PH02: Eight Angry Men

So, as I mentioned, I mostly focused on military builds (85% riflemen, some canon, some grens), science and $$ bldgs where needed. I figure we need all the boosts we can get to catch up!

Techwise I finished up Rifiling, went Sci Method > Economics > and i just started on Nat'lism on the way to Corporation and Assembly Line :)

As I said, in 1851, Greece entered a Golden Age:
1851goldenagenp0.jpg

We partied like it was 1899! [party]

Here's a shot of our Financial Portfolio
Spoiler :
1851financialadvisorqj6.jpg

And then, several years later, i found this gentlemen sleeping the days away!
1855greatmerchua8.jpg

I also removed the signs for aesthetic reasons at some point.

And lookie what else i spied that turn:
1855munichfl9.jpg

That's the army in Munich. My guess is that it may be what's left of the Japanese army after the war.

1859: Sci Method came in, and we have no less than 6 coal in our lands. Here's one:
1859coaloj2.jpg

Figures, right? Can we still build Ironworks here and get the bonus??

1860:
1860forbiddencm6.jpg

okay, here is a shot of Magna Graecia:
1860greatergreeceyb2.jpg

And, noticing that we're already at 40% of the 60 needed for Domination, i figure, how else are we going to win?? So, propose this:
Spoiler Operation: C*ck and Balls (rhymes with "Shock and Awe") :
1860staffplanajq0.jpg

Taking out Japan will put us into the mid-50s methinks, AND it eliminates a major threat. We all know he's an angry man and an evil dictator? The people will shower us with flowers and . . . nevermind :crazyeye: we should raze Orleans (for multiple reasons )

Nevertheless, i stand by the plan. Our army merely needs a bit of organization in the East and focused builds, but we're maybe a turnset from being ready to attack. Eh, eh, eh??

The Save, yo!

Played 6 turns ... will finish the remaining 4 tonight. Need to go out and have a life first

First of all, the usual inspection of the cities ... one must always do that when you are after Pholk ;)

First the trade

tempting as it might, don't cancel the gold trade to toku for more gold. Why? Becasue he has just popped a gold in his mine.

ph02-AD1860-osaka-gold.jpg

Instead, I upped wheat deal from 8 to 10gpt. ALso upped gold trade to JC from 7 to 8gpt as well.

Now cities:

Why is Texcoco set to stagnant with one free engineer and one artist? Let it grow!!!

ph02-AD1860-Texcoco.jpg

And then Calix-whaever ...

ph02-AD1860-Calixhua.jpg

Huh? Not every city can use the merchant trick ... look, merchant gives 3 gold. Working on a fully developed town gives 7 gold + 2 food. We already have a GP farm.

Various minor tweaks around the cities (one must always check the cities when in Mercantilism, the AI like to default to Engineer, which is not a good idea in most cities), moving forces eastwards ... etc etc.

Thanks to Mao, we can move pretty fast:

ph02-AD1862-rail.jpg

And then, press enter already.

*** PA-PA-PA-PA ****

 the dreaded trumpet sounded ... let's see who is the lucky victim. With luck, it will be Toku or Mao declaring on Nappy, ha! That will make my day.

And then, this appears:

ph02-AD1861-Toku-war.jpg

Gessh ... my painstakingly, skillfully, brillinatly manouvered trading deals go to waste. :aargh:

Let's see what toku brings:

ph02-AD1861-toku-forces.jpg

Ok, that's moderately respectable. But, the major stack went back into his own border the next turn ... ha, chicken!

And the remaining two pairs were dealt with soon enough ... with losses of-course. One don't go up against SAM-Inf and Artillery with Grenies, Rifles and Cannons and expect no losses.

ph02-AD1862-attack.jpg

1862:
While attacking, Cannon loses to Japanese SAM Infantry (18.00/18)
Grenadier promoted to Pinch
While attacking, Cannon loses to Japanese SAM Infantry (12.60/18)
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (2.40/12) Japanese SAM Infantry
While attacking, Grenadier loses to Japanese SAM Infantry (8.28/18)
Grenadier promoted to Pinch
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (3.36/12) Japanese SAM Infantry
Grenadier promoted to Combat II
While attacking, Grenadier loses to Japanese Artillery (11.88/18)
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (6.02/14) Japanese Artillery

1864:
While attacking, Cannon loses to Japanese Grenadier (5.88/12)
Rifleman promoted to Combat II
While attacking, Rifleman loses to Japanese Artillery (16.56/18)
While attacking, Grenadier loses to Japanese Artillery (10.80/18)
While attacking, Cannon loses to Japanese Artillery (10.80/18)
While attacking, Knight loses to Japanese Artillery (2.16/18)
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (11.62/14) Japanese Grenadier
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (7.68/12) Japanese Artillery

The two pairs of invaders are gone, by 1864.

