Random Rants #88: [incoherent screaming]

My moving situation is driving me nuts. First I'm offered a suite on the 5th floor. I spend 90 minutes there measuring and making a list of repairs needed. The next day I'm told nope, it's rented.

They offer me a suite on the 6th floor - with a view that reaches into the county on a clear day, and no more water-related accidents can happen. I go and have a look, make plans to hire a mover... and then I'm told somebody else rented it.

Now I'm offered a place on the 4th floor, other side of the building. There are pros and cons... it's the same layout as my current place, the balcony is a single (I hate sharing balconies), there are trees, grass, and a bit of a horizon to the east (would have to be able to shut out the sun in the morning and wouldn't have any sunlight in the afternoon in winter). I spent time measuring, making a list of needed repairs and changes I want and ones I don't want them to do. Standard procedure here when anyone moves out of a "classic suite" is to rip out the carpet, install laminate flooring, and put in a fancy stove and fridge.

I don't use stoves, so I said I would prefer no stove so I could put in extra storage (there's only 1 small drawer in the kitchens in this building, which is not enough). I'll let them put in the new fridge. Another "upgrade" is a double sink, which I told them I don't want - since I rarely cook anything that needs more than one dish, what do I need a big sink for? It just takes up precious countertop space and is one more plumbing issue to worry about.

We compromised on the carpet/flooring. I'll keep the carpet in the living room and bedrooms and they can rip it out of the rest (hallway, dining room, kitchen closet. No carpeting at all makes the acoustics too wacky - there's too much of an echo, not to mention it's unpleasant for bare feet. And some of my furniture is only stable on carpet and I don't want to have to worry about scuffing a non-carpeted floor.

What this means, if I get this place, is that moving day would be in October rather than September, which means more likelihood of some help and an easier time to schedule a mover. In the meantime, I'm still packing and I miss some of my penguins already. :(

The plus of this suite is that it faces northeast. That means being able to see the Moon, and next year's Perseids if the sky is clear. Sadly, it's too late for the comet, but there are others.

And the balcony is free of pigeon <crap>.

Now I just hope the manager left notes for his sub today so she doesn't rent yet another suite out from under me.

Rant: I hate the casual ableism in today's society. There's already a whole laundry list of reasons to hate the current POTUS, you don't need to pull up "he probably has a disability!!!" as another.

Could you elaborate on this? I'm not clear on who has been criticizing him and for what disability.

I dunno. If a disability affects someone's mind, they probably shouldn't be in charge of nuclear weapons and the economy. Am I channeling my internal ableism here? With how taxed I am simply by existing, I outright shouldn't have any authority of any kind. Because of my disability.

There were videos of him walking slowly down a ramp and using two hands to lift a glass of water. (You know, something that I have to do all the time because of my Parkinson's.) But people were mocking him for it....a lot of them the same people who came down on him for mocking "that disabled reporter" (hint: he has a name. It's Serge Kovaleski.)

There are a lot of other reasons that he's obviously unfit for office. You know, like being a damn *******.

So I guess the Kenosha police officers' union says the video of the shooting of Jacob Blake "doesn't show everything."

:wallbash:

Yes, mister officer, sir, please do tell us what explains shooting a man in the back seven times.

What kind of moron lets his bit....female dog in heat run free without a leash when biking. My back hurts from holding my own dog-a 30 kg mutt with most genes from Malinois shepherd-away from her. If they'd meet a dog without a leash, which could easily happen here, they'd have puppies before he could get down from his bike.

A person of culture I see :D

Not of hygiene though. What most people don't realize is that carpets are utterly dirty. No matter how hard to vacuum them or clean in any other way, they'll always be dirty. You'll notice when you need to rip one out once. If I got the chance to pick between carpet vs. no carpet, I'd always go for no carpet.

Oh, then I would agree. I thought the reactions to those were in poor taste, same with the hands and genitalia size talk. Thanks for clarifying.

Yeah, having trouble walking, or maybe having early-stage dementia or alzheimer's, or having small hands (or any other body part) do not make him a turd. It's his personality and laundry list of horrific actions that make him a turd.

Capitalism has created an entire strata of low-level managers whose only apparent purpose is to produce paperwork which makes mid-level managers feel better than high-level managers don't allow them to have any actual power. A small army of supervisors and petty managers whose primary occupation is producing endless reports to make mid-level managers feel like the haughty lords of a vast clerical fiefdom, to distract them the reality that they are largely interchangeable functionaries, and who in doing so can only hinder shop floor-level employers in doing whatever it is the business is supposed to be doing, as actual supervision is replaced with an erratic combination of neglect and micromanagement as dictated by the specific and arbitrary demands generated by whatever paperwork the mid-level managers are demanding that week.

i should probably read david graeber's book about "bulls- jobs", huh.

I recently read a book that compared the bureaucracy of the late Roman Empire with modern multinational corporations and how the inefficiencies of such a system can lead to its downfall. So happy 2020 everyone!

Anyway, my rant is about shrimp that are peeled but still have the tails left on them. What is the point of the tails!? I don't want to eat them and I've already paid extra to have the shrimp peeled, but why only peel 90% of it? Why not go the whole way? The worst is when the shrimp are included in a pasta dish with sauce and oil and stuff and you can't just eat it with a utensil. Instead you have to get your fingers all messy by grabbing the thing and squeezing it to get all the meat out.

Crunchy.

Actually its like 11 or 12 and the cost is $8000
Bummer. Mouth hygiene and regular visits to a dentist can be important.

I'm completely exhausted by how hard, hot, and miserable, this summer has been. I have no energy left.
