice stack in Dusseldorf; I'll try to sneak in a few troops here and there just in case.

Turn 1 (1166 AD)
Herodotus reports that we are no longer the least advanced civ! Hooray! :P

Turn 2 (1172 AD)
Monty demands Drama. Why bother. He'll probably attack us eventually anyway.
Harappan finishes: Granary --> Phalanx (5)

Turn 3 (1178 AD)
Sparta finishes: Buddhist Temple --> Aqueduct (16)
Sending a Sword and Phalanx to checkout the Barb city to the NW.

Turn 4 (1184 AD)
Monty got a Great Scientist last turn and begins a Golden Age.

Turn 5 (1190 AD)
Napoleon sends an envoy:

What is it with you people? As soon as we discover some novel technology, you all come calling with your hands out! Come back when you have something to offer, you impertinent midget!
Athens finishes: Buddhist Monastery --> War Elephant (7)

Our 'Party of Discovery' encountered a Barb Archer last turn who ran away. He didn't run far enough:
Phalanx defeats (4.35/5): Barbarian Archer

Turn 6 (1196 AD)
Karakorum finishes: Buddhist Temple -->
Corinth finishes: Theatre --> Lighthouse (30)

Turn 7 (1202 AD)
Harappan finishes: Phalanx --> War Elephant (9)

Turn 8 (1208 AD)
Technology discovered: Feudalism --> Civil Service (13)
Thermopylae finishes: Courthouse --> Longbowman (7)

We reach Uzbek, the Barbarian city in the NW. Two archers are defending.
Swordsman defeats (5.22/6): Barbarian Archer

IBT: We hear the distant sounds of trumpets from the Acropolis, and are visited by this happy couple:

Great. This should be fun...

Turn 9 (1214 AD)
Trade Qin: Sheep for Fur

At Uzbek:
Swordsman defeats (4.44/6): Barbarian Archer
Captured Uzbek (Barbarian)
Razed Uzbek A few more coppers into the treasury, anyway.

Monty's Glorious Stack of Doom advances from Dusseldorf.

Turn 10 (1220 AD)
Monty's GSoD (TM) veers E, away from Thermopylae. Perhaps he wants Athens? An Aztec Galley with 2 Catapults also appears headed for Harappan.

Genghis sends a lone Catapult toward Karakoram, probably to pillage our Elephants. I put a Horse Archer in the queue in Karakoram to deal with it. We could whip it at the cost of 3 pop. I recommend doing it, but I'll let the next player make the decision. (We could also whip a War Elephant for 4 pop, but an HA should be sufficient.)

Here's Monty's GSoD and our troops near Thermopylae:

Our small stack N of the city still has movement points, so we could move them inside the city to make a dash to cover Athens.

Athens currently has an Archer (our faithful Achilles) and an Axeman defending, but will produce a War Elephant next turn.

We also a War Elephant in production in Harapan which we could whip for 2 pop. to deal with Monty's Cats. en route via Galley. (If we don't whip the HA/WE to defend our Elephants at Karakoram, be sure to whip Harapan before they get pillaged.)

I also queued up a Longbowman in Sparta, as we only have a couple of Phalanx there.

Oh yes! Our Swordsman/Phalanx pair that razed Uzebek is healing up in the NW. I suspect they should be sufficient to capture Khan's city New Sarai that he planted to the NW of Karakoram.

You're up Frank! Good luck!

wow, both of those clowns; which one is the girl in the relationship?? Monty i think...i guess taht was exactly 10 turns since i made peace, too, eh? I would definitely move that small stack into the city since Monty may veer left again anyway and an attack on the Phant and the Jag would end that threat pretty quickly. It seems like monty has an abundance of cats, and no axes...perhaps he has no metals??

Monty has Iron for sure. He also has Civil Service, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some Maces show up soon.

As far as I can tell, he doesn't have Ivory, so he must be trading with someone for the Elephants.

After further consideration, I think Thermopylae is his target. He probably veered SE to stay in the trees for a extra turn. We'll find out for sure next turn.

Oh, you mean that Iron resource right next to dusseldorf really is iron? my fault ~

that's what i was thinking...to cross that river there and land on the farm/road tile for pillaging is my guess. hopefully, though, if he does that, we'll own him right there.

I know frank's got it, but here's a roster since i haven't need to post one for a bit ~

Frank > UP and he's got it
Pholk > on deck
Munter >
Lobster > just played

Fox > OoP

@ Frank ~ i'm tingling w/anticipation

@ Munter/Fox ~ Yeah, to see someone FIGHT 8 angry men, go find PH01: Rise of the Queen Mother

To sum up my 10 turns, we razed Khan's New Sari, withstood two minor Mongolian incursions, held off an assault by 2 galley-born Aztec catapults at Harrapan (losing a War Elephant), and killed numerous Aztec units around Thermopylae, losing just 2 units of our own. Oh, and on my final turn, Bismark declared war on us. (gulp)

Meanwhile, back north, I had started an expeditionary force headed into Aztec country with the intent of pillaging Monty's iron mine. But an even more impressive stack of doom appears and those plans go up in smoke. I start a tactical withdrawal.
Spoiler :
angry10.jpg

That solitary Maceman at the bottom of the picture has been razing farms outside our fat cross at Thermopylae (former German lands). I've got him covered with a fortified Phalanx and two horse archers outside the view. He's the only maceman to appear thus far.

Harappan finishes: Horse Archer

Turn 10 (1280 AD)
Research begun: Machinery
Harappan begins: Axeman
Horse Archer promoted: Combat I

No German troops have been spotted yet. Good luck, team!-

****, that could be trouble. Lots of War elephants and HA comming our way. That bodes well for excessive us of our UU the Phalanx and our own War elephants. Also, consider researching philosophy or Music next, since we can trade that to JC. It would really help to bring him into the war.

phew!! 3 on 1 ~ nice!! way to go Frank  you didn't insult his mother did you??

This makes me up, too.

Frank, do you remember how many turns until Machinery comes in. the maces and xbows would certainly be nice, but getting an ally would be nice, too.

I'm thinking trying to do something decisive on the Mongolian front and end that war quickly, and maybe stay on defense on the Aztec and soon-to-be German front.

Insulting is just part of my foreplay. ::snarf::

Machinery is a long ways off but we have no beakers invested in it yet. I had shut down research to upgrade an archer to longbowman (who died the next turn) and then cranked it back up to get Civil Service. I think we can run at around 50% research right now and keep even, but I'd been running it binary.

If I recall, Music is about 10 turns to go.

frankcor said:

Frankie and Bismarck sitting in a tree . . . ;)

Okay, i'll swap to Music and see if we can't find some friends with our cool melodies.

Someone must have bought Bismarck to war ... he is only cautious when he declared. SO we are fighting two angry men and a not-so-angry man.

:goodjob: fending off the Aztecs, me also think we need to finish off Mongolia quickly, and then force Aztec to concede defeat. As for Bismarck .... any possibility of getting us that Buddhist Shrine we craved so much ~ like 3000 years ago?

That would be a catch. How about staying on the defensive in the west. Ghengis can't have many forces with his few cities. Instead we build mass catapults and War elephants and try for a couple of german cities before making peace with Bismarck. It could work, but I bet Otto has a lot of troops in his lands.
