My dog is turning 10 tomorrow, and I want to get her something special. I keep trying to imagine what a big dog would want, and I end up visualizing a giant stack of meat. So I'm thinking of maybe getting her a steak or something like that. My concern is that she's accustomed to eating dog food... would feeding her "real" food be a bad idea? Would it be a shock to her system?

AFAIK a small steak is a perfectly acceptable b-day treat for a dog, even if it's not used to pure meat. My dog gets meat leftovers from time to time and there's no problems with that. Just make sure it's cooked and there's no bones (cooked bones are more brittle and may splinter and cause damage). She'll probably be very happy with that meal.

Yes it would be a shock to her system. A crumbled up strip of crisp fried bacon mixed in her regular food is a better treat and less likely to cause her digestive problems. Ten isn't young, and you don't want to put her through that.

This is pretty much accurate unless your dog is an organic hoover. A lab/retriever that eats anything not bolted to the floor would be fine even if the meat's not a part of their diet but for most dogs it's likely better to be safe than sorry. They'll like it in the moment but the intestinal distress afterwards would be unpleasant for all parties involved. :P

Do you have a dog park nearby? Dogs are rather intuitive and tend to know when to expect their trips to the park... a surprise visit might be nice. They won't consciously grasp it as you and I would but it wouldn't be something they expected and if they love the park they'll love the surprise. :)

My dog, as sweet as she is with people, actually doesn't play nice with other dogs... I believe it has to do with the fact she was a runt. I have to be careful not to take her places where dogs are off leash.

I'll try Tim's bacon suggestion, and maybe buy her some special dog snacks.

Snerk, thanks for the recommendation, but I think Tim's right... especially at her age, being unaccustomed to actual meat, it might not be a great idea to suddenly start now, even if she's initially enthusiastic at the prospect.

Does anybody know how to clean an eraser that's been stained by ink? I've been thinking that perhaps some sandpaper might do the trick, but I don't want to ruin it. It's a good one and there's a couple years' worth of use left in it.

Couple years? What kind of fancy pants eraser are you using? When I was in school none of my erasers lasted more than a month...

I don't use it nearly as often as I did in high-school.

I've had the same eraser for nearly twenty years.

To be honest with you, it's fairly useless.

Unless I want to make a dirty mark on a piece of paper. And then it's unbeatable.

Would you like to buy it off me?

Let's say £20, no, £30.

Plus VAT, postage and packaging.

I do only have the one though. So I should point out that I'm expecting demand for it to be high.

I'll give you a penny for it.

I'm Canadian so we round to the nearest nickel.

I'll give you nothing for it.

Rawhide bones...

@shadowplay: Dog treats are better than human food, if the dog isn't used to human food. That said, I remember one year when I decided to really celebrate one of my cats' birthdays. We had a takeout place in town that had THE best barbecue chicken. So I ordered one of their barbecue chicken dinners, and shared the chicken with the cat (2 bites for me, one for him, repeat until finished).

Tomtat could hardly believe his good luck. I had four cats at that time, and not only was he getting a lot of attention, but he was getting lots of yummy chicken, as well.

If you do give your dog any human food as a treat, do it slowly, to make sure it's going to stay down. That meal I shared with my cat took over 2 hours, but both of us enjoyed every moment. He was purring quite happily throughout.

Not sure what I'm going to do about my current cat's birthday. Maddy will be 10 on June 25. I don't give her human food, unless it's a little bite of fish once in awhile, or if she stuck her nose in the way when I was sharing some yogurt with Chloe (my cat who died in March).

@Takhisis: What kind of eraser are you talking about? Is it at the end of a pencil? An unattached one? I found that using a sharp knife to cut away the stained part sometimes works. Or what I've done with ink is use another eraser on the stained one (there are erasers that are designed to erase ink as well as pencil marks).

A big lump of rubber. I think the brand's Stædtler.

Can't you just rub it hard against a piece of scrap paper until the inkystained part wears off?

Have you tried duct tape? (serious question; you'd be amazed at what that stuff can lift sometimes)

I've got a few of those erasers around somewhere (I still do my D&D and Fighting Fantasy maps the old-fashioned way, with pens/pencils, graph paper, and erasers). I'm tempted to try a few experiments.