Now, this is fun. :D

--

Even more fun, is I am about to teach Toku a lesson in defence. (Mark my words).

3 riffleman defending a city? Ha, arrogant bastard. But before that, there's another matter that needs to be settled. You see, somehow, Toku's declaration on us must have increased his relationship with Nappy, and Toku I think opened border to him. I spotted 2 cavalries and a small stack of Grenies and cannons heading our way.

We don't need such nuisance to divert our attention. Thus:

ph02-AD1864-nappy-peace.jpg

I believe he will redeclare 10 turns later ... but that's no longer my problem :D

With Nappy's forces rendered neutral in this war, the attack of Essen begins!

ph02-AD1864-atk-essen-1.jpg

He retreated. Good Cannon!

Next, the grenies will have a field day now ...

ph02-AD1864-atk-essen-2.jpg

Cannon promoted to City Raider I
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (9.96/12) Japanese Rifleman
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (5.88/12) Japanese Rifleman
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (11.20/14) Japanese Rifleman
Buddhism spreads to Essen (Japanese Empire)
Buddhism spreads to Essen
Confucianism spreads to Essen
Captured Essen (Tokugawa)

ph02-AD1864-atk-essen-3.jpg

This is FUN! Absolutely. :D

--

--

Two turns later, this is no longer fun.

ph02-AD1866-dead-city.jpg

One dead city.

Dead.

Kudos to toku, now he teaches me a lesson in city defence. :crazyeye:

Extreme time require extreme measures. A massive whip is ordered throughout the Greek Empire. SHould have revolted to Nationhood 2 turns earlier when Nationhood came in, but I was reluctant to lose the 2 gold per town benefit. Now I regreted it. Its too late to go into Nationhood now. Guess I have to swallow this. Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you.

Oh, by the way, I vetoed Constitution ... appreciate your suggestion in me learning Constitution, but I think Military Trad is the way to go for now. We need some Cavalry to counter the arties.

To be continued.

I have 4 more turns.

But I needed some fresh air, and a beer or two, and a slip back into real-life for a few hours or so.

--

If you think that is exciting ... I haven't mentioned that there is a second transport with more troops ...

ph02-AD1867-sturgart.jpg

Geez ... and he razed Sturgart!! :gripe: Denying me a chance of taking back that German city!

Here are the glorious dead ...

While defending, Longbowman loses to Japanese Artillery (4.50/18)
While defending, War Elephant loses to Japanese Cannon (9.96/12)
While defending, Phalanx loses to Japanese Cannon (8.16/12)
Buddhism spreads to Stuttgart
Stuttgart lost

Nevermind ... why?

Because ...

ITS MY TURN AGAIN! :hammer:

ph02-AD1867-berlin.jpg

While attacking, Cannon loses to Japanese Rifleman (10.36/14)
While attacking, Cannon loses to Japanese Rifleman (8.26/14)
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (2.24/14) Japanese Rifleman
Rifleman promoted to Pinch
While attacking, Rifleman loses to Japanese Rifleman (1.82/14)
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (8.68/14) Japanese Artillery
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (0.96/12) Japanese SAM Infantry
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (14.00/14) Japanese Rifleman
Buddhism spreads to Berlin (Japanese Empire)
Hinduism spreads to Berlin
Buddhism spreads to Berlin
Confucianism spreads to Berlin
Captured Berlin (Tokugawa)

ph02-AD1867-berlin-captured.jpg

More skimishes follows, I have waste a few grenies and rifles to take out two artilleries.

Situation of Berlin at 1869AD:

ph02-AD1869-Berlin.jpg

See that stack there? I decided to eliminate it ... after a fierce battle with heavy loses, objective accomplished. Situation at Berlin at 1870AD:

ph02-AD1870-Berlin.jpg

Situation of the south at 1869AD:

ph02-AD1869-southern.jpg

As you can see, toku's stack diminished a bit ... dur to him insisting on attacking my troops in the forest and across river, also due to my guerrela strike of his exposed alone unit.

