Hmm... I don't know what to say.

Let's hope it won't start chewing shoelaces and phone/Internet cables.

He's already tried both chewing both. I considered letting him work his way through the live extension cord and then he made this cute little noise and chased his tail so I stopped his suicide attempt. For now.

Something tells me you already want to keep him. :)

Something tells me that if this does end in tears, it won't be my mate Hobbs who suffers it will be the dog.

If it does turn out to be a shepherd then you are looking at a very demanding animal (physically, financially and most importantly, emotionally) with a long lifespan that needs a great deal of attention and two hours of solid exercise every day for the rest of it's life.

If Hobbs can't totally commit to the dog now then it needs another home.

We named him Lincoln btw since we were watching Lincoln when my wife made the sudden life decision to buy him.

We aren't sure he is a Shepard, that's a guess based on his looks but he's definitely not a Pomeranian as the owner tried to pass him off as.

I know you all don't know me but trust me we will do right by this dog, we can't keep a large breed dog - this whole ordeal is my fault for not putting my foot down when I first saw him. But despite that, we are taking him to get his shots and examination today even if the vet tells us he's a large breed and we can't keep him. I'm not going to unload an unvaccinated, unexamined puppy on strangers, he's going to get his shots, his check up and registered because we are not bad people we just made a (possibly) bad choice. We'll also work to ensure he goes to a good home.

Hopefully the vet will be able to tell us what he is with certainty.

As proof of our commitment to do right by the dog, last night after buying him we discussed that we might not be able to keep him if he's a large breed. Despite that distinct possibility, we walked an hour (round trip) to Wal Mart to buy him a cage, a leash, a collar and puppy food at 9pm. We are also getting him his shots even if we can't keep him as I said.

I'll try and post what the vet tells us about his breed as soon as I can.

Relax fellow CFCers. The post above and a brief PM exchange has confirmed one thing is certain....

Lincoln's gonna be allllright! K9, The Littlest Hobo and all those other jive turkey TV shepherds aint gonna have nuthin' on him. He'll be sniffing out mines in the DMZ before you know it.

What the hell was I thinking doubting Hobbs? :)

Tons of Hobbs posts in spoiler...

Spoiler :
So my wife cruised the local classified ads looking for a puppy. She found a 'Pomeranian' puppy for $100. She texts the owner and it becomes apparent the owner wanted to offload the puppy right now because she's preggers and about to drop a baby.

I'm smelling scam and I tell my wife as much but she's already emotionally invested in a puppy that may or may not exist. Anywho, the owner shows up and sure enough she has a puppy. It has no shot records and there's no way it's a Pomeranian (pretty sure it's a German Shephard). However, my wife already is pair-bonding with the damn animal and it's really hard to look an 8 month pregnant 19 year old in the eyes and say GTFO scammer. So I cut the check knowing that if this dog grows past 20lbs we are going to have to give it up - on this even my wife agrees. Hell, it's not even on the lease and we'll get slammed if we keep him and the landlord finds out.

My only consolation is that even if we have to give up the dog, the $100 we spent on it went towards that little baby in the oven. (hopefully)

I should have stopped this, it's such a disaster. This is the worst possible time to buy a puppy. Why did I have to go soft, why couldn't I be the dick and tell the preggers chick to get out????

Needless to say I won't be very active for a while. :(

If you sh!t on my stuff again mutt I WILL END YOU.

Cuddly little monster...

Yes I second that, post some pics now! The monster must be known to the world :) You may hate him now, but the fluffball will grow on you

This board's dog worship is just as annoying to me as my cat worship is annoying to CFC'ers. :p

The Mako.

The Mako is great fun on picturesque worlds like Virmire. It's the boring near-vertical mountains on the more generic worlds that make the Mako un-fun.

Something tells me you already want to keep him. :)
Well I do. I should really elaborate a bit now that I have a minute between classes so the full picture is clearer for everyone.

When I said my wife bought the dog on a whim, that was a bit of an exaggeration. In reality, she's had a case of the puppylust for months and has been aggitating for a small-breed puppy for a long time. I have steadfastily refused on the grounds that the timing was awful and we should wait until the summer when my wife is off work (as a teacher) and can spend all day with said puppy.

