We do have that historical reference point, and it's been in my mind through this discussion as the kind of thing you probably had in mind. But that didn't come about directly or simply because society didn't maintain enough scientists. There was a whole larger societal infrastructure that collapsed, and one part of that involved the loss of people who knew how to work with concrete. Could that happen? Of course. But keeping it from happening is probably not a function of having more people in our society who could themselves build a computer. If that big a cataclysm happens, there won't be materials available for anybody to build a computer, and it will involve a huge social, political and economic collapse, not just the wrong ratio of inventors and consumers of technology.

The Dark Ages saw remarkable improvements in labor amplification, and while society was no great treat, it's hard to argue it wasn't a big step up from the Roman Empire, which seems like it did not function without constant conquests to refuel its slave engines.

The Island of Avalon is somewhat mythical right now , after all we are all speaking English. Personally I would call it the beggining and the end of civilization. The fun fact is that they have invented clay bricks there and then ;) Henceforth a red-bricked homes everywhere ;)

My favorite ruler is Aethelred the Unready ... ^^ Because I can relate :) I am in no way prepared for a Viking Invasion !

Free Bird plays as the national anthem of the United States. That would feel beautiful, especially when it comes to the epic solo.

Oh wait, it's already asked for at EVERY SINGLE KARAOKE NIGHT

Is there a specific period you mean with "Dark Ages"? If we are talking anything from 500AD to 1000AD, there is a decent argument that could be made where there was a sustained reduction in the rights of freemen and freeholders in the face of aristocratic and royal authority.

Technically in was Unraed, as in Ill-Counseled. It was a condemnation of the kings counselors because direct criticism of kings was rare. It was also a pun on his name, Athelred, which meant Well-Counseled.
It was also only a nickname that appeared well after his death.

After years of being annoyed by him, I gotta give Mr. Beast the youtuber full credit for his cataracts video. There is so much preventable blindness in the world, every little bit of light helps in ways we can scarcely predict.
Actually, this appears to be a huge controversy.

MrBeast Built A YouTube Empire On Being Mr. Nice Guy, But His Stunt Helping 1,000 Blind People Divided Viewers, Who Called It "Demonic"
Is it stunt philanthropy or self-funded charity in the YouTube age?

Providing cataract surgery+ to 1000 people is pretty awesome. If it builds his brand and following, so what? I hope he keeps spending his money in such ways even it it makes him richer. He has improved the lives of 1000 people who had no prospects of help.

We live in a world where televangelists and the gospel of prosperity are real. Specifically criticizing a even a shock jock for giving 1000 people sight is just mean of spirit. End of line.

With regards to the dark ages, no, I'm referring to it as a mushy totality, like I am referring to the Roman Empire as a mushy totality.

The "demonic" aspect of this is not Mr. Beast paying for it, but that he is in a position where this is possible to do. Curable blindness and actively choosing not to cure it is a moral scourge. It's a stain on your society. It is as heartwarming as "Child, 7, pays for his sister's wheelchair with lemonade stand sales." You are propagandized to feel your heart strings pulled at capitalistic fetishizing of profit and personal philanthropy while the state is conveniently absent from the equation.

Alright. Then everyone making that point that hasn't joined the International Lions and fired up their dues can cram it!

Faith without works is dead. The secular kinds, too. -=Voting and the correct political stance=- is the lowest possible "effort" somebody can make.

At least you consider it mushy, since conditions were very different, depending on where and when you're talking about.

As for cataract surgery, it literally makes the difference between sight and blindness. I'd have gone blind 4 years ago if not for this surgery, and the eye specialist who performed it does annual checkups to make sure everything is still okay.

The title is ironic, in that the androids in the novel couldn't care less about the (consumerist dream) electric sheep :)
Thus, in irony, a robot is not interested in another type of robot( actually, not even their own type, in the novel), but really it's not into consumerism.

Oh. Thanks! I have been reading many important novels (for Quiz Bowl and the fact that I am a nerd), yet I still haven't read any Dick (although I read freaking Crime and Punishment last December.)

You raise an entirely different question. The fact that there are hungry children in the world is no reason [not to recognize or celebrate] to condemn those that feed some of them.

Mr. Beast is not being condemned.

Anyway, hopefully all the other people in the US with curable blindness get their very own millionaire to spontaneously pay for their surgeries.

That would be great. In the meantime, if you join the Lions you will definitely be able to help people to see, no millions required.

You in the general sense. Anyone, really.

You keep presenting this as a gotcha. If you think about it for more than ten seconds beyond the EPIC OWN! you would likely see how empty and meaningless this retort is.
