Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
I loved the first of the series, to this day it is one of my favorite movies; it had superb acting, a great script with humor, great special effects, and action. It felt polished, and with the exception of a couple plot inconsistencies, was great. I gave it a 9.5 out of ten.
I thought the second was a lesson in mediocrity. The first quarter of the movie felt like a waste, the script was bland, Johnny Depp wasn't the amazing Jack Sparrow he was in the first, and the whole movie just didn't seen that well though out. Good special effects and action kept it from sinking, but that was about it. I gave it a 5.5 out of ten.
I went into Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End with a pessimistic mind set, but I have to say, the third movie of the series takes a little of the bad from 2, but luckily for us, much more of the good from 1. Certainly, there are some scenes that make you cringe a little (the marriage scene, for example), but as a whole, the script is much more polished. Johnny Depp is back and better than ever, and there is much more of him this time around (quite literally). The movie is longer than the previous two, but each scene seems to have significance (with a few minor exceptions). The humor is back and much more natural than the forced feeling lines in the second movie, and the characters feel fairly developed. Great special effects and an epic ending battle scene round out an enjoyable film that relies more on the interesting plot, characters, and acting than the special effects, much like the first movie, unlike the second. The story is much improved over the second, and the movie just feels like more of an effort, and less of a cash draw. No word yet on a fourth, but they certainly leave it open.
Pros
+ Great acting, possibly Depp's best yet.
+ Interesting and more complex plot.
+ Great action sequences and special effects.
Cons
- A couple minor cringe scenes.
- Keira Knightley feels a little flat compared to Depp and Geoffery Rush.
Overall: Well, they managed to nail 2 out of three in the series so far. Here's to hoping there's another on the way.
8.5 out of 10.
