Random Rants 80: Computer Says No

Yesterday I had JPEG artefacts on my desktop from no source in particular. Today my mouse would freeze up every five seconds for 2-3 seconds. I disabled AMD's ReLive recording app and the mouse lag (seriously, WTH?) was fixed instantly. JPEGs have yet to return, but time will tell. I suspect AMD's settings somehow got majorly screwed up, OR my GPU is actually dying (again) and that's why the software is broken. I already replaced my PSU because for nearly two weeks my monitor would intermittently turn off for absolutely no goddamn reason and I thought my 50-month old low quality Corsair CX PSU was somehow the culprit. I am no longer sure why I even suspected that to be the problem. Also, embarrassingly enough, although the monitor did the same act today, with the new PSU, but simply holding the monitor's OSD button to turn it off and back on again fixed the problem. I had not previously tried this remedy, preferring to sigh in resignation and hold the power button on the computer tower itself. Why? :badcomp::hammer2::wallbash:

edit: phew, the PSU was not a dumb replacement because I just remembered the old one would sometimes spin its fan up very noisily before the monitor died. And, in fact, sometimes the whole OS would crash reboot. So that was justified - but now, problems again immediately after solving the old ones :badcomp:

Senior Director of Engineering: Job titles aren't important and don't matter
Me (in my head): Yes, that's good to know. Mind if I call you Junior Intern Wrangler from here on?
Senior Director of Engineering: Not like that

How many of them are needed to "change a light bulb" joke ? Should get him off his paradise senior director of engineering play-pan ? ... I'd run ! and fast ;)

Congratulations, You have been infected. Format Your drive ASAP ;)

That is also a strong possibility, much to my dismay. My netflix account has been taken over by both email and password changes, so I can't even reset it.

edit: nah, MBites only found the same 3 false positives it always has.

Ctrl + Shift + Esc to the task manager -> if there are more than 2 pages, You're screwed. Sorry to say it so bluntly ;)

ah, but I froze my windows back in like 2017 so I have a superior, pageless task manager. Only 6 active programs with 94 background programs in a whole separate bullet point that I can ignore at my pleasure. Some people with more recent editions of Win10 have them both clumped together or - even scrolling into pages? because Windows is the worst.

@cardgame please ! Stop making excuses. I have been infected a gazillion times ! Please just format the dang thing ! :D ;) It is for Your own good , trust me, You've got something on a infected drive ? You can get it again, trust me. Nothing gonna save You from burning that away if the virus has it's way anyway , plus there's sensitive data, account passwords - that sort of thing. All encrypted away on Your HD, so format it ! ;) If it isn't the infection than You'll be extra sure that Your data is safe ;)

Kind of sounds like a motherboard issue

Sounds like it for me too.

There could have been a girl.

That's the plan for tonight, but last night has been pure suffering, so I'm sort of afraid.

And dmsince it fits to recent posts: Going to get a hair cut today, wish me luck.

I got a spam email from myself with a subject of "Do you want to see my nude photos?"

That's awkward.

In light of Tom Welling joining the next CW crossover event (@EgonSpengler ), I decided it would be a good idea to start setting up for a total re-watch of all the CW DC shows in chronological order and then catching up from where I stopped (3 seasons or so ago). A huge undertaking.

I did find a list of what order to watch everything in, so that's sorted.

No, my rant is about Crave, a Bell streaming service in Canada. Some of the CW titles transferred to Crave from Netflix, so to get this show on the road I had to finally bite the bullet and subscribe to this service.

It is somehow worse than Amazon Prime's UI. Just an absolute miserable thing to navigate, and if there's a page for changing player settings, I haven't found it. (Maybe they're stuffed into the actual player, I suppose I'll find out tonight.)

What's more annoying is that Crave follows the same nonsensical strategy as Prime, wherein both sites put in premium content alongside what your subscription pays for. So when you're scrolling through the genres and the front page, you can very easily click on something that interests you, then click on Watch, and then find out uh-oh! Your subscription plan doesn't cover this show/movie! Wouldn't you just love to upgrade?

No. And doing this doesn't make me want to upgrade. It just makes me frustrated. Just show me the content I paid for. If I want to know what I could get if I upgraded, have it on a separate page. Have it in a dedicated carousel. Hell, I don't really care where you put it, just don't show me a catalog and then drop it on me at the gate that what I paid for doesn't cover what I'm trying to see.

The player is even worse than Prime's too. It's not in theatre mode. The quality is hard-capped at 720p. And the subtitles resemble closed captioning from the TV, and it's in the center of the screen. Can't change it.

Good old-fashioned Canadian oligarchy investment.

I bought a device that measures the air quality in my apartment. Turns out it kinda bad. So I'm shelling out for a fancy air purifier. We'll see if it makes a difference. :dunno:

Don't bother. Just fly @MaryKB on over and you'll find the quality of all things, not just the air, bump up considerably. :P

I woke up at 4:50 AM. This is not good, as I fell asleep at 1:20 AM. See, this is not good, because that is not a significant range of time, and thus unacceptable for human rest.
