PH02: Eight Angry Men

LOL, Pholkhero. And yes, I'm what they call in the old country "stunod" or hard-headed. Mostly I base that decision on the relative score of us, the demander and the one he or she hates. In this case, Toku is higher than us while is Nappy lower than us. The Frenchman can pound salt.

Hey, what happened to the old Chinese dude? This new avatar is kinda freakin' me out, man.

Ahh, a paison (sp?) ~ bah fangul (horribly misspelt, i know)

The old avatar wasn't a Chinese guy. That was Riley Martin, a sharecroppers son from Mississippi. He hosts a radio show on Sirius 101. Follow the link in my signature to his website (Quai unsa . . .). The Alien pictured there is Tan, the one who is "coming" (not a dirty joke, check the site). His show is one of the best pieces of comedy around right now, though i'm not sure he knows it.

T01/1523:
This was the inherited turn, but since we're at an odd number, i'm only going to play 9 to even us up. I also notice that Sparta will need a few more farms if we want to mine all those hills, which, given that we're going to put the capital there adn run Bureaucracy we should mine them all and work them. Who knows that we won't Pop Another One!

T02/1526:
Athens: Mace > Theatre; Sparta: Mace > Palace

T03/1529:
Beshbalik: Market > Courthouse; Also, check this out:
hamburgrevoltey7.jpg

we can't lose it, but this is annoying, no?

t04/1532:
JC completes Ankor Wat; I sent 2 more units over to Hamburg, and i think that any more units that are done should be sent over there. I also stick a Courthouse in the queue @ Karakorum. The economic and infrastructure situation in Greece is pretty desparate. We really need to grow our cities!!

t05/1235:
REVOLUTION!!
revolutionvp8.jpg

I revolted b/c i don't think we should wait the 20 turns (at least) to get theology.

And the war begins with Mongolia. Here's our Army of Eastern Mongolia:
armyofeasternmongoliapo9.jpg

IT: We lose a phalanx that was going to pillage the horse near Tabriz.

t06/1538:
Napoleon shows up, hung over, half asleep and angry:
nappycanceltx4.jpg

t07 - t08:
We approach Turfan, and commence bombarding the defenses there.

Oh yeah, this asshat shows up:
bizgolddemandoj8.jpg

Oh and good news at Hamburg!
hamburgborderpopuw2.jpg

That's AFTER the border pop!!

t09/1547:
Athens: theatre > longbow; Therm: Heroic Epic > xbow; Harappan: Knight > Cthse; the two bows being constructed were built w/the thought that Hamburg will need them for defense once the war starts up again.

I bombard Turfan with one more cat to take the city to 3% def and send in the clowns...er troops. Our Com II Knight takes out the lead longbow, a CR III Mace goes in next and wins. And elephant and the other knight clean up the remaining axe and cat respectively and . . .
turfanourspt1.jpg

t10/1550:
I send the healthy units on to Old Sarai.
oldsaraibm4.jpg

and there's only 2 longbows there. What we need on this front is a Medic!

And that's that. I think we need to finish up this war and move on. I meant to take a pic of our tech situation but we are W A Y behind. We need to be real smart with our research at this point and head for that which the AI avoids. The war with Mongolia is pretty much won at this point. The pain will be the mop-up, but it won't be too bad. I think, too, we should keep all the cities, despite our economic situation. It'll even up in the end.

Also, i was thinking, too, that we should start sending out Buddhist missionaries to every city we can!

Roothter:

Pholk > just played
Fox > UP NOW
Munter > on deck

Do we really want to keep that Iceball? It looks crappy to me. You're right about research, and good call on giving in to Otto.

you can't see it from there, but there's a fish in the water, and marble south of the city. It won't be much, but it'll be a nice little fishing village, with the ocean for commerce and the marble for shields to build a lighthouse, granary, etc.

Okay, I'll give it ago when I get home drunk tonight.

nice, drunken civ. can't wait for the inevitible: "Declare war on me will you!" followed by a pic of munter's foot in his monitor

turn 0
As we expected, Ghengis won't (hic!) prove much of a challenge.

You all know I love you, right? You can count on me to do everything (hic!) I can in every SG, you know. Trust me. You trust me right? (hic!)

