PH02: Eight Angry Men

Here's a roster, but it doesn't look like you've played for awhile, munter...or did you swap with Fox last go round

either way, if you can play tonight, that'd be good b/c Pholkpipe is up in that Noble game.

Frank > just played
Pholk > UP NOW
Fox > on deck
Munter >
Lobster >

frankor - try *uploading* the save to the civfanatics file server (link at bottom of forum pages, 5Mb size limit, both zips and civ4 saves okay), instead of *attaching* the save to the post (500kb limit)

Great going Frank! You reports are always worth the wait!

Hamburg's situation is really starting to annoy me!!

Ok, I can play. Which one do you want Pholkpipe do and which should Munterhero go for?
Let's let Pholkpipe take Japan's game, and Munterhero take this one (and I'll go after you)

I think I see what's happened. Ultrashare has renamed the file. The file size is correct, at least. Munterpipe, please try renaming the file to PH02_AD-1670.Civ4SavedGame and try loading it?

:::THWAPPP!!!::: (sound of palm hitting forehead) Thanks, WillowBrook! I never would have found that on my own.

If renaming the file doesn't work, I'll upload it here this evening when I get home.

Thanks! That's quite a compliment coming from you. If I can't play well, I should at least try to write it well.

Hey, at least Hamburg isn't rioting and has 3 whole tiles to work now. I switched to maximizing food, figuring if it can grow to population two, the odds that it will riot again should disappear with smaller garrison there.

The save workes, Frank. Thanks.
Let's see.
0:
Monty has lost his wazzoo over at Harappan. He can't possibly take that city.
Offensivly, we are still allright. We've got one stack moving towards Otto's northern city and one down at Stuttgard. Crappy city, certainly, but good enough for us.
 unmoved units?
:mischief: I immediately call the attack.
Civ4ScreenShot0112.jpg

One mace dies at 68% but from there, our other three maces have no trouble.
Civ4ScreenShot0115.jpg

Stuttgard is captured, and a lighthouse is preserved inside. Good.
We are making 40 gpt at 0% now. Overall I'm quite happy with my turns. Next player can make sure we capture those two northern German cities.
Wait. What was that? I haven't even started my turns?

This is taking it's time, and I need to go to work. I'll finish up tomorrow, if that's all right.
There's been a lot of things going on.
Ten Prank points to anyone who can guess how many city captures there has been this turnset.

Looks like you've had an encounter with Frank's PUS (Patented Unfinished Set) :) it's been awhile, though, since Frank's done it.

can't wait to see what else happens/ed ~

Check out the religous affiliations - 6 out of 7 religions (all but Judaism) were founded by different Civs! (Poor Bismarck!) For an SG entitled 'Eight Angry Men' you hardly could have planned it better!

Shesh, i've read the entire thread and im deeply impressed - very impressive warmongering you've done. But frankly, I just dont know how you're going to pull this off with your economic problem
BTW how many phalanxes do you have?? theý're absolete since Engeneering but you still have some left

Wait till you see the next ten turns Sprite;)
During this thread, I've discovered the power of the Phalanx. As long as there's Knights left, they are not obsolete. No use in upgrading them to pikes, 'cause they are alomst as good.
Phalanx is 52 hammers. 5str 100% against mounted AND 25% on hills.
Pikeman is 100 hammers 6str 100% against mounted.
I would take two phalanxes over a pike every time. Too bad we can't build them any more;)

I could finish the game and the report now, but that would be another tuurn of drunken civving that I don't hink we can afford on emperor.
(hic!)

Well, based on the 1-line:1-typo ratio you exhibited above, I'd say you made the right decision. Have a blast! Oh, and put me down for 2 cities in the Prank Point Lottery (PPL).

Phalanxes rock! I mean, as a defensive UU, their usefulness lasts for ages. They absolutely chew through War Elephants on offense, and stop Knights dead when fortified on defense.

@Pholkhero: I think I pulled a PUS this time because I wore myself out. 10-turns in this war is an epic task. I got scolded for a PUS in another SG a while ago and I've been avoiding it for sure. But look for a treat next time I spot you following me in a roster ;).

Ok still on turn zero.
I change the knight being built in sparta to a grocer. It's our money city, and will also benifit from improved health.

At Hamburg, a grennie is annoying, but I kill it, losing a knight:mad:
On the plus side, the Knight who did the finishing blow is almost due a pinch promotion which will come in handy.

1: Berlin has fallen to the Japs!
Berlinhasfallen.jpg

2: The attack of Cologne.
I want to end our war with Otto, BEFORE Japan is done with him, so that we can sue for peace and hopefulle get a tech. We've gotta be quick though. Japan is moving fast.

