Racism or just funny jokes? You decide

That's a pretty huge leap to make.

Is it? There's a poster of a guy in a turban. (Who looks remarkably like a Sikh, to me. So let's go with he's a Sikh.)

Casual graffittier #1 sees a guy in a turban, thinks: "He's a bomber!" Writes "bombs" on poster.

Casual graffittier #2 sees a guy in a turban, and graffitti "bombs", thinks: "Nah, not a bomber; plainly a taxi driver - I don't like Asians stealing our jerbs. What a wit I am!". Writes "please stop driving taxis".

Stereotyping = racism. No?

Maybe the model is a taxi driver and the graffiti writer is just saying that he should quit and do full-time modeling?

If that dude was driving taxis I'd recommend he pursue modeling instead too. Man cuts a fine image. Lady too, for that matter. Yowza.

You're thinking of Saudi Arabia.

(Where, I understand, it's illegal for a woman to drive any sort of vehicle whilst blindfolded.)

Source

So, are people just being "hypersensitive about race" here? Is the graffiti just attempting to "[make] fun and [only] insulting someone for making fun", with no racial subtext necessarily present?

How many of you would say that racism is no longer a problem in the West?

Inb4 someone says i am racist for starting a thread that brings up race. Also inb4 someone complains about the source.

Edit: Accidentally submitted while typing out the tags and now I can't add more :gripe:

I expect the type of people who graffiti advertisements to hold these kinds of views.

EDIT: Doesn't mean they're indicative of the rest of society though.

It should be illegal. How could you even pay attention with a hunk like that beside of you?

I couldn't, I love seeing a man with a beard and a hairy chest in an advertisement. It is a strange advertisement though, it's for gap but they don't really show off the clothes. I don't really remember what the typical gap ads are like.

He's a Sikh. He's known as the Chic Sikh. He's a jewelry designer, actor, and general man-about-town in NYC.

*spits*

I wouldn't give him the time of day.

(Don't worry, it's not racism. Just envy.)

Well, if he would lose the beard, he probably would look quite good :dunno:

I still find the ad to be pointless. Aren't they supposed to show clothes? (like Nova said). I guess pcstroking earns more publicity :yup:

Who's the one stereotyping here? The article is judging an entire country of 300 million people ("we don't live in a post-racial society") based on the actions of one or two individuals on a subway in NYC (the racist comments wrote on the ad).

Well, if your argument is that we don't live in a post-racial society, isn't all you have to do is be a screaming racist yourself in order to throw the conversations that you have in your favor?

The minority blaming has appeared at last :goodjob:

So what you're suggesting is that a post-racial society can exist in parallel with a racist sub-section of the same society?

Also, and this is directed to everyone, what makes the graffiti on the poster substantially different from saying, to use a recent example, "Japanese women don't like sex; it must be because Japanese men are into watching tentacle raep"? A lot of people here could get behind the latter.

With over 300 million in this country there will always be some racists. I'm sure there is still some individuals who believe the earth is flat, does that mean 'flat earth thinking' is a wide spread problem?

There are more racists than people who think the world is flat. Do you think the majority of Americans are racists? What is an acceptable percentage? Or will you just say any incident is proof of 'widespread problems', in which case you will be saying racism is a problem for the next 1000+ years.

There is certainly one way to think that racism still isn't a pervasive problem. Live in a rural community in Wisconsin with few minorities, and presume that the rest of the country must be the same while "drinking with Obama".

I don't really follow this reasoning. Are you saying racists have unnaturally long life-spans?
