(previous thread)

Let loose, dance, and Rave fellow CFCers! The Rants thread is much too busy, IMO.

I think...yes...

I like this thread title.

I like the .gifs.

I like where this is going.

rave: getting better grades on things than I expected is a bonus.

What if we all see different colors? Like what I think of as red you actually think of as blue. Everything that looks "red" to me looks "blue" to you, but since we can't actual describe how a color looks we just assume that it looks the same for everyone.

Yeah, I've seen The Matrix too.

Rave: The Matrix is a really good movie, and I've never seen the sequels at the advice of everyone.

Wow, the old rave thread went by more quickly than I thought.

Oh, Wittgenstein handled this one. I'm not sure I can remember what he said.

I think it's safe to assume that whatever we think we see when we see red, it is actually red. In general.

Especially if you point at something that looks red to you, and ask someone "What colour is that?", and you usually get the answer red.

Is that any help?

Rave: one exam down, four to go

shame about the four

Not sure about any of the Wittgenstein stuff, but the fact that if I point at something that I view as red and ask you what colour it is, and you say red, is moot. All this shows is whatever each of us perceives as red holds true for all things of the same colour. My green lights may look my version of pink to you, but we would call them the same thing....that thing being maybe someone elses orange

No. That was Wittgenstein's point exactly: that because we point to the same thing and say it's red, means precisely that we do see the same colour. (I think)

You'll just have to read the man yourself. I can't argue the case at all. Not being a philosopher. Or in any way clever.

If from birth I'm told that all things of a certain colour are red and you are told the same thing, then even though our individual perceptions of red could differ, we will both call anything of that perceived colour "red". But anyway, big derail, I'll read this guys stuff and let you know.

It's really just a variation on the Tasty Wheat example from The Matrix.

That's exactly my point. Exactly. Because you have to wonder: how do the machines know what Tasty Wheat tasted like? Maybe they got it wrong. Maybe what I think Tasty Wheat tasted like actually tasted like oatmeal, or tuna fish. That makes you wonder about a lot of things. You take chicken, for example: maybe they couldn't figure out what to make chicken taste like, which is why chicken tastes like everything.

The Matrix is a film I've yet to see.

The guy that says that line used to be Damo from Neighbours. It always amuses me to see the dodgy Aussie actors who get a gig in American movies filmed in Australia (like The Matrix). Union rules demand that a certain number must get a part so you find these washed up B grade actors putting on crappy American accents.

And technically that's a rave as it amuses me. So no derail.

Prepare to have your mind blown!

RAVE: Infinite diversity in infinite combinations!

Yes. Absolutely. It's a linguist thing.

If you speak a different language then you necessarily see the world slightly differently.

For the Himba their environment has meant it is important to them to distinguish subtler shades of green, rather than blue from white (or whatever).

While for the English, historically, it has been more important to distinguish different types of rain. (I joke, a bit.)

I saw that Horizon episode when it was on TV. It was really very interesting.

Yeah, I've seen The Matrix too.

I loved the third one, but everyone seems to hate it :(
