Random Rants 80: Computer Says No

I'm pretty disappointed in my daughter right now. We talked to my daughter's school today and it turns out she gave them a different story about a specific incident regarding this bully. When we talked to my daughter about it, she admitted that she made the story up to avoid having to tell us she accidentally ripped the pocket on her backpack.

Luckily this came out before I actually went through with threatening the school with legal action. As corrective action, I'm having my daughter write me an essay on lying, why it is wrong, and how lying can hurt others and make problems worse. I'm also having her write apology letters to her teacher and the kid she almost got in trouble for nothing.

Well done, Dad!

I can't tell if I'm going to make the hours-worked cutoff for seasonal unemployment or if I need to be looking for another job soon. I also don't have my own place, which I need to have by November or at worst Dec 1. So we're in a similar stress boat, hobbs.
I hope it gets resolved soon. Can you move in with your boyfriend?

Rant: spent the morning trying to fix the brakes on my bike and I made everything worse. There's a repair place down the road that is really cheap and is close enough I can risk pedaling to it (bike won't fit in the car) with faulty brakes. I'm going to go up there tomorrow.

Don't tell them you tried to fix it. Tell them the neighborhood kids vandalized it.

Yes, that's been my experience too.

About 3 hours ago, after downloading a file and trying to rename it, Windows Explorer crashed. Whenever I tried to open it directly from the normal icon it would then crash again immediately. I could still open it from the recycling bin icon or my browser downloads list without it crashing, but if I navigated to that file and tried to rename it again it would crash again. It was not something I cared much about so i just deleted it. I then decided restarting my laptop might help explorer get back to normal.Restart just turned if off. When I try to manually turn it on it encounters a problem that it has not been able to fix. After trying for 3 hours I decided to reset the PC, removing all programs and reinstalling Windows while hopefully keeping all of my files. I have not backed anything up on my external hard drive in months, and have made major changes to my modmod in the past few weeks. I'd hate to loose it all.

Typing this on my phone is annoying. Android makes the strangest auto corrects and adds periods in the middle of the sentence. I think I caught all such mistakes but may have missed something. My phone screen has enough cracks that it is hard to read in sone places.

What sort of file is it?

I've had issues with corrupt images/videos occasionally crashing explorer when attempting to generate a thumbnail. I had to use a third-party file manager that only used generic icons to get rid of it.

I also managed to once rename a file to an invalid name. (I have no idea how.) Trying to fix that took a while.

It was a short mp4 video file, just a ~2 minute trailer for a longer movie. The video itself played fine in VLC, but somehow got a https://www. as the start of the file name and it would not let me change that. It was not heard to delete it though.

My attempt to reset the PC failed twice. After several more attempts to restart itself with no sign that things would ever get better, a restart attempt that seemed no different from the others actually worked. I was using my mom's desktop to make a USB Windows install ISO when I noticed it had finally proceeded to the usual lock screen. I put in my PIN and everything started like normal, just with the notification: “We removed some recently installed updates to recover your device from a startup failure.”

I seem to have all my files and programs still.

That sounds like it was just crappy timing, then. You ended up with a bad update at the same time as downloading that messed-up file.

I tried logging into GOG today. It wouldn't let me because it claimed to have no one with my user name. So I tried opening up a new account. It wouldn't let me because it claimed to already have someone with my user name. :dubious: I should probably mention that the Internet hates me. :backstab:

I got Steam to agree to honor my credit card.

I resolved my GOG problem, and now have Anno 1404 wishlisted. :)

On Steam, I purchased Out of the Park Baseball XX and wishlisted Capitalism 2.

When I tried to run it, the game froze. I found CPU usage had shot up to 100% and wasn't going away. I finally, I was able to trigger a shutdown/restart and then uninstalled the game. [pissed]
Go to the game's support forums, find out if anyone else has the problem.

And so ends my career as a Baseball super star....:(

I ordered two turkey breakfast sandwiches from the grocery store and they gave me breakfast sandwiches with prosciutto instead.

Today I learned that prosciutto is super gross.

The bacon they used could hardly be called bacon as well.

I think this is the first time that I've removed the meat instead of the veggies from a sandwich.

Well it will have to wait. My latest rant is involving that indie college football game I've been "playing". I put that in quotations because I haven't actually gotten to play it yet since I'm still turning all the generic teams into real life teams.

My rant though involves the custom logo editor in the game. It's a great tool that is simple to use, but still gives you everything you need to be able to quickly make real life teams logos. However, the game only gives you 50 slots for saving custom logos. This is a problem because there are 130 teams and a lot of them have two logos, one for their midfield logo and another one that goes on their helmets. So 50 slots is nowhere near enough slots for logos.
