I can see how φ might change into ϕ, but it's still confusing.

I think it already had this form in the ancient era, but there you mostly see letters (eg in marble) in capital, so you would see the first type which can also be non-capital but in capital form it will always be like that :)

Though google uses φ, but whateβer

I actually perpetrated scholars mate on an unsuspecting victim once when I was in a sixth grade chess club. The overseer of the event couldn't believe I was calling for the confirmation of a win so soon after the matches commenced.
You were lucky.

My father, who taught me to play when I was five, began every game by trying to win with scholar's mate. Eventually I got bored playing against him. Which was a shame.

At first my father gave me his queen at move 1
Later when I got better a tower
than the bishop and as last a pawn

Your laundry, obviously.

Do any languages have distinct words for "scanning your eyes over written information to take in its content" and "decoding written characters to make the sound of words"?

In English, we tend to say reading for the first and the best we have for the second is the phrase, reading aloud.

But do any languages known to the denizens of this forum have two clean, distinct verbs for those two activities?

Thanks in advance.

In Dutch we have for reading aloud "vocaliseren"
and for reading silent but with either your lips moving a bit or only having the "sound" in your head "subvocaliseren"

Many people never get completely rid of "subvocaliseren" meaning that they read (much) slower than their brain can handle.

EDIT:
But no one is going to say: I "subvocaliseer" that book.

In Spanish you can say ‘leer en voz alta’ and/or you can specify to whom you're reading it.

In English we would say "read aloud"

In German you would say vorlesen, (conj. liest...vor) which is basically the same thing.

All the Indo-European languages work in essentially the same way, so all the dick-measuring people get up to regarding which IE language is more elegant, logical, sensible, whatever is rather silly, at least to me.

*EDIT* I just realized this wasn't the language dick-measuring "my dad can beat up your dad!" thread. So apologies for misdirecting my snark, my point still stands though.

I would go with 'scan' or 'skim', as in, 'I scanned the advert.'

I have a padawan. What should I have him do?
Are the younglings still alive?

I didn't know there was such a thread. But thanks for answering my question; I had hoped you would be one of the people who weighed in.

For the second, assuming you meant to imply that there was no comprehension, I would say "word calling." This is a term used by reading teachers in primary schools in the USA, and perhaps by others. I can word call in several languages that I don't understand at all, but I can only read in two.

Ok fam I come to you in my time of need. Over the last several weeks I've been on dates with 3 separate girls. Nothing has developed to the point where I feel uncomfortable continuing to see any of them (we haven't even kissed or called each other gf/bf/hon/bb whatever or anything). Here's the thing. These are ALL my first dates/expereinces with this kind of thing. I've never had a girlfriend or been intimate with anyone or anything. So I'm flying blind. But at some point there's a chance one could get serious and I would need to call the other two off. THAT BRINGS ME TO YOU. What follows are the pros and cons of each. I leave it up to you to decide who I should go with, mess up, and then regret everything.

Girl one:

Pros: hilarious
really hot and sensual and touchy
assertive and take charge and will tell me bluntly and honestly (she's super honest and upfront) what's on her mind or whatever
Cons: calls transgender folks trannies
once said "midgets" are gross and should be aborted
this all concerns me a bit that she has a mean/judgemental streak

Girl 2

Pros: seems really nice so far and super easy to talk to

Cons: i dunno we've only met once for like 90 minutes. In all honesty I don't know her much.
She wants to leave Kalamazoo within the next couple years so there's probably a cap on a relationship

Girl 3

Pros: Super compassionate
Has more in common with me than any of the other two and it's not even close (anxiety? check. similar music taste? check. we hit it off immediately and could commiserate about so much because we had the exact same struggles and thought processes)
Really similar life values and morals and stuff regarding honesty, accepting people from all walks of life, etc.
Our first date lasted almost 6 hours lol
The prettiest one

Cons

The whammy of all whammies. She has kids.

Please vote and/or tell me it's all pointless since we all die.

Please DO NOT suggest a threesome or foursome. If I wanted to disappoint that many people at the same time, I'd have dinner with my family.

Thank you much love.

It seems to me that you should get to know these women a bit better before making such a decision.

That said, the first one doesn't sound like a very nice person. I wouldn't want someone like that for an acquaintance, never mind a romantic partner.

The second one... it doesn't sound like you really have enough information to go on at this point.

The third one... how many kids, how old are they, and where is the father? Do you get any sense that she might be looking for a stepdad for the kids, or someone to help pay to raise them? Have you met the kids? Do they at least know about you?
