Warehouse and stock work is, within certain constraints, a question of the volume of work that needs to be done; X amount of product needs to make its way from the back of a truck to the shelf, and that will take Y amount of people Z amount of time. Customer-facing roles are a more a question of availability, of having enough people available to dealing with customer's in a timely fashion, so the demand for labour is going to vary more dramatically throughout the day and week. Forty hours of work in the warehouse are easily organised as five eight-hour shifts, but that may be less use at front-end if the employee will spend ten of those hours kicking their heels and ten run ragged. It makes more sense to hire two people to work for twenty hours each, and having them working side-by-side on a Saturday afternoon, say, than having one person trying to do the work of two on a Saturday afternoon and counting the floor tiles on a Wednesday morning.

The fact that front-end work is dominated by people for whom part-time work is preferable is I think a function of this hiring preference. Plenty of women work full time in retail or other customer-facing roles, they're just less likely to do so in a grocery store.

It is the longest day of the year here. It is hard to fall asleep for night owls due to light appearing at nearly 3 am. I wish I had more scientific information why and how days getting shorter again affects us.

According to link below 84 genes have been discovered that regulate circadian and sleep cycles.
These genes do differ for people samples living at lower or higher latitudes.
low latitudes having little seasonal difference in lenght of daylight
So... if you live at a fairly high latitude, and so did your ancestors, then the impact should be less.

The liquor store and warehouse workers in Ontario are about to go on strike, and people are panicking like we're running out of water. As someone who doesn't drink and thinks of the stuff as poison, I hope they strike forever. :)

The End Is Nigh! The End Is Nigh!:run::run:

Why are they striking?

I believe their beef has to do with management hiring too many part-time workers and not enough full-time people.

Restaurants will probably be hit hardest by this, as they typically rely on alcohol sales to turn a profit. I think this is where the union is expecting the most pressure to end the strike to come from..

The government still controls liquor sales in your province, doesn't it? Ralph Klein privatized liquor sales here in Alberta a long time ago. So on the one hand, there aren't any strikes. On the flip side, fewer places accept my ALCB card as valid photo ID (I still look like that photo, even though it was taken 30 years ago).

Your cat is all that and a bag of chips! Give her/him a nice treat from me. And say that the cookie monster says hello.

today is something more rave-worthy. It's my cat's 10th birthday.

 Thank you!

That's basically what goes on in my china cabinet when I'm not looking, btw. Most of the items are cat-themed, some are penguin-themed, and there are a couple of dog-themed pet rocks, a bird-themed marble egg, and a ceramic TARDIS. I'm still trying to reorganize to make room for the ceramic d20 and dragon.

But...but...

Mrs Norris is a cat.

Spoiler :
Can't say I liked Harry Potter, either. I did see the films and read a couple of books. They're not worth it, unless you're a young adolescent.

Though it could be I'm missing something.

Children's literary, generally, is a bit of a let-down, imo. With one or two rare exceptions.

Is there an easy way to transcribe spoken youtube content to a written format that could then be printed?

Thanks.
