I recently completed a project which took me hundreds of actual hours over the course of several months. It wasn't for work or school, mostly for my own personal interest. Have you ever undertaken or completed such a project? If so, what did you do? Did you share information about the status of your project as you progressed in it? How did you feel when you finished?

I've done several such ventures, mainly dealing with creative writings and other similar ideas.

It's a bit melancholy that I put so much time into something that the rest of the world may never see. At the same time, I enjoyed the time it took, so I guess I can't complain!

I am reading through your OP in that linked thread and I don't know whats going on. What were you trying to do? :)

I made a 30 day commitment to composing a piano piece a day. The result was, in my opinion, pretty good; but necessities and eventual lack of inspiration forced me to end up on 27 compositions. The whole "symphony", so to say, ended up lasting a good 40 minutes, and I'm really proud of it. It's actually on SoundCloud, although it's only autoplayed MIDI tracks there. There are no actual recordings right now.

My current long-term projects include two creative stories, as well as an ongoing CIVIII story (link in my signature). I've done some other short-term projects, like put on two spelling bees for the local homeschool community, and the satisfaction of completing those (as well as seeing our winner last year win at Regionals and go on to the National Bee) is always very rewarding.

Yep.

I'm currently helping on a mod for a sports game. A new mod comes out for each season, so it's actually a series of projects. I'm not the leader of the modders, but I have become a rather important part of the project. The mods generally take a few months each year to make, so I've put a decent amount of work into it.

I'm in the middle of creating a game that is a parody of Pokemon with two other friends. It's all coded from scratch though, and a large majority of the graphics are done by us, so yes, its it's taken hundreds of hours to do. It started out as a joke and then just became a fun little project for us. It's been mostly done for fun, and to further our knowlege making games.

Nah, the gameplay of our game is prefty much the same as the original Pokemon. We used some of the actual pokemon, and put faces on them of people we know. Hence, we're calling it Peoplemon. What's different is the maps, moves, items, storyline, etc. It's also got much more of a humorous feel.

I entered NaNoWriMo last year and, like every other year I entered, I fully intended to finish... and yet expected that I'd get maybe a paragraph into it and either get interrupted by RL or my inspiration would vanish - like every other year.

But this time was different. No, I didn't finish. But I kept on writing, even after the 30 days. Even now, I keep a notebook with me so I can do a couple of paragraphs while waiting for the bus and other times when some of the story pops and demands to be written. I WILL finish it. It won't be eligible for NaNoWriMo any more, but it's still a good story. So that's one project.

Another project is developing a forum for people who like to show off their Cheezburger activities, but who don't like some of the drama and nonsense that goes on at ICHC. It's a work in progress that's taking longer than expected... but I'd rather take longer and do it right the first time. After all, we know how frustrating it is when a quick rush job doesn't go right... right? ;)

I've undertaken several sustained projects. Some are ongoing, some I have completed.

1. My undergraduate thesis was the result of about fifteen months of work. I wrote three other article-length pieces in my undergrad, but they weren't very impressive and I don't like to talk about them.

2. I have written a set of advanced macroeconomics lecture notes, to the tune of about 150 pages. They'll be used to supplement our graduate macro course next year. They'll be finished in about a month, and will represent basically everything I know about macroeconomics. I'm more than a little proud of them.

3. I'm starting a new writing regimen this year, which should turn out fruitful. I'm allocating 80 blocks of time this semester to writing. They could be as short as 30 minutes or as long as 3 hours, but I am committed to writing for those intervals: five times per week, for sixteen weeks. I hope to complete one standard-length (40 paragraph) academic article in that time. Wash, rinse, repeat 3 times per year for the next four years.

Three projects per year. Some won't pan out, but I'm hoping that at least three of them will.

The result of the first such project is a little paper on oil and the macroeconomy.

I guess any mod falls into this category of projects.
So yeah, know that. Felt pretty awesome when it was released :D.
I did continually update the status, just for my own motivation. I actually never thought I'd finish, so I kept the progress in public, so that the fear of the shame if I aborted it would be too big :D :/.

I also thought about writing a book, but then again I'm not a good writer, and I don't think I have the motivation for that.
Making a computer game would be more interesting, but I seriously doubt I'll ever have the time and all the necessary skills.

I've never listed projects on a resume, but I save every one to file.

Wrote a 25 page 4-month long research paper on the Anglo-Saxons this past quarter. Maybe I'll post it here eventually. If I ever get off my ass and edit it a bit...

Made a civ 3 mod - took almost 3 years (but with large pauses).

Besides that i had some long social projects as well.