Yesterday afternoon she was cruising the web looking at random puppy pictures and checking the prices of local puppies for sale when she came across the $100 Pomeranian puppy offer. Given that those puppies are typically ~$1000+, the deal seemed too good to be true but still warranted investigation. Plus, with my wife going on summer vacation in a couple of weeks the timing was good enough to not pass up a potential steal on a Pomeranian puppy and it was certainly good enough that I couldn't just reflexively tell my wife 'no' without further investigation.

We did investigate and through our line of questioning it became apparent that the seller wasn't telling the whole truth at the very least. She told us that he had all his shots but she lost them in a flood last week and the way she answered some questions were real tip-offs. However, she (the seller) was willing to bring it by the house and I figured that we could at least see the dog and then if it wasn't a Pomeranian we would turn her down. I told my wife that if it wasn't a Pomeranian then I would do just that and cancel the whole deal.

Unfortunately I didn't stick to my guns. I was fairly certain it wasn't a Pomeranian but my wife was already attached to him at first sight and would have believed the seller if she told us the puppy was a tap-dancing Ewok from Endor if it meant we could keep it. That and the fact that the seller was seriously pregnant and could doubtlessly use the money for baby clothes, diapers and such short-circuited my logic circuits and I didn't stop the transaction. I should have stopped it, this is all my fault.

We do want a puppy and are realy hoping that the vet can assure us he's a small breed or a small breed mix so that we can keep him. We cannot and will not keep a puppy (no matter how cute) that is going to grow into a German Shepard or similar large breed. It's simply not fair to the animal to keep them couped up in a smallish apartment without a fenced yard. We are really good about walking - especially my wife as she believes in staying 'healthy' - but puppies of large breeds need space, period. We can provide exercise and a loving home but space we do not have. So if the vet tells us it's a big dog, we'll begin the process of finding a good home. If the vet doesn't know what the puppy is we are faced with a really difficult choice: adopt him off or wait to see how big he gets and face the possibility that he'll be bigger than expected and we'll be attached to him. I frankly do not know how we'll handle that situation.

One thing is clear though: we are going to do right by this puppy. I screwed up and let the transaction happen but I'm not going to make things worse and either dump the dog on the first taker or keep it despite it not being suited to our living space. If it turns out we can't keep him we are going to make sure he gets all the care and medical necessities taken care of and that he goes to a good home. So even though we may have screwed up, the dog is certainly going to be better off than he was with his old owner or with some other random buyer who would've been duped into buying a 'Pomeranian' and then abandoned him when he turned out not to be.

There is still a slight chance that he won't be a large breed and we can keep him. Here's hoping that's the case.

Thanks man.

I don't know about sniffing out land mines but I'm certainly going to instruct him in the finer points of emancipation and Atlanta-razing.

I already like the little monster, he makes the cutest little howel when he's upset (still getting used to his cage - it was a rough night). It all just depends on how big he's going to get on whether we can keep him and it'll be tricky if the vet can't tell what exactly he is. :\

Now you know how I feel. :mischief:

Did I mention that sweet puppy Lincoln came with cat-killing software pre-installed? :p

For the record: If I have to give him up I'm not going to ask money for the dog despite having sunk ~$200 in him for shots, his cage, food, etc. I'm going to give him away for free to the best home and I don't want money to be an obstacle to that.

You know, this is getting ridiculous.

After I got myself tempbanned from Fiftychat a few years back for posting seriously anti-dog sentiment (as in worse than what you just said in the quoted post), I learned to keep my mouth shut,
and so have since been happy to keep my anti-dog sentiments to myself, until you came along broadcasting similar genocidal comments about cats without consequence, and constantly yappin' away about it, and needlessly trolling me.

So with that said, don't bother continuing our ancient PM convo about my blue alien planet.

Goodbye. Nice knowing ya.

Taco Bell is delicious, you're ridiculous.
I knew that our love wasn't perfect, cardgame. At least it's not about the important things in life.
There was a group presentation in one of my classes today about eligibility for admission. Multiple speakers pronounced it as 'illegibility'.
Well, they're Australian, it's not that terrible for them to have pronunciation problems.
Post pictures NOW! I should not have to wait for new puppy pictures.
But V, cats are superior.

Actually, it is you who owe me a PM not the other way around.

Sorry to see you ragequit a friensahip over a lame joke and a fiftychat ban I wasn't even around fiftychat for.

Dude, I got kicked from Fiftychat yesterday for saying I don't like mayonaise. And I stand by that. Frak mayonaise. You can't let this stuff get to your head.
