Random Rants 92 - Not Enough Snerk

There is such a thing as getting heatstroke.

Isn't it a ripoff how we get colds but never warms?

Imagine if you got a warm one day and were more productive & felt a lot better for a couple days, and people wanted to hang out with you more and potentially exchange bodily fluids so they could catch some of your warm
wouldn't be nice!

What is your new designation, or have you decided on one yet?

Catneutral until further notice?

Rant: HTPC died without apparent reason - first hour of Ad Astra wasn't that bad. Excessive heat is the usual suspect but that didn't seem likely without further inspection.

You can't be neutral regarding cats. You have to love them.

Synobun was too fast so the quote as well.

You can't be neutral regarding cats. You have to love them.

That's a fair point but I've seen & heard people acting in ways that are in disagreement with this sentiment.

Yeah, washing machines exist.

The washing machine is the problem. :( So much pilling that I have to manually extract from the basin. Five washes in and it's still happening.

Pilling? You mean those little tufts of cloth?

Maybe you could try to use a comb.

Or take the towel to the manufacturers.

So, the success of the holidays with my friends so far:
- We all 3 got stung my jellyfish
- our rental car got scratched
- one of my friends caught a cold is feeling pretty crappy right now-
- I got told that I'm losing hair on the top of my head, and while it really doesn't look like, I still managed to get a sunburn there

(there were also many nice things, like a nice hike, 2 pretty cities and a great concert, but I felt like ranting)

Just read today about a fatal shark-attack on a swimmer near Hurghada (the victim made it back to shore, but died from her injuries on her way to/ in hospital).

Online reports linked from Yahoo say the site was "Sahl Hasheesh", which is only about a half-hour felucca-ride north of where I used to work, in Makadi Bay. Abu Hasheesh was one of my favorite spots to take beginners for their second pair of qualifying-dives; it was a nice place for ordinary guided-dives as well.

This kind of accident is a vanishingly rare occurrence, but the local authorities nonetheless (and understandably) ordered all watersports suspended for 3 days as a precaution. And the bad press may/will likely cause people to decide to go somewhere else this summer, or even cancel existing bookings.

Over the last couple of years (decades?), the Egyptian tourism industry (which earns a substantial percentage of the country's foreign income) has been hammered repeatedly by various crappenings (some of which were beyond any possible control) and now the country is facing potential food-shortages from losing their wheat imports (from Ukraine). So they really didn't need this **** right now, dammit.

They really didn't need this **** right now, dammit.
That is why Egypt is way down on my destination list even though I would like to go there. Bad uncertainty is the bugaboo of traveling.

Total random Tak-style comment: what is a felucca?

CNN, 3 July 2022 - "Jayland Walker suffered at least 60 wounds in fatal police shooting, Akron police chief says, as authorities release bodycam footage"

Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow - known simply as "Bonnie and Clyde" - were shot 42 times, combined. Parker was hit 25 times and Barrow was hit 17 times. Police hit their car with 112 rounds.

John Dillinger was shot 4 times in his final gunfight with FBI agents. 3 agents fired a total of 6 shots.

Al Capone's men fired 100+ rounds at Bugs Moran's North Side Gang in the Valentine's Day Massacre, in which 7 men were killed with Thompson submachine guns and shotguns.

Larry Phillips and Emil Matasareanu were shot 10 times and 29 times, respectively, in the 44-minute North Hollywood Bank of America shootout, in which the suspects fired ~1,100 rounds and wounded 12 police officers.

It's currently unknown how many shots Akron police fired at Walker. Walker was being pulled over for a traffic violation, and may have fire a single shot at officers with a handgun.

Just wanted to put that out there.

Total random Tak-style comment: what is a felucca?
A small sailing boat. I went on one when I was in Egypt.
As I understand it, the name specifically refers to the hull-design. Traditionally they're sail-powered, but the dive-centre I worked for used feluccas fitted with large-ish (150 HP?) outboard motors to run their 'half-day' (single-dive) trips.

Update to the rant: this actually made this morning's 2-minute news headlines on the radio station I listen to in the car. Apparently a second victim's body has also been found in the vicinity.

They're blaming a [shortfin] mako shark, which sounds strange to me, because makos are pelagic fish-eaters preying almost exclusively on fast-swimming fish like tuna and trevally, and so have long, pointed, smooth-bladed teeth adapted for catching, rather than cutting. But the first victim reportedly lost an arm and a leg (this may be an exaggeration, details are still sketchy), i.e. she was bitten at least twice, and limb-amputation sounds more like a tiger-shark attack to me (tigers have short, triangular, serrated teeth, can bite through turtle-shells and bones, and have historically been implicated in more fatal attacks than makos — not least because they more habitually live and hunt in coastal waters).

Due to bad luck, some small shop which operates in this building placed a table outside and for a couple of weeks now a motley group of people sit there and talk non-stop. One of them is extremely old (over 80) and has been getting on my nerves (can't close the balcony door with this heat). It is annoying how he only uses a few tens of words, and one wonders if he fails to realize that he is essentially thinking the same thing over and over. His voice tone alludes to dementia as well.
Let's try to be positive and see this as more incentive to return to the millionaire class and avoid all that.
