I had a not-so-fun dream about a Windows Update summoning demons from the bowels of my CPU. Now I'm eyeing the "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1909" with some suspicion.

Apparently update 1909 has a lot of problems. Hmm.

I just did the US 2020 Census and it had almost no questions beyond age, gender and race. The 2010 census asked about religion and income and a whole bunch of other stuff. Wonder why they cut all the questions?

Who became president between 2010 and 2020

Because Trump is too stupid to understand the answers.

Oh hey, when I was a census worker ten years ago I remember that the poverty questions were removed. The presidentess of the time is a Trump supporter.

You know, I'm glad I didn't accidentally misspell the thread title as "Wuhan corny virus" or something silly like that. I don't know if I could live it down twice.

Well, no, you might not have been able to stop something like that from spreading. :)

It would certainly have gone viral.

Our former (and not-remotely-missed) Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, decided that the long-form census cost too much money, was too intrusive, and wasn't necessary, besides which people didn't like filling it out. Every ten years, one in however-many households would get it along instead of the regular census.

So he canceled it, and as a result, ten years' worth of crucial data wasn't gathered and some very small towns and villages basically disappeared from the records. No data was gathered about them, so the government didn't provide them the services to the extent they were entitled to.

One of the first things Justin did when the Liberals won in 2015 was to restore the long-form census. I was one of the households tapped to fill it out, and it was easier this time around because we had the option to do it either by hand or online. I opted for online, and the only question I got hung up on was "how old is the dwelling in which you currently reside?". I had no idea, so I phoned the manager... who had no idea either. I told her I was doing the census, and had a maximum of 15 minutes to get it done before it would time out, so I needed at least a ball park guess. I think we got it wrong by about 10 years, but whatever.

One reason people give for not wanting to do the long form census is they think the government wants to know how many bathrooms they have (seriously). The actual question is "How many rooms does your dwelling have? Do not count the bathrooms, closets, or storage rooms." I guess they just assume everyone has at least one bathroom.

I like your other tag. :mischief:

That doesn't sound like an unintentional effect....

Apparently things changed in 2010:

You were probably asked to do the American Community Survey alongside the Census in 2010.

2010 Census said:
For the 2010 census, the long- and short-form questionnaires used from 1940 to 2000 were replaced by a single questionnaire asking 10 questions. The questions asked by the long-form questionnaire are now asked by the annual American Community Survey.

The 2010 census asked the following ten questions:

  1. How many people were living or staying in this house, apartment, or mobile home on April 1, 2010?
  2. Were there any additional people staying here April 1, 2010 that you did not include in Question 1?
  3. Is this house, apartment, or mobile home: owned with mortgage, owned without mortgage, rented, occupied without rent?
  4. What is your telephone number?
  5. Please provide information for each person living here. Start with a person here who owns or rents this house, apartment, or mobile home. If the owner or renter lives somewhere else, start with any adult living here. This will be Person 1. What is Person 1's name?
  6. What is Person 1's sex?
  7. What is Person 1's age and Date of Birth?
  8. Is Person 1 of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin?
  9. What is Person 1's race?
  10. Does Person 1 sometimes live or stay somewhere else?

We did, in your name.

Uh

It's OK, we just ordered hobbsyoyo's abode to be covered in rolls of toilet paper. Which he can then patiently roll back into, well, rolls, thereby gaining a pastime to keep him busy while the US goes into lockdown and also provides him with a good stock for himself (or for resale if need be). It's a win-win situation.