Then, I decided to clean his invasion forces up, and here is the situation at 1870AD:

ph02-AD1870-southern.jpg

We also have some forces at Munich bombarding the defences to 0. Do wait for more reinforcement though if you plan on keeping it ... you will never be able to hold the city with that forces.

ph02-AD1870-munich.jpg

You should notice that we are in anarchy. Sorry I gave you 2 turns of anarchy to inherit, but Nappy beg and beg and beg, and I obliged just to shut his nagging up :D

ph02-AD1870-representation.jpg

Yes, with Pyramids in Berlin, we can (and should) revolt to representation. This combined with Mercantilism is worth a lot, a lot of beakers.

However, I still think Nappy will attack once peace treaty is UP. SO be careful there. Monty is surprisingly behaving himself so far ... if I had known, I would have pulled more troops from Texcoco, instead of whipping so much.

ANyway, I think I have buy us a breathing period ... Toku seems to be out of steam, so I suggest complete Military Trad and start building some cavalries. Thereafter, we should take corporation and AssLine, or railraod for production/movement bonus as well better city defender (machine gun).

>>> The Save (1870AD) <<<

first things first, i rarely touch city speciliasts. a failing of mine, yes, but anything to escape the wrath of the Fox

GREAT action!! Almost like an all-war game :mischief:

I think I had set those specialists in Texacoco but that was before that rice field was within it's cultural borders. But I remember building a culture building in GreyFoxTown to fix that problem. Brilliant move on my part, if I do say so myself. But sometimes when you set specialists, the governor doesn't adjust when better tiles come available.

It's pretty hard to blame PholkHero for that. But I still do --- har har har!

GreyFox said:
Hey, I am not blaming anyone ... don't get too serious abt my gripe :D ... if I were to play after MY own turnset, I would have 20times more gripes I am sure ... since I totally ignore checking the city screens throughout the remaining of my turns :mischief:

LOL, the secret is out. And to think I needlessly took all those trips to the woodshed.

i don't mind, really. just reminds me of WHY exactly i can't make the jump to Emperor ~ i need to focus on my MMing.

What's teh mod that gives your reminders of pop growth, and happy limits??

GreyFox said:
CivAlerts. But I just use Ruff Hi's cobbed mode pack.

I use it too. Won't work with Warlords though :( .

Imhotep

Man! I go away for a few days, and all HELL breaks loose!

Good turns there GF!! I'll have to read the report a little more carefully before I play, but I should be able to do it tonight.

I guess this would help those of us who are lost Roster-wise (by which i mean me) ~

Lobster, any chance you can play before you're gone for the weekend?

Hello all. Sorry for the delay. I actually played my turns on Monday night, but couldn't post them yesterday (family emergency).

Inherited Turn (1870 AD)
Inherited two turns of Anarchy. Not much I can do until we come out of it. Nothing to do but hit >ENTER<

I am stunned how vulnerable some of our cities are.

IBT:
A Japanese SAM Infantry attacks our Grenadier outside of Essen:
Grenadier loses to: Japanese SAM Infantry (1.80/18)

Turn 1 (1871 AD)
In the South, clean up operations commence:
Cannon defeats (11.52/12): Japanese Catapult
Grenadier defeats (4.44/12): Japanese SAM Infantry
Only one Japanese unit - a fully healed, 4X promoted SAM Infantry - remains down South.

In the North, near Essen, we exact some revenge for the Grenadier that was lost in the IBT:
Rifleman defeats (14.00/14): Japanese SAM Infantry

IBT:
At Berlin:
Rifleman loses to: Japanese SAM Infantry (6.66/18)

Turn 2 (1872 AD)
Essen subdues the rebels and joins the Greek Empire; begins Theatre:whipped: for 3 pop.
Islam has spread: Dortmund

Period of Anarchy ends! Military Tradition in 2.

The pair of Japanese SAM Inf. outside of Berlin (one wounded, one at full strength) must die:
Cannon attacks Japanese SAM Infantry (7.9/18) and withdraws! The RNG is kind!
Grenadier defeats (6.72/12): Japanese SAM Infantry
Knight defeats (10.00/10): Japanese SAM Infantry Touche!

Trade Napoleon: Gold for 7 GP/turn. Hopefully, this will serve o rebuild our relationship some.