Old Sarai is going down!
Sarai.jpg

I'd love some wine!

turn 1

Here's a guy I like. He doesn't even hold a grudge for us taking his holy city. Open borders won't hurt right?
niceOtto.jpg

There's a pretty wild party going on in Hamburg. I wanna join! (hic!)
revolt.jpg

Nasty fellow, trying to make trouble. I'll get you good!

turn 2
Here's our glorious party empire

turn 3
Engineering is done, I start paper bacause trading our map for cash would be nice, and it leads to a very science oriented branch of the tech tree. I think we need printing press and education sooner rather than later.

turn 4
Tokugawa want's us to declare war against Germany. Interesting, but I refuse, since we are not ready yet.
toku2.jpg

Another thing to note is that he has 930 gold in the bank, but lacks guilds. I check what he's willing to part with if we teach him how to build knights. He only offer 370 gold, so no deal, but I'll think about it.

turn 5
Time to take down Beshablik.

After sending in some cats, we got the city easily. Move on towards the remaining two cities of Ghengis Khan.

Napoleon want's gold, and I give in

turn 6: Hamburg revolts again!
revoltIGJEN.jpg

turn 8
Tabriz falls
tabriz.jpg

turn 10
There are some knights over at the last Mongol city. Next player choose if he wants to attack rigth away, or wait for the city radiers.

Good turns, Munter ~ have a headache?? I thikn Paper (and that whole branch of the tree) will be good to head towards. With our opponents, i wonder how many will prioritize liberalism ~ that may be a good thing to get us back in the tech game a bit.

It would be nice to split the war against Germany with Japan and slow them both down a bit. I'm still all for taking an Aztec city or three to secure our northern border better.

Fox is up now so let's see what he finds wrong with what we did ;)

perhaps we can bribe the ol'Aztec to get involved in a war with Biz perhaps.

Also, again, can we spam some Buddhist monks to send off into the world to meditate under various opponents' trees.

Monty does have a lot of units, and Toku and Biz is at war. The first one is bad, the other one good. If we could get caesar in war with monty or something, we would have gotten a steal.
A question. Are we sure that Hamburg won't flip?

Hamburg has revolted 3-4 times, at least, since we captured it, so, no, it won't flip. (I guess that it's in the rules somewhere that captured cities won't flip back to the civ from which they were captured.) Biz is going to have to come and take it if he wants it back!

I'm 99.9% sure it won't flip. Remember, there's an option to turn ON to "Allow Flip after Conquest" ~ we may have to put up revolts every 5 turns, but we won't lose it. Hopefully, too, more units would prevent that.

If we can get JC to jump on Monty, I'd feel a lot safer going after Biz first. The way things are, though, we may have to make plans for a 2-front war no matter what!

Okay, turns played. The Mongolian war takes me longer than expected, but that is, fortunately, by my choice and not forced by circumstances.

But before I go into all that, I seems to slowly gain the unintended reputation of finding wrongs with the inherited turnset ... I hope people don't view it a smugness or what  just hope to improve each other's play and thus, next player should do the same to me ...

okay here you go:

What is Wrong

ph02-AD1580-smoke.jpg

WTH is the worker doing in the forest? We can't build lumbermill yet, and definitely we aren't going to chop that forest (its tundra, with forest at least it produce decent hammer). SO I really don't know how it ended up there.

Another thing is, from the screenshot you should see that the forest is being worked on. We should work on the marble instead of the forest, since we have to wait 14 turns for the culture border to pop, working on the marble would cause the work boat to complete roughly the same time as the border pop.

Lats thing is: why accumulate so much gold? It is simply inviting others to come extort us ... I immediately set research to spend all the gold away, which I can't, so I upgraded an archer to longbowman as well.

The Holy City

Do buddhist monks fast? The game seems to tell me so ... it reminds me of the Chinese Kongfu movies where the Shaolin Monastery is under siege ...

ph02-AD1586-holy-city.jpg

As you can see we lost the corn and the windmill, thus the holy city is staring very quickly. To resolve this, I need to whip. Thus a revolution is necessary ...

ph02-AD1586-revolt.jpg

Since we are going for one, might as well revolt to OR as well. This will give us 2 turns of anarchy, which save the holy city from starvation for 2 more turns as well. :)

After the anarchy, the holy city was whipped. May the Buddha bless us!

ph02-AD1592-whip-holy-city.jpg

But, it is still starving ... another whip is needed:

ph02-AD1601-holy-whip.jpg

As Buddha says:"If not me, then who shall go to hell?"

And finally, the city stagnant at size 1.