AttackonCologne.jpg

AttackonCologne2.jpg

AttackonCologne3.jpg

Lost a mace, but Cologne is ours!
Colognehasfallen.jpg

Dortmund could be ours as well in a couple of turns, but the problem is that Monty's huge millitary could mount an attack on Dortmund, so I guess I'll be a bit more patient in taking that city.

3: A lucky iron source popped in our production centre!
Poppediron.jpg

Look at the swines cooperating.

4: DOH!
Foolish :smoke: ***********
LoseStuttgart.jpg

Lose Stutgard to a stupid ass German knight. Where did he come from?
I remember when I decided that one longbow would be enough to hold that city for now. One longbow is never enough! Bah, I'll take it back in a few!

I clear out the pestering enemies in our land, but suffer some losses.

5: The japs have taken Essen.
Essenhasbeencaptured.jpg

Some more fighting in our backyard.
Take back Stutgard with a WE

The battle of Dortmund commenses.
Suicide a cat, but it doesn't scratch the first defender.
Yet another of the same. That first defender has got Garrison 3!
A Third Cat dies without scratching it.
Aoch. Lose a mace without scratching it !
Another mace goes in. Our supermace in fact. with combat 2 and CR 3.
He loses, but finally wounds the LB significally.

Next mace kill the LB and our last mace kills another.
Next turn the city will be taken, and with defensive units ready to move in as well.

6: Dortmund falls easily, without any losses for us. I move in all available troops to make sure it stays Greek.
CapturedDortmund.jpg

7: Damn! Lose two phalanxes agains a single War Elephant. Both had odds over 80% Take out the WE with a mace eventually, but that WAS irritating.

Otto von Bismarck has only one city left, Munich.
defensesatMunich.jpg

That will truly be a very difficult city to take. It's got a better defense than anything we have met so far, AND it's on a hill.
Otto can offer us the rest of Education for peace, (about 600 beakers,) but nothing more.

Check out those Japanese troops. If they come after us, we could be in big trouble.
JapanForces.jpg

About victory conditions, does anone have any thoughts on that?
Victoryconditions.jpg

Culture, Space race and Time are clearly out. UN probably as well, allthough we have the largest population. That leaves domination and Conquest.

Anyway, since taking Munich will be too much of a strain for our spread-out wounded millitary, I make peace with the German, and get education and his world map. I then sell the world map to Toku and Julius for 150 gold each, and end up with about 1100 gold in the bank. Wohoo!

That means we can go 100% for five turns. I set research for Gunpowder, which leads to steel and chemistry. As far as I see it, we should start building up a LOT of cannons and grenadiers and do Monty as soon as possible, while keeping our eastern borders at bay from any possible Japanese aggression.

8: Monty suicides a War Elephant against the walls of Dortmund.
And a great Scientist has been born in Athens! I let him sleep in Athens for now. He can lightbulb us 2700 beakers towards printing press, OR we can save him for a golden age. I propose the last. We have a large empire now, and should build a great army when we get to cannons and grenadiers, so a golden age would suit us nicely in our millitary buildup.
Remember, the Scientist rests in Athens.

Now check out this phalanx.
Phalanxesrock.jpg

If fortified on a hill and attacked by Cavalry it get's:

+50% since it's on a hill
+125% against mounted
+25% fortify bonus
+20% strenght bonus.

That's 220% giving a total str 16 (!)against the cavalry's 15. Hah, UU don't come much better than that. A Phalnanx can almost take out a Cossack! :crazyeye:

9: While I preach about the power of the Phalanx, an Aztec catapult sneak past our defences and steal a worker:mad: We can't afford that kind of unattentiveness.
I kill three Aztec units outside Dortmund and see if Monty is willing to talk.
Montydeal.jpg

He offers this deal, and I take it. Surprising actually since we haven't even entered his lands during this war. Perhaps we can get something from Napoleon as well later.

I also trade marble for Monty's 8 gold per turn.

10: That's it. Gunpowder done in two turns. Then we should start some muskets at least for defense. You never know who will come knocking. Mao sure has a lot of advanced units close to our borders, so watch out for him as well.
Chineesethreat.jpg

Grenadiers will be great for us, since they get a bonus against riflemen. There are many riflemen about. Let's just hope we don't meet infantry in our next war.

hey well, you know i don't give a ****, so I'll look forward to following you :D

Good turns, MulkPiro. I've got the save, and will play later today. I'll continue w/the Gren>Canons idea, and perhaps we can focus on more canons than anything for some Collateral Carnage (TM).

I agree that most other victories are out, and we've almost got 1/2 the land requirement for Dom already. The real challenge will be to take the other 30% from someone (Monty's land goes with out saying, though)
