Random Rants Eighty-Four: Rants Gone Wild!!!!

Meanwhile, I have to suck down the smog from all the people who drive their SUV's five blocks to work instead of walking and this is what the city is going after? This city has a ton of sidewalks that are both set off from buildings by 10 to 20 feet of greenery and are along public roads far from residences. I can't see why people shouldn't be allowed to smoke in those kinds of areas. Like I said, they're right next to congested streets so the smell and health arguments go out the window.

Another small rant: I keep getting spontaneously logged out of Prolific. I don't want to think about how many surveys I might've missed because of this. :cringe:

It makes the politicians feel good.

Yes and this will be used as another pretext by the police to remove homeless people from the streets and criminalize them for existing. That will also please the politicians and a lot of the people who live here. They really hate the homeless here.

So basically you could make the case that your city banned smoking in its entirely. Isn't federal law legalizing it an overruling factor here?

Not really. Things can be legal at the federal level and illegal at the state level. The opposite is true as well. All that really determines is which law enforcement agency is going to hem you up for it.

Federal law only really overrides state law in matters that involve disputes between states or crimes that cross state lines.

I absolutely hate smoking and would like to see it disappear forever but this feels like just a bit too much.

I guess I can't complain too much since it's accomplishing my goal, but jeez. Harsh.

On Windows 7, I used to use a tool called Hotkey Explorer to figure out all the global hotkey commands for various programs. Unfortunately, it's not compatible with Windows 10.

"Not compatible" meaning that it triggered every possible key combination. I ended up with a zillion open windows, an upside-down screen, and Narrator activated. Ended up having to reboot.

That wasn't very smart.

An image @Truthy posted of a soda machine reminded me: Do you guys actually like Gold Peak Iced Tea? I had some on the train a week and a half ago and it was disgusting. It felt very literal, as though they brewed tea and just let it cool at room temperature for a few hours. I got the sweetened kind but it tasted the same as normal tea, except you don't even have the scalding heat to fall back on. Just concentrated disgusting leaf water. Awful. Worst $4 I've ever spent.
Have you tried brewing your own tea to the correct point, then chilling and bottling it? It works for me, far better than pre-made ‘tea’.
Why can't people on Facebook stop broadcasting these moronic one-liner shots (pro and con) about their pet political fetishes?

Even the ones where I agree with the sentiment, or maybe especially with them, they're so pathetically one-sided and slanted.

"YOU'RE NOT CONVINCING ANYONE, STFU!!!"

I think I'm going to start posting that as a copy/paste response to all of them.

Maybe I'll remove the STFU part.
It's Facebook: it's not intended for reasoned debate.
On that topic: how come somebody with a hot chick with a gun for an avatar ever gets trouble on Facebook?
I'm pretty sure a slight majority of employers don't even offer sick days.
Well, you are in the U.S. of A. :/

Well, see, I haven't, because tea is disgusting.

Arizona and Pure Leaf are good tho

Oh, I don't get trouble. I just watch trouble. Sometimes it is popcorn-worthy, sometimes it is facepalmfest-worthy, and rarely is the difference clear beforehand.

So apparently I'm going to have to yell at a city employee on Monday. He keeps complaining to the security guards that the janitors aren't properly cleaning his office. First off, that's not a security issue, it's a facilities issue. He, and every other city employee knows this and knows that they are supposed to contact facilities if they have a problem like that. They are not supposed to be distracting my guards with petty crap like that. Secondly, I talked to facilities about the problem and they said they've been having problems with this clown for a while and that the janitors are cleaning his office properly.

Apparently he used to be an executive at some company and is used to be pampered and treated like a princess (yes I said princess on purpose). So now I have to have a talk with him about not bothering my guards with non-security related issues. I'm going to tell him that if he continues to do it, we will block his desk phone from being able to call down to the security desk.

You'd better check twice that you actually are allowed to block his phone.

I don't threaten someone with an action unless I know I have the authority to take that action.

I think that rule 289.c§6/a/9 has a ban on baseball bats being employed on leap years. Off the top of my head, of course.
