He went on a rant on national television about Remembrance Day and people wearing poppies, and about how "you people" come here and take our resources and enjoy our luxuries but don't "support the troops."

"You people" obviously being signaling towards immigrants.

Nothing new for him. He's been like this forever. But he finally got fired for it.

I read the transcript, and honestly that didn't seem to be in the top five horrific things Don Cherry has said on the air. Maybe not even top ten.

Rave: I got a bonus payment on one of my surveys because of a high-quality answer. :)

The "poppy Mafia" are a thing in the UK as well.

They did that for a minute after 9/11 in the states only with US flag lapel pins instead of poppies. Obama got dragged for not wearing one on occasion and then we all seemed to move on. Politicians still wear the lapel pins as if part of their uniform but it's not a national obsession the way it was back then.

Just picked this up

I love maps and I love books like this, and this edition looks beautiful. When I saw it I had to pick it up right away.

My hDD completely died btw and I'm working on a restore. I've been really sick lately too, so I've been away. Not to mention busy. This book will fill my quiet/lazy/relaxing moments when I'm away from all the hooplah

It was like love at first sight. I saw it. I knew I was going to buy it as soon as I saw it. Then I opened it and oh my, it's really sexy inside

@warpus I hope you feel good enough soon to post a few pics of the inside of that book. I'm a map lover too.

His words are considered divisive and racist. Most of the recent immigrants to Canada come from various countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Central America... which is also where most of the asylum seekers are from (the people who started crossing illegally into Canada after Trump kicked his own policies into overdrive in 2017).

As for wearing the poppy... I made my annual donation to the Legion, took a poppy, and opted not to wear it when I had my doctor's appointment today... since my appointment was in the afternoon and custom says that poppies should be removed immediately after the Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Ron MacLean issued an apology for not doing anything to shut Cherry up or saying something right away, which was the proper thing to do. (fun fact: MacLean is from Red Deer)

Anyway, Here is one of the many articles about Cherry's firing.

I think you misunderstood me there. I wasn't saying Cherry should not have been fired for this latest horrific thing, just that he has said plenty of horrific things before...some even more blatant than this one. I'm sure not defending him.

Maybe they were looking for an excuse to fire him.

I'm a fan of Colin McEvedy's books, so what book is that, warpus?

I wasn't suggesting anything of the sort. I was just explaining why this time was so much worse, and served as the proverbial straw that made his firing inevitable.

As the article says, sports should be a unifying thing, where people of all countries and cultures should be able to coexist without divisive politically-minded racism. Cherry crossed a line, and is reaping the consequences.

There are plenty of immigrants, whether or not they have citizenship, who are interested in Remembrance Day. Some of my home care nurses are from various European countries, Central America, or the Philippines, and some of them have been asking me questions so they can have a better chance at passing their citizenship tests. I certainly don't mind explaining stuff to them.

Fair enough. It may have been an "accumulated straws" thing. I still think Cherry has said things in the past that were as bad or worse that he should have been fired for.

My restraining order got approved, he didn't show up to the hearing. It's good for one year, and it allows me to call the police if he makes contact with me or tries to follow me, etc. He officially got labeled as a "stalker" in my order, because of his actions and my feeling threatened. I'm hoping this will be enough to drive him away for good, and that he moves on with his life.

Rave: I got two surveys in a row. :) I almost got a third but it filled up before I got to it.

This picture says in Latvian that my sex(dzimums) is female(S stands for sieviete) and my new (Emīlija) name too. 1st document ever. Operation was in July.

Huge step to get something like this finally. I can get female passport as well now.
