Random Thoughts 2: Arbitrary Speculations

But in any case, coercion by a "threat of violence" is also not (an act of) violence.
So if I put a knife to your throat and tell you to give me all your money or else it is not a violent situation. Got it.

or is this yet another example of your humour being dry like good wine but not good like dry wine?

I'm not so sure. Is phantom pain not also pain? Is simulated pain not also pain?
Phantom pain is pain because you experience it as pain. The only difference between phantom pain and "real" pain, is that phantom pain is generated by a misfiring of your body or brain, while "real" pain is created by a natural reaction of your body.

Is the threat of torture not also torture?
The threat of torture is torture because it is literally a form of torture. This is not true for anything else (at least nothing that I can think of).

The threat of rape is not rape.
The threat of leaving a relationship is not leaving a relationship.
The threat of killing the President of the United States is not the act of killing the President of the United States.
etc.

The real question here is whether or not violence is necessarily physical, and I think the obvious answer is that it is clearly not. "psychological violence" is sometimes used as a stand in for, say, abuse.

Does this mean that you are committing violence against a woman right now by trying to change my mind? It does, after all, cause emotional distress to change ones opinion. ;)

But no, I don't agree with that definition at all. "Psychological violence" is not a thing that exists, the thing that is described there already has a term, it's "Psychological abuse", and fits much closer with the definition of "Physical abuse". I don't think the term "Psychological violence" is widely used by the public, and instead I just see it being flung around by activists who really, really want "Psychological abuse" sound as bad as it can sound.

Of course at this point we'd now start arguing about definitions, which is just useless.

See, that's the difference between you and that forest wraith - when you are being rude, it's usually pretty funny!

As of about 30 minutes ago, Comcast has withdrawn its bid to purchase 21st Century Fox, leaving Disney to close on its $71b bid. I guess this could be both a rant and a rave.

This package deal does not include Fox News or Fox Sports, but it does include Fox Entertainment subsidiaries such as FX and Searchlight Pictures. On the nerd side of things, Fox Entertainment owns the Marvel Comics characters The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and Deadpool, as well as affiliated characters (Doctor Doom, The Silver Surfer & Galactus, Prince Namor), but that's just the tip of the iceberg. The original film studio, 20th Century Fox, was founded in 1935 and owns franchises like Avatar, The Planet of the Apes, Die Hard, Predator, Aliens and on and on and on.

As Mark Bernardin, an entertainment industry writer, tweeted when the Disney bid was first announced last year, "Omniglobomegacorp is go."

CNN, 19 July 2018 - "Disney wins: Comcast drops its bid for 21st Century Fox"
Well, it's more-or-less official. All hail our entertainment industry overlords?

Deadline, 27 July 2018 - "Disney and Fox shareholders give historic merger votes of approval"

Coercion doesn't have to be violent, blackmail was already brought up and is the perfect example.

karudogeimu-san, I must respectfully point out a lack of agreement with the full meaning of the statement which you have posted. You appear to be implying that physical violence is the only form of violence. It is not for nothing that the honourable Humon-san has postulated ‘I will sue you’ to be the battle cry of the United States of Amerika.

Somebody wish me happy b-day! Also if you do I will delete this post and show my cat this thread. She said nobody on the internet cares about me, that my presence on CFC was a pointless undertaking solidifying my hopeless endeavour to be seen by an audience I could somewhat swing by clouding my abundance of shortcomings.

*ahem*

Please tell your cat that she is mistaken.

When I started rebelling from my parents at the ripe old age of 12 and subsequently started listening to music, all I would do was get entire discographies and become acquainted with the skip button. I had well over 5000 songs.

Then at 18 this changed and I started from scratch. I would instead have one playlist of my 'favourite' songs!

At the age of 24, this playlist had gotten up to around 350 songs. But I also started using the skip button again.

So now, I'm creating mood-based and preference-based playlists. "The Auditions", for new songs that I'm unsure about. "The Good", for songs that are alright. "The Best", for my go-tos. And "Despair", for when I just want to be a sad boi.

It is taking a long time.

Do you have an 80's cheese playlist and a stupid cheese(Weird Al+Devo) playlist?

I have over 250 CDs at this point. This is another way of saying I'm not good at investing.

How do you make room for your VHS collection?
Some of us still have a bunch of LPs (some of mine belonged to my grandparents; they're 78s) and I have an 8-track of one of William Shatner's Star Trek convention appearances.

I have nothing to play it on (I no longer have my dad's 8-track player), but it's still a part of my Star Trek collection.

I've never downloaded any music.

Yeah but 8-tracks and LPs are cool and retro. CDs and VHS, less so. But perhaps one day.
