Random Thoughts X: Impromptu Interpretations

I've been wondering if ridership on public transportation will go up around here, too. Lots of people have been bicycling since March-April, but with winter weather coming, people will be looking to other ways of getting around.

Yeah, I've noticed an increase in passengers the last few weeks. And I'd already before that started to take an earlier train just to beat the rush, but I'm not sure I can do much more now.

Where do you live, if you don't mind me asking?

Slavoj Žižek would not nearly be as popular as he is if his name were Bob Johnson or Mark Nelson.

I should change my name to capture attention.

Reginald D. Xylekaziz.
Kristof van Hooglezecks.
Petrov M. Nikzakiekzytzk.

That should get me on the college lecture circuit.

there are tons of popular ''marxist'' grifters with anglo names though

You're a day early. This is October 30. Halloween is on October 31.

This prompts a follow-up question, would Jordan Peterson be as popular if his name was "Ivan Pretovski"?

Is the preference for philosophy which carries an air of the exotic a generally Western preference, or a specifically left-wing one?

Maybe not. I feel Peterson certainly taps into a feeling of disillusionment felt by many young men in the West, so having a Slavic name or background might make it harder for his followers (for brevity’s sake I’m using the term, not implying some cultish devotion) to identify with his message.

I think the exoticism helps on the left, conformity more on the right. My anecdotal observation is that young people on the left also tend towards Eastern philosophy.

I don’t find much more enlightenment in it, myself, I think it’s just good branding.

It's not like Žižek is a serious philosopher.
By now, anyway, people would do well to stick to some (so-called) analytic philosophers. Or actually nevermind that, just stick to formal logicians if you aren't very into philosophy. Zizek is... another sign of the decadence of the times, and obviously not worse than what he is a reaction to, but still imo not good.

As for Peterson, he is neither a philosopher nor serious.

Exactly. It was 11:12 PM when I posted what I said. As in October 30. Aimee is 3 hours ahead of me (Canada is spread over 6 time zones).

I suppose I should get another globe so as to have more awareness of time zones, but I maintain that from my perspective, it was not yet October 31.

Time zones matter with a couple of websites I use. For Big Fish Games, their discount codes are valid until 11:59 PST. That means I have one extra hour to decide which games to get.

Ditto NaNoWriMo, at least with their old website. They also operate on Pacific time, and it used to be that the cutoff for updating was 11:59 Pacific. Now it's in whatever time zone you're in.

Anyway, my Halloween will include pizza and fanfic. Before midnight, it will be Harry Potter. After midnight, it will be what I'm writing. I've decided this time around that I am not going to torture myself by trying to cram all 1700 words into the last hour before midnight.

My whole life I've felt that social norms are stupid and not worth following, but over time I've gained an appreciation of the sort of cohesiveness such dynamics can bring to a society. On the other hand, it also usually leads to nonsense like people wearing silly hats killing other people who wear the wrong kind of silly hat. And a lot of time wasted at dinner parties.

Question everything, but don't be a moron about it

It really is about perspective, given how your post was made at 2:12 in my timezone.

I accidentally hit reply to this when I hadn’t written anything. I was trying to piece together some coherent thought but like the Carrot Top movie Chairman of the Board, no matter what I put into it it’s going to be crap. (Bio-Dome was my second choice for a reference here.)

Joe Biden’s full name, I believe, is Joseph R. Biden.

I don’t know what the “R” stands for though.

William Jefferson Clinton
George Walker Bush
Barack Hussein Obama
Donald John Trump

Joseph R____ Biden?

I could look it up on Wikipedia, but I’m not going to. I want to keep it a surprise for election day!