IBT: All quiet on the Eastern Front...

Turn 3 (1873 AD)
Thermopylae finishes: Rifleman --> Knight(2) I think he'll upgrade next turn.
Essen finishes: Theatre --> Library (12)
Hamburg grows: 8

I'm itching to take Munich but I'm not sure if we have enough to hold it.

Turn 4 (1874 AD)
Technology discovered: Military Tradition --> Constitution (5)
Calixtlahuaca finishes: Cannon --> Cavalry (14)
Essen's borders expand

IBT:Peace treaty with Napoleon expires.

Turn 5 (1875 AD)
Harappan finishes: Ironworks --> Cavalry
Karakorum finishes: Grenadier --> Cavalry
Dortmund finishes: Grenadier --> Cavalry
Berlin subdues the rebels and joins the Greek Empire; begins Theatre

IBT:
Japanese Destroyes sink a Caravel near Old Sarai, and Fishing nets are pillaged.

Napoleon visits us with a demand:

If it keeps you off of our backs for a few turns, fine.

Turn 6 (1876 AD)
Sparta finishes: Grenadier --> Rifleman
Thermopylae finishes: Cavalry --> Cavalry
Beshbalik finishes: Cannon --> Rifleman
Turfan finishes: Grenadier --> Cavalry
Texcoco grows: 3

The Japanese SAM Infantry I had ignored in the South is headed towards Sparta, no doubt on a pillaging run. He must be stopped:
Cannon loses to: Japanese SAM Infantry (9.90/18)
Grenadier loses to: Japanese SAM Infantry (9.90/18) Wow! Didn't even scratch him at >75% odds!
Rifleman defeats (8.68/14): Japanese SAM Infantry

IBT:Toku has Artillery now!
Mao completes Broadway, and comes with an offer:

Sure. Why not?

Turn 7 (1877 AD)
Toku reinforced Munich with an Artillery last turn, so I think that it's now or never to capture the city:
Cannon loses to: Japanese Rifleman (12.18/14)
Cannon loses to: Japanese Rifleman (10.22/14)
Cannon loses to: Japanese Rifleman (6.30/14)
Grenadier promoted: Pinch
Grenadier loses to: Japanese SAM Infantry (8.64/18)
Grenadier loses to: Japanese Rifleman (0.98/14)
Grenadier defeats (7.20/12): Japanese SAM Infantry
Grenadier defeats (12.00/12): Japanese Rifleman
Cavalry defeats (3.60/15): Japanese Artillery
Grenadier defeats (12.00/12): Japanese Rifleman

Captured Munich (Tokugawa)
Islam has spread: Frankfurt Our friend Julius is spamming us with Missionaries.

Turn 8 (1878 AD)
Technology discovered: Constitution --> Corporation (4)
Harappan completes: Cavalry --> Rifleman
Islam has spread: Frankfurt
One of the Grenadiers who was instrumental in the siege of Munich receives a Combat V promotion, and is renamed:

Turn 9 (1879 AD)
Thermopylae finishes: Cavalry --> Cavalry
Hamburg finishes: Cannon --> Cannon
GreyFoxTown finishes: Rifleman --> Rifleman
Albert Einstein (Great Scientist) born in Athens We could use him to lightbulb the rest of the way to Scientific Method, but no point rendering our Monasteries obsolete until we research Assembly Line. I put Al to sleep.

Turn 10 (1880 AD)
Athens finishes: Cannon --> Cavalry (18)
Frankfurt finishes: Grenadier --> Taoist Monastery (7)
Cologne finishes: Rifleman --> Cavalry (11)

Toku is ready to talk Peace:

I let whoever is next decide whether or not we should take the deal. Toku's offensive does appear to be spent indeed. Nevertheless, some of our cities in the Far West are virtually defenseless and could easily be captured with a few units. Watch out for a backdoor offensive from Toku's three city island off the West Coast.

Until that happens, though, my inclination is to send a few Cavalry scouts toward Toku's nearest city (Satsuma) to check out the defenses. If it's heavily fortified, perhaps we should take the deal. If not, I say press on, even in the face of Artillery. Below is a snapshot of our front lines:

NOTE: I was sure that I saved the game, but I can't find it! :crazyeye: The save below is from an autosave on turn 1878, so the next player gets to replay my last two turns. Sorry about that!
