I was a '90s kid, but weirdly enough the only thing I can remember from the 1990s is seeing a Y2K-compliant flashlight.
:dubious:

The 1990s were quite a decade, what with the federal election of 1993 (that was also the year I turned 30 and was given a surprise party ;)), Meech Lake, and the Charlottetown Accord. That was also the year when I adopted Gussy, a stray kitten who turned up in the back yard.

As for Y2K, it's still bemusing that Red Deer celebrated the year 2000 a full day before any other city on the planet. Our emergency services were so worried about Y2K that they insisted that the First Night Society hold our annual New Year's celebration on December 30, rather than the 31st. They were afraid that at the stroke of midnight a Catastrophe of Catastrophic Proportions would descend on the downtown area where all those families with children were expected to be taking in musical performances, magic shows, art activities, storytelling, and so on and to hear them carry on, it would be like a 1970s disaster movie.

We were given two options (I was on the board of directors for First Night that year, so I had a ringside seat to all this): Hold the celebrations a night early or cancel altogether.

This was in the late spring/early summer when we were told this, so we figured that a day early was better than nothing, since it was something the community looked forward to - a family-friendly non-alcholic New Year's party held in several venues within a few blocks in the downtown, with fireworks at midnight.

So we went ahead and booked the acts, rented the venues, made the arrangements with the City for parking, barricades, having first-aid services, and all the rest... and then in the fall, we were told, "Sorry, we seem to have overreacted a bit. Things probably won't be as bad as we thought, so go ahead and hold your festival on the 31st."

By that time it was too late to cancel the arrangements and rebook everything. We'd have lost $$$$$ and some of the performers we'd wanted for the 31st had already booked other gigs.

So we went ahead and had it in the 30th. It turned out to be a good thing, since the weather was nice and it was fairly warm outside (as in not much below 0C, with no appreciable wind chill). I remember that night for another reason; I'd spent so much time in board meetings that I really had no interest in attending the thing itself, so my boyfriend and I went to a movie. That was the last movie I ever went to - haven't set foot in a theatre since.

The next night was horribly frigid. A cold front swooped in, so people were quite glad we'd had the celebration the night before. And that was the night when the new millennium was rung in around the world - musical performances in every time zone, over a 24-hour period. They even had one at the South Pole, which was in every time zone simultaneously. I wasn't able to stay awake for the whole 24 hours, but I do remember our then-current MP saying on TV that his city had already rung in the new millennium the night before - the first city in the world to do that.

The reason Y2K didn't end up as badly as everyone thought it was is because programmers did a hell of a lot of work to fix it ahead of time. There were still some glitches but it could've been worse.

Yeah, I was hired 3 years prior to head up the effort for one company. A lot of resources were committed and we experienced 0 issues at the turn.
A big bonus ensued. :)

City is on lockdown because of the stupid G-20 and actual bomb-laying anarcho-terrorist morons but Djerman classes aren't suspended anyway.

I suppose I'll have to take it and run.

Edit: the ‘morons’ thing is because they managed to injure themselves with the bomb rather than kill people.

Since both Putin and Trump will be in town, we expect you to take care of business and mis-translate their conversation.

Well, since I didn't land any jobs for the G20 event I'll be studying Djerman and/or playing vidjamagames. And cooking. And eating. I've already showered this week so I'm covered. Hmmm, I guess I could do laundry?

I'm older than you. I can remember the '90s.

*is reminded of the Spice Girls and experiences gag reflex*
Pft. I remember the nineties. I know all the lyrics to "Wannabe", even the bizarre rap that they use at the middle eight.

:eek2:

I think you need a hug.
If you're handing them out, then in the mid-90s, for around 18 months straight, I worked 50-60 hour 6-day weeks at a sports centre where management piped local radio over the (t)annoy; it was particularly audible on poolside, where I spent 80% of my shifts. So I was forced to listen to every Spice Girls single released during that period, at least 4-5 times a day. By the time I quit, I knew the lyrics to all of them

:grouphug:

( Oops, sorry, Rants Thread was that way -----------------> )

I think this qualifies you for honourary British citizenship.

That's very kind of you, but conferring honorary British citizenship on me is unnecessary, since I already are one, still, technically, just about. It's just that I've been non-resident in the UK since late 1998.

And in retrospect, it could possibly be suggested that the rise of the Spice Girls was at least a contributory element to my leaving in the first place...

One wonders why we're discussing the Spice Girls in the Raves thread. :p

I remember Spice Girls being really big when I was in high school, my sister was really into them especially. They're never my favorite group, but I'm not bothered by them, as I prefer softer music generally and I'm not really fond of pop and all, but I'd totally rather listen to them than any kind of heavy metal or something.

Well it's been two months since my car accident, and I haven't heard from that boy I hit, so I guess I'm starting to feel safe that I'm not going to be sued? :)

If the insurance companies settled it, you might never needed to be informed.

My insurance company told me they're going to pay the claim from the other person, and if he wants money he'd have to sue me. I was told I could be sued for repairs up to a maximum of $1,000 or his deductible, whichever's lower. I'd imagine he'd want to get his truck fixed right away, and so he would've had to pay quite a while ago, right? And if he couldn't just easily pay his deductible, if he has one, he'd want to get money from me soon? I'm not sure how long I'll need to wait to be completely sure I'm not going to get sued, but as every week goes by I just feel my odds are getting smaller and smaller :)

And yay, I'm finally #1 waiting to speak to a suicide counselor, after waiting about 30 minutes at #3 and 40 minutes at #2, so hopefully it shouldn't be more than another half an hour or so before I can talk to someone :)

Sounds good. The first step to solving a problem is to admit that you have it.

Wow. This could qualify as a TIL post, but I'm just going to put it here since it's also a rave: Today I Learned that I can actually write a lot more in a single day than I ever thought.

I'm a week and a half behind where I should be with this year's NaNoWriMo, so I've really been pushing myself the last few days to get to 50,000 words.

Even if I don't make it, today was worth taking note because I just achieved my personal best as far as the number of words in a single day: 6,616. That's over 2000 more than my previous personal best in a single day.

The story itself is just shy of 33,000 words so far, with three days to go. I can make it if I keep this pace going for the next three days.

And then I spend December crashing and catching up on a ton of stuff I haven't been doing because I've been concentrating so much on this.

Of course this means I've got an even tougher goal to meet next year...

I'm going to the store later today to look at getting a new computer mouse! (I convinced my mother by telling her she can take my current one. It's in good shape, but it's too small for my hand.)
