My moving situation is driving me nuts. First I'm offered a suite on the 5th floor. I spend 90 minutes there measuring and making a list of repairs needed. The next day I'm told nope, it's rented.
They offer me a suite on the 6th floor - with a view that reaches into the county on a clear day, and no more water-related accidents can happen. I go and have a look, make plans to hire a mover... and then I'm told somebody else rented it.
Now I'm offered a place on the 4th floor, other side of the building. There are pros and cons... it's the same layout as my current place, the balcony is a single (I hate sharing balconies), there are trees, grass, and a bit of a horizon to the east (would have to be able to shut out the sun in the morning and wouldn't have any sunlight in the afternoon in winter). I spent time measuring, making a list of needed repairs and changes I want and ones I don't want them to do. Standard procedure here when anyone moves out of a "classic suite" is to rip out the carpet, install laminate flooring, and put in a fancy stove and fridge.
I don't use stoves, so I said I would prefer no stove so I could put in extra storage (there's only 1 small drawer in the kitchens in this building, which is not enough). I'll let them put in the new fridge. Another "upgrade" is a double sink, which I told them I don't want - since I rarely cook anything that needs more than one dish, what do I need a big sink for? It just takes up precious countertop space and is one more plumbing issue to worry about.
We compromised on the carpet/flooring. I'll keep the carpet in the living room and bedrooms and they can rip it out of the rest (hallway, dining room, kitchen closet. No carpeting at all makes the acoustics too wacky - there's too much of an echo, not to mention it's unpleasant for bare feet. And some of my furniture is only stable on carpet and I don't want to have to worry about scuffing a non-carpeted floor.
What this means, if I get this place, is that moving day would be in October rather than September, which means more likelihood of some help and an easier time to schedule a mover. In the meantime, I'm still packing and I miss some of my penguins already.
The plus of this suite is that it faces northeast. That means being able to see the Moon, and next year's Perseids if the sky is clear. Sadly, it's too late for the comet, but there are others.
And the balcony is free of pigeon <crap>.
Now I just hope the manager left notes for his sub today so she doesn't rent yet another suite out from under me.
